Wishes and Truths

Sachiko meets Kyubey, and learns the cold truth about Anshi.

It's evening; well past the hour when good little boys and girls ought to be asleep all nestled in their bed.

Of course, good little magical boys and girls don't have that option, because this is the hour when the monsters come out to play.

Sachiko Hayakawa would like to think of herself as a good little magical girl, but the reality of the situation somewhat disagrees with her interpretation of matters. She certainly isn't in bed, like she ought to be. Her foster parents have already reached wits end, and are trying to find her a new home. But meanwhile, a rope made of bedsheets dangles out of her second floor window.

An hour ago, Sachiko climbed down that bedsheet rope dressed in her monster-hunting attire: a pretty black and pink dress of the gothic lolita fashion, complete with more petticoats and ruffles than any girl has a right to, striped grey and black tights, and of course: Heelys.

Gliding through the night on her Heelys, Sachiko seems more interested in playing with a yo-yo than she is with watching for monsters. But then, a good Magical Girl doesn't have to watch for monsters. They can sense them. Right?

So when she wheels past an old convenience store with broken-out windows, is it any surprise that Sachiko raises her head to peer towards the building, then drops her toes to bring herself to a stop?

Narrowing her eyes, Sachiko hops up onto the convenience store's landing, then peers deeply inside. "Something's not right, here," says the little girl. "I sense the Clockwork Lord's magic."
Kyubey 2016-03-24 15:34:56 35620
What Sachiko finds is, depending on your point of view, better or maybe worse than a monster or the Clockwork Lord. At first it's just a shadow in the windowsill, with two beady red eyes looking at her. But then, the shadow jumps down and instead of a monster, it's a fuzzy white creature with long ears!

And it can talk without moving it's mouth. "Hello, Sachiko Hayakawa." it says in a cheerful voice. "It's good to see you again." Kyubey adds.

"You are out rather late today, are you not?"
Sachiko Hayakawa 2016-03-24 15:43:55 35621
Sachiko gasps in surprise at the sound of that voice. "Who said that!?" she asks, whirling around and spinning up her yo-yo into a defensive circle around herself.

The little lolita peers into the darkness confusedly, until her eyes settle on the little fuzzy white shadow. "Oh my gosh you're so cute," she says, zipping her yo-yo back into her hand. She rushes forward and picks the little creature up in her arms.

"Alright, monster, I don't know who you are or why you know my name!" she calls into the darkness. "But you won't get me and the cute little bunny! Don't come close or I'll have to beat you up!" Such a brave little cinnamon roll.
Kyubey 2016-03-24 15:51:42 35622
Kyubey tilts hirs head. It's not exactly rare for him to find humans wierd, but... still.

"There's no monsters here." Kyubey says calmly. That's debatable. "Just me!" he adds, and nuzzles into her. "I haven't seen you since everything happened to your older sister." Kyubey continues. "She really fought hard though. For you." he adds.

"Also, I'm not a bunny. My name is Kyubey. I help people like your sister become magical girls."
Sachiko Hayakawa 2016-03-24 15:55:21 35623
"Uwuh!?" Sachiko asks, stumbling backwards out of the shadow of that abandoned convenience store and onto the street. She grabs Kyubey with both hands under his forelegs, then holds him away so she can peer at the creature confusedly.

"D...did you just talk?" she asks Kyubey uncertainly.

"Wait! You know An-chi!?" Sachiko asks excitedly. "Greta says she's still out fighting monsters, and I gotta be really good so she won't worry until she can come back! If you made her a magical girl, do you know when I'll get to see her again?"
Kyubey 2016-03-24 16:10:59 35624
Kyubey perks up. "Of course I can talk! Well, I can talk to you telepathically, anyways." he 'says' as his face remains that unchanging half-smile. "I'm not a rabbit." he says for the second time.

"Of course I know Anshi. I'm the one she made a wish with. The one she made a contract with, so she could become a magical girl!" he adds.

