The Haunted Library

Sora's found a book that she thinks won't corrupt her, and needs a hand getting it. So the group that opposed her reconvenes to offer that hand. This is, as usual, much easier said than done.

Sora has sent out some notice that she'd like people to help her out, and to come here. Out of the way, a library made in a style that was popular in the 1930s and looks like it's been abandoned for over half a decade. The roof is half-collapsed and none of the windows are intact, but the walls stand firm and the building isn't likely to collapse much further.

Still has a 'private property, do not enter' sign on the front door, which was once locked off with a chain to keep it shut. The chain has been cut, and by the rust on the ends, this wasn't recently either.

Aside from being long abandoned, there doesn't initially appear to be anything else about it that makes it have a reputation for being haunted. Sora is standing nearby, leaning against a wall. She's brought along her school bag, and it looks full.
Lacrima 2017-04-30 22:20:39 75480
Lacrima arrives via a step out of the Dusk Zone. She hasn't brought anything with her. She doesn't really have things or need to carry things when she can just pull things out from magic. Sora of course doesn't have that benefit right now. So that's probably why she has the big filled bag.

She walks on over to Sora and nods. "Hello, Sora-chan." she says as she steps to the right and looks at the old, decript library.

"Ah. A library. Makes sense. When you're looking for a book." she says quietly.

"Do you know the history of this place besides just... it is?" she asks curiously.

Her eyes trace from up to down along the property. Shes scanning broken windows. Seeing if there's movement inside past the glass.
Ayana Tasogare 2017-04-30 22:32:48 75481
Ayana still isn't entirely sure this is a thing she should be doing. Yes, she's mostly forgiven Sora for her prior bullying, and yes she thinks Sora could be a good ally if she had powers again. But she's a vindictive little fox, and some part of her still wants to keep Sora out of all of this, for reasons that aren't entirely healthy or wholesome.

Nevertheless, the kitsune arrives dressed in a simple black sundress, with strappy sandals on her feet. She looks tired, rather than alert, but at least her ears are twitching this way and that with the unfamiliar sounds and noises.

That's why, when Norie pops out of the Dusk Zone only a few meters away, she notices immediately and turns to glower at the girl. Her ears flatten back against her head, and a low noise forms in her throat. Ayana threatens Norie not with words or explanations, but with growls and visible signs of displeasure. "What're you doing here?" she asks uncertainly.
Kazuo Takeba 2017-04-30 22:58:22 75484
Fox in sundress does not arrive on her own. There's a young man who made the trip with her, casually disregarding the way he towers over the girl in sundress. He nods to Sora by way of silent greeting. And when Ayana turns and growls, he turns as well, a hand lifted despite his not presently being in uniform --

And sees Lacrima, and lowers that hand again, inclining his head to her gravely.

"She helped before," Kazuo says to Ayana. "It's not unreasonable that she might choose do to so again."
Sora Hisakata 2017-04-30 23:06:48 75486
"She's here because she's my friend and I asked her to be here." Sora answers Ayana with a tone of 'please don't make an issue out of this.' Then she looks around the others and smiles, "Thanks for coming. So, uh, I know this place used to belong to a young curse hunter who died during the second world war. His brother got most of the cursed stuff out, but he missed one thing."

She opens up the door, and the wind around the area picks up, "I'm fairly sure, at least, that he missed it. This is the last known location of the Boreal Tome." She explains, and as she finishes the name, the wind picks up even more. "We're going to seal it, grab it, and go. Sounds like a plan, I hope?"
Lacrima 2017-04-30 23:12:59 75487
Lacrima eyes Sora. "That's some dangerous backstory when you're talking about war. I hope this isn't something connected." she says. Oh. Then there's Ayana. Who she turns to and keeps her usual curt frown at her. "What Sora-chan said. I'm here to help and she asked me to be." she says quietly. "Are you really still upset at me?" she asks with a softer frown.

She gently looks over to Kunzite and nods. "Hello, Kunzite." she says.

She turns towards Sora and follows her to the door as she gently frowns. "It's hardly ever as easy as that. I hope it is though." she says.
Hokuto Minase 2017-04-30 23:30:40 75489
Word of Sora's summons has also made it to the onmyouji of the Minase clan. Clearing a place of learning such as this of supernatural threats certainly appeals to them. After some discussion, the clan's heiress and prodigy - Hokuto - has set out to meet up with the group, arriving afoot just in time to miss Lacrima's arrival.