"And you know... you could too. You could follow in your sister's footsteps. And fight alongside your friend, Greta." he adds. "The monster that killed your sister is already dead, of course, but that doesn't mean there aren't creatures like it still out there." Kyubey is, of course, thinking of Anshi's witch as the 'monster' that killed Anshi. Both true and very, very false.
Sachiko Hayakawa 2016-03-24 16:25:36 35625
"You look like a rabbit," Sachiko counters very reasonably at Kyubey. She holds him up higher to insepect his bottom half, then turns him around, one side then the other. "Hm. I guess rabbits have little puffball tails and yours is more like a fox's. And you have two sets of ears. You're a very odd looking creature," she notes to Kyubey. "But you're really cute. I bet my best friend Momo-chan would love you because you're so fluffy and white and pink. Pink is her favourite colour," she explains.

She almost misses Kyubey's words. Almost. "Well, I know that," she says. "I already am a magical girl. Fighting to help bring An-chi back. The Clockwork Lord has her, right now, but that's okay. I'll get her back, I just know I will."
Kyubey 2016-03-24 16:30:50 35626
"I have been told by many magical girls I am cute, yes." he says, unemotively. "I must be asthetically pleasing." he surmises.

"You're not already a magical girl, or I wouldn't have come looking for you." he says. But quickly, he changes tactics and tone. "I don't know of any Clockwork Lord, but... if there is such a thing, it would surely be better to fight him with the strength of a real magical girl, rather than a pretend one."

"I can give you that strength - and I can grant you a wish. It seems as if you already want to be a magical girl terribly, so it really wouldn't cost you anything at all. Just an agreement to keep doing what you're already trying to do. Only with much more power to protect others."
Sachiko Hayakawa 2016-03-24 17:16:54 35627
"Aest...hetical..ly pleasing?" Sachiko asks, furrowing her brows at the words. "What does that mean?" she asks curiously.

But of course then he goes and tries to claim she's not a magical girl. Luckily, Kyubey is quick to find a different approach, because he almost got thrown into a wall.

"But I've already got strength," Sachiko replies to him confusedly. "I have all sorts of magical attacks, and my magical henshin armor that protects me from harm. I do want An-chi to come home, but I know she's busy protecting lots of people so I'm trying to be brave for her."
Kyubey 2016-03-24 17:40:30 35629
Kyubey looks up at her, confused for a moment. Not sure how to respond to her, it takes him a while. "Well maybe you have a power I don't understand." he says after a while. Possible, perhaps, but unlikely. "But, upper still eligible for a contract with me. So you could become a STRONGER magical girl, and I could grant a wish for you!"

"Since you're already a magical girl, agreeing to fight witches and monsters should be an easy contract for you to make. If what you're saying is true, it should be a huge benefit for you and everyone else!"
Sachiko Hayakawa 2016-03-24 17:45:47 35630
Sachiko narrows her eyes at Kyubey, frowning severely. She considers Kyubey for a long time, then comes to the conclusion, "Well if you don't know about the Clockwork Lord, and you don't know I'm a magical girl, then I guess you're not very smart. How do I know I can trust you to grant my wish? And besides, if I'm already a magical girl why do I gotta make a contract to do what I'm already doing?"
Kyubey 2016-03-24 17:58:47 35632
If Kyubey had emotions, this might have caused a problem. But instead, the insult just doesn't find home. "I am very smart, I assure you. But maybe you can see things I cannot. It's possible. Just like most people can't see magical things."

"But I cannot make judgements on what I cannot see. Only on the things that I can. But your sister trusted me. All of her power came from her contract. And she was a strong magical girl indeed! So if Anshi trusted me... I was hoping you would, as well!"
Sachiko Hayakawa 2016-03-24 18:12:26 35635
Sachiko draws Kyubey closer, and starts to pet him again. "Well, if An-chi trusted you, I guess I can," she agrees as she hops down onto the sidewalk, and skips forward onto her Heelys again. She glides along at an even pace through the night, cuddling the little lop-eared cat-gbunny-thing. "But I don't see why I need to make a contract. I already fight against bad things and it's a lot of work. I don't know if I have time to do more of that."
Kyubey 2016-03-24 18:18:44 35637
"But really, it's just an agreement to do what you're already doing. It's not more." Kyubey comments, looking up at Sachiko, and curling up around her neck. He's very warm.