She arrives dressed for business, her familiar red and white miko's robe and hakama already donned, peachwood bokken tucked in her belt and matching bow slung over her shoulder. She walks up to the group as they open the door.

"I see I am a few minutes late. Please, pardon me. I will be glad to assist you in this endeavor."
Ayana Tasogare 2017-04-30 23:43:14 75490
Ayana's growl stops when Kazuo admonishers her, even so gently, but she doesn't stop glaring. Instead, the kitsune tightens up against his side and turns back to face Sora gain. 'This is fine', her expression says. But she doesn't use her words ot say it. There's probably a reason she and Sora never got along that's not entirely related to the book Sora had.
Kazuo Takeba 2017-04-30 23:47:11 75491
There's probably several. Kazuo rests a hand on Ayana's shoulder all the same, then inclines his head to Sora a second time. "That," he says, "or discover interesting things about why he didn't reclaim it then. Both worthwhile." Why no-one else has since might be answered by that increase in wind speed; he shifts his place enough to make certain that his hair isn't about to be used to take out anyone's eyes, and lifts a hand wordlessly to Hokuto in greeting.
Sora Hisakata 2017-04-30 23:57:58 75493
"If I thought it was gonna be easy I wouldn't have asked as many people as I could to help me." Sora points out, with a faint smile, "I've looked before actually, these winds keep people out, I'm sure that's why it's thought of as a haunted house." Then she opens the door further and the winds pick up even more, it's also pretty clear even beyond mere logic that there's magic in these winds. "The Boreal Tome is supposed to have embedded within the power of the Northern Wind." She entirely ignores Ayana's glares. "Let's go in."

The inside is dishevelled, with books and furniture strewn about seemingly at random. Immediately as she goes in, Sora is hit in the face by a stray book, well. Well, not quite stray, soon after it hits the ground and then follows up to fly towards of the face of the next person to enter. Its title? 'Isolation: The Merits of the Sakoku Policy'
Lacrima 2017-05-01 00:06:17 75494
Lacrima hears a thud as she walks in next and then she looks at Sora with a blink and then down at the book that lands on the floor... then it's flying at her and she frowns and raises her hand to try to catch it. Wether or not she does, she does catch the title.

"Ah. I see." she says. "Are you sure this isn't an actual ghost now?" she asks as she winces a bit at the book. She does get a glance in the main room they walk into. Dishelved. Mess. More wind.

"Well there is more wind. But I'm not sure if it's helpful yet." she says.
Hokuto Minase 2017-05-01 00:24:37 75498
Hokuto nods pleasantly to Kazuo, offering the gentleman a small smile, then flicks an ofuda up between her index and middle fingers as she turns to the door. "You did mention wind, I believe?" she murmurs, as the inked characters start to take on a dull blue glow.

*Ker-WHAP* Oh dear. "Well, that's very rude of you," she says, "Are we being haunted by the last of the Shimazu, now?" A shake of her head and she presses on inward, raising the warding paper to intervene if any more books should come flying at her.
Ayana Tasogare 2017-05-01 00:44:14 75500
When Sora opens the door and the wind starts up, Ayana takes a step back. "Wind?" she asks, confusedly, then looks to Kunzite. "Hnn. Spirits are annoying," she observes, before holding down the skirt of her dress and stepping in past the wind bravely.

"Hey, stupid spirit!" Ayana calls out loudly into the house. "Stop being so blustery and windy! It's annoy--ackpth!" When a scrap of something booklike smacks her in the face, Ayana reaches up to bat her hands at it, then growls in irritation. Her eyes go milky as she whispers, "Twilight Possession!" Some of the nearby books go still very suddenly, hovering despite the wind that continues to blow around them. Ayana also goes still, apparently unable to keep track of her surroundings while she's busy possessing the books.
Kazuo Takeba 2017-05-01 00:58:13 75503
Ayana stepping away from Kunzite's side means that Kazuo, just inside the door, has the freedom to become Kunzite -- which means that his stepping up behind Ayana, keeping an eye on her while she's not actually seeing the things around her, might actually be a more effective protection. "That's hardly a polite way to treat books," he notes aloud. Apparently to the air. Well, wind is air, anyway. "If they've survived this long under these conditions, they deserve better than to have their spines broken further."