"I just need to know you're as dedicated as your sister was."
Sachiko Hayakawa 2016-03-24 18:21:06 35638
"I just want An-chi to come back," Sachiko says with a quiet whine. "I don't know what you mean by dedicated. All I want to do is to bring her back. Everything I'm doing is for that." She sighs Kyubey a squeeze, then whirls around on her Heelys in a circle, coming to a sudden stop.

Holding the little ratbunny out before her, the little lolita asks him, "Can you bring her back? I miss her so much. I'd do anything to bring her back."
Lacrima 2016-03-24 18:27:00 35640
Norie Okana is drawn to it like flies to a pie cooling on a windowsill. It's that youthful energy again. Sachiko. Norie was just out walking, along- not quite hunting-- lost in thought about the past day. About what the man said. About the thoughts her voice would talk to her about.

--but she's distracted now. She does her best to ignore it.

She can't. She turns up around the alley of the abandoned store as she peeks out---peeks back into the alley and her eyes shift into that purple-- hair growing, following suit.

She steps out, approaching---

Sachiko appears to be talking to ... some--one? Something? What's that creature? Still, words trace her lips..

"Sachi-chan~" Sachi-chan.
Kukai Souma 2016-03-24 18:32:23 35643
Sky Jack didn't exactly plan on being out on patrol today, but he'd already spent an hour trying to dent the concrete wall where his 'soccer goal' was painted using a soccer ball, and staying at home wasn't doing it for him anymore. So he'd gotten out of the house, Transformed with Daichi, stuck Eru in a pocket for safe keeping, and gone flying.

It also wasn't planned that he'd see that purple-haired energy draining girl again, watching someone in an old, abandoned store that he couldn't make out just yet, but that he had a sneaking, sinking suspicion about...
Kyubey 2016-03-24 19:33:41 35645
Kyubey keeps talking from around Sachiko's neck. "Well, if that's what your heart truly desires, you could make it your wish!" he says. "Anshi wanted to protect you, too. She fought for that. She fought for you. She wanted you to be happy. It's probably only fair for you to make your wish about her. You have a special karmic power." he comments.

"But even I can't say how things will go for sure. You'll never know unless you make the wish, though. So if that's what you want - you should make a contract with me, and become a magical girl the same way Anshi did!"
Sachiko Hayakawa 2016-03-24 19:36:56 35646
Sachiko puts her toes down the moment she sees a silhouette of another person. Her eyes widen just a bit. "Ulp," she murmurs, then peers at the little rat-bunny. "Do you think it'd work?" she asks him, then glances past towards ...

"... Norie-chan." She looks a little worried, this time, as if uncertain what the vampire has in store. T hen her eyes narrow. "You tried to hurt Greta-chan," she says, anger beginning to burn low in the child's eyes. "You're a bad person, Norie-chan! And as a Magical Girl, I gotta stop you." She holds up Kyubey, then, turning him around so Norie can see his face.

"Bunnyrat-san says he can make me an even stronger magical girl!" Sachiko tells Norie. "So you better be careful, or I'm gonna beat you up!"
Lacrima 2016-03-24 19:41:18 35647
Norie Okana manages to mostly keep composure. No wide eyeness yet. But she listens to Sachiko talk. She muses. "Greta-chan? Do you mean.. that girl that arrived the other night...?" she frowns. "I'm really sorry about that! I--I, well! It was really hard to ignore the oppurtunity when I'm like that." she says.

"I--should had left despite that boy telling me to stay there..."

"But I didn't~ Oh well~" she says.

She muses on the thing around Sachiko's neck. "Is that so?" she asks curiously.

She makes light steps forward still. "How?" she wonders at the creature.
Kukai Souma 2016-03-24 19:50:59 35649
It's like seeing a child with a loaded pistol, waving it around. Jack's eyes never leave the furry rat-cat-viper on Sachiko's neck. He moves in behind Norie, towards the three of them.

"...Sachiko." His voice is strained. "Put the cat down and come over here. Don't say anything else to it. We'll go find Greta. Ok?" He motions towards Sachiko, off to one side of Norie, motioning towards Sachiko and only giving Norie a cursory, worried glance at the moment. "It's not a truthful cat. It can't help you like you think it can."
Kyubey 2016-03-24 20:07:24 35650
Kyubey looks at Norie confusedly. "I can only help you if you make a wish. Otherwise, this really isn't any of my business, or anything I can really get involved in." he says, plainly. "I don't have any powers of my own, other than to make Magical Girls. Even the wishes a Puella Magi makes come from the power of their own destiny."

Kyubey turns slowly to look at Sky Jack. "I have never once lied to a Puella Magi or potential Puella Magi. You humans... just because sometimes you don't like something doesn't make it untrue. In fact, based on my own observations, that just makes it more likely."

"Sachiko, if you want to stand up to this girl, make a contract with me!"
Sachiko Hayakawa 2016-03-24 20:10:24 35651
"Sky Jack-sama!" Sachiko calls, smiling when she sees him. Except now he wants her to put the rat-cat-bunny-thing down? She glances at Kyubey confusedly, then back up at Kukai. "But it said it could bring An-chi back!" she say sto him uncertainly. "I want An-chi back! It th inks I should make a wish to bring her back, and it'll grant my wish, and it's so cute."

She glances towards Norie, then explains, "And it would give me even stronger powers to defend myself against her. Then no one would ever stand in Sachiko-chan's way!"
Lacrima 2016-03-24 20:13:42 35652
Norie Okana w-wishes!? Wishes! "Y-you grant wishes!?" her eyes go wide. For a moment--- for a fleeting moment she feels some form of hope inside... somewhere-- despite the darkness flooding her. It's momentary, but-- it's like feeling a high. For a few seconds she felt 'normal' almost with that flare of emotion.

She wonders how that even works, regardless...

She so desperatly wants to wish to be human again.

Could it do that? She says nothing for a few long moments.

"I--if I could wish.. to be human again! I could stop.. doing this! and--and go back to my friends!--and dance again.. and---!" she stops dead in her tracks. Yeah sbe has no idea how this works--

She stares at Sky Jack suddenly though.

"It--it lies!?" she suddenly says-- and then that fleeting emotionals turns into something upset.. and angry and dour...

"It lies!" she says through her teeth.
Kukai Souma 2016-03-24 20:23:28 35653
Sky Jack grits his teeth and then nods. He'd once heard you had to be logical to argue with Kyubey. Well, logic has never been his strong suit. He's got to stop this, now. "Ok, no. You never lie. But you never tell the whole truth. You never talk about what happens to the magical girls you create, how they always end up losing in the end, do you? It always ends badly for them."

Jack looks over at Norie for a moment, then moves over, speaking quietly. "It isn't lying, but I can't tell you the whole story. It's not mine to tell. But we have to stop Sachiko from making a contract with it or it will end up destroying her. And you, and maybe me, and Greta, and everyone who cares about Sachiko. Nothing you've done up to this point is a tenth as bad as that thing."

Jack moves in closer towards Sachiko. "Look, Sachiko. It wouldn't bring back Anshi. It'd bring back a monster with her voice, or some thing that looked like her but wasn't. I know you don't understand it right now. But please, please. Believe in me. Put the cat down and don't make any contracts. Please."
Kyubey 2016-03-24 20:31:50 35654
Kyubey would look offended, if it had facial expressions (and if it could feel offense). Instead, it just maintains its usual tone and responds. "I don't choose how the wishes turn out. And that seems highly unlikely, unless she worded the wish very carefully." it says. "The way I see it, the only person standing here who isn't lying to Sachiko is me." This includes, of course, Sachiko lying to herself.

"I'm not a cat, either. I'm Kyubey." he says adamantly. "And what happens to all humans? Eventually, the same end awaits you all. You are not immortal. But I have been told one thing humans value is the impact they can have on the lives of others around them before their time is up. And I will tell you truthfully - anyone who contracts with me will have a much greater impact on those around them than anyone who does not."