He may or may not also be composing an impromptu lecture on why the proper lesson to take away from that particular policy is Not To Imitate The Tokugawa, granted. But he wasn't able to get that many non-powered teenagers to listen, let alone, well, magical wind books.
Sora Hisakata 2017-05-01 01:08:09 75504
"It's not a spirit, it's book that's gone haywire, it was made to cancel out its older brother, but it did something to it." Sora explains when Ayana calls it a spirit, coincidentally also answering Lacrima. Onwards, and soon enough the book itself becomes visible. Black with white pages, unmarked, but from in between the pages a shadowy muck drips. The muck ought to be familiar to those who have seen Shiniko fight.

She was fond of using that kind of muck to serve as oil for her dark flames. It seems the book doesn't control it though, but next comes a massive burst of wind, sending books flying backwards everywhere, and the wind itself is strong enough to throw back those who aren't ready, like Sora who ends up flung into the wall. A chandelier comes loose from the ceiling, and heads traght for Ayana and Kunzite.
Lacrima 2017-05-01 01:13:39 75505
Lacrima is 'transformed' as it were and when the wind blows, she raises her hand and darkness sweeps out from her hands and off in front of her like a wall or shield, buffeting a bit. The wall seeps in it's own ichor a moment, before she frowns and looks out from behind it.

"I thought you said that this book wasn't like the other Sora-chan. You know what I said I'd do if it turned out to be the case. Is it the case?" she asks sternly. She's willing to hear an explanation first, as she forms that wall of ichor into a rather long, sharp, pointed spear like protrusion and sends it hurtling into the direction of the book as she throws her hand out in the process.

"If you're like the other. You're intelligent. Aren't you?" she calls out to the book. "What do you want?" she asks.

"A new host? Again?" she spits.

Yeah Lacrima is probably getting the wrong idea.
Hokuto Minase 2017-05-01 01:17:50 75506
Hokuto keeps her hand held up, the softly-gleaming ofuda seeming to cut through the wind as it lashes at her, trying to push her back and ending up just flowing around her. She shakes her head, and focuses her attention on the book as it floats there.

"Well, hello, Tommy-boy. You've been a naughty little book, haven't you?" She waggles the paper slip at it, chidingly.

Then she lifts her free hand, holding it in front of her face, palm vertical as she starts to make a series of one-handed mudras, fingers twisting as she focuses her power onto the paper slip.
Kazuo Takeba 2017-05-01 01:31:39 75507
Ayana's not at home at the moment. But Lacrima's wall takes the brunt of that burst of wind; that leaves Kunzite free to brace the fox's semi-empty body, and to sweep his hands up on either side of her, calling a dome of blackness over the pair of them. The chandelier crashes into that, glass splintering and metal bending -- there's an audible grunt of effort from him, and a quiet hiss of breath as glass splinters slide and claw their way down the side of the shadows. Absorbing kinetic energy is hard; keeping that many fragments on the outside isn't easy, either. Two breaths after, and he manages aloud, "Not a book that time. Fair enough." Not one thrown at him, either. "Look at the thing. Not its fault it's doing this. It can't react straight."
Ayana Tasogare 2017-05-01 01:36:04 75509
The sound of breaking glass hardly even registers to Ayana. If she noticed the incoming chandelier, it isn't at all obvious. Her attention is focused, instead, on the books she's controlling, all of which neatly begin to lower to the ground and stack, one atop the other, behind a piece of broken furniture. This holds them out of the way, for now, but it's likely a good gust inthe right direction at the wrong time will send them flying again.

With it done, the little kitsune instead focuses on ... hey where'd all this glass come from? "Hnnn?" she asks confusedly, aloud, and then the shards of glass start flying as Ayana turns her attention to animating them, instead. These turn over, one way then another, before Ayana begins swepping them towards the broken windows and open doorway, sweeping them out of the house, and out of the danger area.
Sora Hisakata 2017-05-01 01:43:41 75510
Lacrima's spear hits home, Sora too slow to try to grab onto Lacrima's arm and stop her. "It's not. It's hurting, it's lashing out because it's hurting. We need to seal it so I can figure out how to make it stop hurting." She insists, glancing towards the shadowy ichor. "This book's got no power over shadow or darkness, just over wind. That goop is the Umbral Tome's work, I'm sure of it."