"It seems as though not making a contract with me has a chance to destroy Sachiko, too." Kyubey points out, inclining his head at Norie. Then he speaks to her. "I wish I could grant that wish, but your spirit has already been tied to another source of magical power. If you could rid yourself of it, then perhaps we could do business."

"This isn't the first time she's been after you, is it, Sachiko? I can help you stop her from hurting you or anyone else. I can make you a hero."
Sachiko Hayakawa 2016-03-24 20:53:49 35656
Sachiko looks very confused, as she looks between Kyubey, Jack, and Norie. "N-no," she admits quietly to Kyubey. "But I kinda told her it was okay to drain my energy because I'm a magical girl," she explains. "She was supposed to just drain me and no one else. But then I caught her draining other people anyways."

Sachiko frowns a little, then looks to Jack. "It said it can grant my wish," she tells him, voice small and sad. "I just want An-chi back. I miss her so much. Isn't it okay to make a wish if it will bring back An-chi?"

Nevertheless, her grip on Kyubey is slipping--which means Kyubey's grip (for now) is slipping on her.

"I don't want to be a hero," she whimpers. "I just want An-chi. I miss An-chi." Then she drops Kyubey to the ground (gently, of course; she's not a mean little girl) and reaches towards Sky Jack. Grabbing his shirt, she peers up at him with big, wide eyes, "Where is An-chi!? Why won't anyone take me to see her!? I don't have to fight monsters with her, if it's dangerous. I can just stay on the side and watch! But I need to see An-chi!"
Lacrima 2016-03-24 21:02:32 35657
Norie Okana twitches... if she could rid herself of this, she'd be human again and she wouldn't need to wish for anything! She doesn't really understand the extent of the changes to herself- else she might even be in more despair than she's currently falling into!

Sky Jack talks to her, she seethes. But maybe... he has a point.

Would Sachiko still 'taste' good as a real magical girl? Oh dear, does she really want to find out!?

Then she realizes what she's thinking and why and she scowls, but at herself.

She feels so wrong. More wrong than anything right now.

"/Fine./" she finally says.

"It can't fix me anyways so what good is it..." she says.

Then Sachiko talks she frowns. "Just because you eat an apple yesterday doesn't mean you starve yourself today." she says.

"I really did appreciate it. I really do." she says, though her tone isn't one of being pleased- more like she saying a boring fact. "I didn't need to hurt anyone else that night."

"But."

"I still needed to feed the next day."

"I'm really sorry if you misunderstood." she says.
Kukai Souma 2016-03-24 21:17:28 35658
Sky Jack shakes his head. "It's the worst kind of impact, though. And noone's going to destroy her, not Norie or anyone else. I can protect her, with my own power. With my own energy, if I have to. I've already sworn, nobody's going to hurt Sachiko."

He moves in closer to Sachiko, getting down on his knees near her. "I know. I miss her too. .... And I wish she was back too, and I'll never stop wishing for her, or Laisa, or any of the girls at Walpurgisnacht. But it's not worth you throwing away your future and your life with Kyubey. One day I promise, in the future, we'll tell you what happened with Anshi. But it's not somewhere we can go."

He wraps his arms around her, picking her up off the ground, and backs away from Kyubey and Norie, holding her close. "You're already a hero for being strong enough to let Kyubey go. You're a big, strong girl."
Lacrima 2016-03-24 21:28:32 35659
Norie Okana watches as Sky Jack goes to pickup Sachiko- and try to back away.

Wait, what he's doing!? She-- she was drawn here. By that, by her by that...

Energy...

"H--hey! I came here-- for that!" she snaps as she goes to reach her hand out, eyes widening just a little, towards Sky Jack and Sachiko.

Then she closes her eyes and shakes her head.. "Nrg---!" she says. A moment of a clarity--"Nono...I don't want to do this! I don't want to----!"

Then it seems like it takes a bit from her---but she begins to run. Just run away as fast as she can to get as much distance as she can.
Kyubey 2016-03-24 21:35:23 35660
Kyubey lands, and Norie leaves, and he just stretches out on the ground, very catlike - despite his previous protests. "Well, maybe you're not ready yet, Sachiko." he says calmly as the girl collapses into Sky Jack. "Don't worry, Sachiko. Sometimes it takes time for girls to be ready to make a contract. Maybe you just don't yet know what's really important enough to wish for." he says, still cheery.

"But I can see when, according to some people, I'm not wanted. So... if you ever want to make the jump, just call my name. Don't worry, I'll find you, Sachiko Hayakawa."

Kyubey gets up, walks away, past a thin street pole. Almost like a cartoon, he disappears as he walks behind it, despite it being far too thin to hide him...
Sachiko Hayakawa 2016-03-24 21:59:12 35661
"Wal.. pergy... not?" Clearly not a word Sachiko knows. She gives Kukai a worried look as he lifted her into his arms. "But why can't you just tell me now?" she whines. "Everyone keeps telling me something happened to An-chi except Greta-chan. Why won't anyone tell me what happened?"
Kukai Souma 2016-03-24 22:41:01 35662
Sky Jack sighs, holding Sachiko close and looking down, bringing his skateboard into existance and rolling away with her. "... Sachiko. The reason nobody wants to tell you is because we don't want to hurt you. There are a lot of things that happen to magical girls when they fight monsters that aren't 'win outright'. Greta doesn't know how to tell you what happened, and it's not my place to tell you, even though I know. Maybe if I can get her to agree one day we'll tell you what happened."

He rolls down the street away from Kyubey and Norie. "I'm very proud of you, though. It takes a very strong girl to resist Kyubey's promises. Thank you. I know Anshi would be proud of you too."
Sachiko Hayakawa 2016-03-25 02:58:30 35667
Even were Sky Jack not a magical boy, with plenty of strengt to spare, the tiny little lolita in his arms weighs net to nothing anyways. She huddles up tightly gagaint him, holding on for dear life as he takes her away from the abandoned convenience story.

"I don't understand," she tells him. "Why can't you just tell me where An-chi is. Why does Greta hav to tell me, and why is she lying to me? Why are you lying to me? Everyone lies to me! Just tell me where to find An-chi, I want An-chi!"
Kukai Souma 2016-03-25 03:03:16 35669
There is a small sigh, signalling that Jack can't take it anymore. He looks around, then stops and sits down with her on a bench, letting out a long sigh. "... If I tell you where Anshi is, you have to promise not to scream, or run off, or anything like that. And I want you to not tell Greta that I told you. I don't mind if you cry - I'll stay here with you until you stop - but it would break Greta's heart if she knew I told you the truth."

He looks down at her besides him on the bench, turned to one side to face her. "And you have to understand. I don't want to tell you, but I agree. People aren't telling you the truth."
Sachiko Hayakawa 2016-03-25 05:52:21 35681
As Jack sits down on the bench, Sachiko turns to face him. Carefully, the little girl puts her arms around his neck, eyes searching his face for some clue as to the information she so desperately seeks.

But then he makes her a simple offer, giving her the opportunity she desires in exchange for ... "Okay," she promises. "I won't scream! And I won't run away. I promise." Words are so easy when you're seven.

"Where is An-chi?" Only the slightest tremble. She knows something's wrong.
Kukai Souma 2016-03-25 06:00:16 35682
Sky Jack bows his head for a moment, putting his arms on both sides of Sachiko, hands on her sides. "I watched Anshi die at the Battle of Walpurgisnacht. There was a giant storm a few months ago, and inside the storm was a... monster, huge, and evil. Several dozens of us all went. Anshi died. Laisa died. Ano almost died - she bled all over me before I could get her to the doctor. Others died and I never got their names."