The spear is the same kind of irritant as the goop, though different enough it makes the book realize it's something new. It also made it mad, it hates the touch of darkness, it despises it. It was, after all, made to fight it, and thus if the winds before were forceful and mad? The winds pick up with fury, the tiles of the half-collapsed roof twisting and turning as the book becomes the eye of a tornado. These things end up getting flown just about everywhere

Sora hides behind Kunzite for cover as she digs through her bag, looking for something or other.
Ikiko Hisakata 2017-05-01 01:54:12 75511
Cute Wolf Tsukiko bounds across the rooftops, hurrying towards the library. She would have been here earlier, but some of the strays in her neighborhood had asked her for help with something. Expecting something small, Ikiko hadn't called ahead -- but it turned out to be a youma! A small one, and not much of a threat, but she had to chase it down, which took longer than expected.

"I hope things are going okay," the wolfgirl murmurs with a hint of a worried frown as she closes in on the library. The frown turns into a wince as a cloud of sparkly shards erupt from the windows, followed by a scream of wind.

Landing on the library grounds, Tsukiko dives in through a window and rolls, trying to keep a low profile as she sizes up the situation. "Sorry I'm late; had to deal with a small issue that came up," she calls over the fury of the windstorm.
Lacrima 2017-05-01 02:15:55 75516
Lacrima frowns as she looks to Sora and gives her a look like she doesn't quite believe it, but she's willing to give it a shot. Besides. They can just end it here and now if it is like before. Right? Right...?

A window cracks. "Ikiko-chan." she says.

"Something is happening." she says.

"That book is haywire. Sora wants to cleanse it." she says.

Lacrima sighs as she raises a hand skyward and then brings it down. "Jaula!" she calls out, Spanish for 'Cage', which causes a sparkle of dark magic to erupt around the book, to try to cage it and contain the winds which seem to pick up and become a Torando. This may not work too well considering. At least she can buy people more time to do proper containment and sealing measures- that she can't accomplish.
Hokuto Minase 2017-05-01 02:17:18 75517
Hokuto's muttered sanskrit chant becomes almost audible, though it's swiftly drowned out by the wind. She continues her one-handed seals, still holding up the ofuda with the other... and then tosses it out into the tornado that circles the book, a dozen more pulled along in its wake as they fly from the pouch at her belt.

With her hands free, she returns to forming mudras with both hands, now, as the prayer-slips glow and spread into the circling winds. "If it's a seal you want, I'm working on it!" she calls out as she reaches a break in her chanting.

With a little luck, she can adapt it to work with whatever Lacrima is doing, so that they'll complement each other rather than just break...
Kazuo Takeba 2017-05-01 02:31:05 75518
Roof tiles. Kunzite knew he didn't like that roof the moment he saw the building. He spreads his arms further, fingertips almost touching the inside of the dome, hardening it to accept the hits, to let tiles and other flying debris slide and clatter down the edges of the shield --

Sora is not flying debris. He exerts the additional effort to let her take shelter inside. But it means that he doesn't have the attention to spare to greet Tsukiko. That's fine. Lacrima has the situation report in hand; Tsukiko adds another purifier to Hokuto's abilities, and whatever Sora might have come up with to plan to handle the book -- and if Lacrima's effect works, maybe they'll be able to get the others in place to do that.

Or maybe things will explode harder. It's always interesting to find out.
Ayana Tasogare 2017-05-01 02:49:35 75521
With the immediately dangerous debris out of the house or out of the way, Ayana blinks back into her body, then looks around confusedly. "Saito-senpai?" she asks, surprised to find him so close, and clearly concentrating. "Ah, thank you," she says, then smiles at Ikiko. A wave of her hand for the cute wolf, then she asks, "Hey, can you absorb the goop? I can probably protect Sora-chan if you can do that."
Sora Hisakata 2017-05-01 03:07:53 75523
"I don't think we have what it takes to cleanse it here. We'll need to seal it and cleanse it later." Sora clarifies for the sake of the others, finishing pulling out a long silver chain with the sign for seal forged into every intricately made link. "Thanks for coming." She adds, and then she takes a moment to look around, the book is still doing the same thing as before, though the effect of that is much diminished by Lacrima and Hokuto's efforts.

"