He strokes the sides of Sachiko's pretty dress as he talks. "I think she thought we couldn't win unless she gave it her everything, and if we hadn't won, we'd have all died, and more people in the city as well. She was an amazing hero, and I think of her as one of my guardian angels. Which is why I didn't want to hurt you - didn't want to tell you. But she's dead. I don't know if you understand what that is."
Sachiko Hayakawa 2016-03-25 06:05:30 35683
The response from Sky Jack is very far from the one Sachiko expected. That much is apparent when she continues to stare at him in utter confusion. "An-chi ... died in a storm?" she asks, furrowing her brows. No, that just doesn't make any sense. "An-chi is fighting monsters," she tells Kukai. "Greta-chan said so. What's a W--Walpurgy-not?" she asks.
Kukai Souma 2016-03-25 06:28:34 35684
Sky Jack shakes his head. "That's what I'm saying. Walpurgisnacht was the name of a giant monster that was hiding inside the big storm. -All- of the magical boys and girls, the good and the bad, all went and fought it, because if we had lost we would have all died."

He rubs his head. "I... I know you don't understand what I'm saying. Which is part of why we didn't want to tell you. It's hard even for me to understand. But please, Sachiko, I wouldn't lie to you about my guardian angel. She can't come back as much as she might want to."

Sachiko stares at Sky Jack, searching his face for understanding. It takes a long while for that understanding to begin, and when it does she grabs onto his collar like that might somehow save her from her grief.

"B-b-but," she protests. "An-chi said she'd be back," she says quietly. "She promised. An-chi always keeps her promises," she whimpers quietly.

Sachiko's little body jerks in Kukai's arms, as a sob wracks its way through her. "Sh...she said ... she said I had to be good. And ... and she said ..." A tear is forming. The first of many to be sure. "She said ... An-chi said ..." Then she leans into Jack and cries on his shoulder. It's not a scream, but it is certainly loud and heart-felt. "I want her back. I want An-chi back," she says through her broken sobs. "Bring her back. Tell the Kyubey to bring her back."

Sky Jack has very recently seen death in a very real form. It went away - it got better - but at the time it was still harsh, real grief. So he knows something of what she's feeling. He can only imagine how he'd feel if Kaido died.

So he does the only thing he can. He shifts, pulling Sachiko in close and holding her, stroking her hair, and letting her cry. "We always say we'll be back, but sometimes it doesn't happen. But you have to know. We always want to come back. It is always our hope and dream to come back, every time. Each and every time we go out to fight some monster or villain we might not come back in one piece, if at all. So nothing makes any of us happier than coming back. I know she would have if she could."

He nods, just letting her cry it out, warm and big-brotherly and strong. "You are being good. You are a very good girl. And I want her back. But neither my prayers nor Kyubey's contracts could bring her back. If it could I would have already. So... if you gotta cry, cry. I might cry with you." He looks down at her, smiling weakly, a few tears in his eyes too, for the lost.

Sachiko's tears continue undaunted for a long time. It's maybe as long as half an hour before her tiny body stops shaking. By then her face is an utter mess of tears and snot, and Kukai's shoulder has borne the worst of it.

But eventually the flow of tears do stop, and she simply lays curled up against him for several more minutes. Then she sniffles and reaches up to wipe at her eyes. Another few moments of silence, and then she says, "I guess I'll never see her again. I'll never be a good girl for her again." The intensity of the statement grows into almost a shout as she says, "I'll NEVER be a good girl again."

Then she pushes away from Kukai, forcibly squirming her way out of his arms as she tries to get away onto the sidewalk. "Leave me alone. I'm going home. I don't want to see you EVER AGAIN!"

Sky Jack holds her, letting her cry, even as the night's shadows get longer, and stays in place as long as she needs him, glad he doesn't have to wash his henshin outfit, only his shoulder. He thinks for a little while she'd cried herself to sleep, until she finally sits up and nearly shouts. He winces, but bears the brunt of it. He knows she needs to be angry at somebody.

He lets her down onto the sidewalk as she squirms, then looks at her, shaking his head. "Ok Sachi. OK. I'll be around from time to time if you do want to see me, or you can ask Greta. ... Do you know how to get home? I know someone usually takes you. I'll go with you if you want."

The little lolita never expected to just be let go. She thought she'd have to fight for it; maybe to even beat him up for it! But down she goes, and that defuses a lot of her anger. At least for a moment. Right up until he offers her a new approach to it. "I'm not stupid," she tells him angrily. "I know how to get home! Leave me alone," she says to him again then turns and runs away on her toes a few steps, before calling, "Petal Rush!" and jumping onto her heels. At relativistic speeds (or at least as closs as a little girl in Heelys can get to them), Sachiko speeds away.

Sky Jack smiles a little, sad, but... maybe she's gotten some of the pain out for now. Jack summons his skateboard and rises into the air, following above her as she makes her way home, walking with her whether or not she wants him to or not.

Sachiko does go home--at least mostly. It's a little apartment complex in a part of town that's still rebuilding from the storm. From above, he can see the warm glow of her nightlight through the window, and the bedsheet she's turned into a rope. But she doesn't climb back up--not right away. Instead, Sachiko hides just inside the wall of the complex and scoots down to sit in the grass on her bottom. There, she resumes crying, this time alone. But at least she's mostly home. Right?

Sky Jack sighs and alights on the roof of a nearby building, kneeling down so she (hopefully) can't see him. There are youma wrecking the town and chasing people, Utau is out hunting X-Eggs, his life's currently a level 2 disaster area, but for right now he can at least make sure she gets back up the bedsheet ladder and to bed... when she finishes crying.

Besides, he made a promise to take care of her, even when she doesn't want him around, so he's willing to wait.

Except Sachiko doesn't go for the ladder. Not right away, and not at all, of her own volition. Instead, she simply remains there in the grass, alone and exhausted, until sleep finally claims her.

Sky Jack hmphs. Part of him figured that was what was going to happen. He zips down, quiet as he can manage, and carefully scoops her up, trying not to wake her, and moves up towards her room, intent on depositing her in her bed.

The bedroom is small. Little more than a closet, really, but in Japan that's not too surprising. The bedsheets are mostly gone--used for her rope, no doubt. There's a dirty, dingy teddybear sitting nose-down on the floor with a little girl's nightgown discarded over his head. A few books that are too young for Sachiko's age group, and some dirty school clothes near a half-full hamper. Altogether, it's a spartan room; certainly not enough for a girl like Sachiko to be entertained by. But it does, at least, look relatively safe.

Sky Jack knows that Sachiko's foster family is probably fairly poor, but they're trying. He lays her gently on the bed, pulls off the Heelys as gently as he can, then pulls in the bedsheets, quickly untying each and laying two of the upper ones over her, picking up the teddy bear and setting it besides her. It's all he can do.

The bedsheets go into a pile near the hamper, and once he's sure she's asleep out the window he goes, all the while trying to be as quiet as possible.

This, however, means he's not as careful as possible. While going out the window his skateboard hooks on the edge, making a loud clacking. The noise startles Jack, whose head comes up - into the upper part of the open window, emitting a loud bang!

Jack tries to rapidly lean out of the window, not wanting to wake her up or have her or her parents see him, but in doing so doesn't notice the skateboard tipping until he's outside the window without it. The trip to the ground is thankfully not as painful as, say, getting thrown into a stone wall, but it makes a racket, and Jack can't help but cuss a little, especially when the skateboard finally follows him out of the window onto his back.

Somehow, he manages the delicate parts of the operation easily, but the easy parts with all the grace of a mongoose in a snowstorm. The bang wakes Sachiko--but it also alerts her foster parents.

There's a thumping and a running from down the hall. Sachiko sits up in bed, confused at how she got there, just in time for her foster father to come in the room and spot the open window,a nd the pile of bedsheets.

"Sachiko Hayakawa!!" he yells, angrily. "How dare you sneaking out again!"

"B-but," Sachiko's whimpering voice can be heard from within the bedroom, but she never gets the chance to defend herself.

"I can't believe you keep doing this!" comes the voice of her foster father. "I've had enough of it! You are grounded. No more dance, and no more Heelys, for a week!"

For the third time tonight, Sachiko's tears can be heard--a loud wailing cry that pierces the night.
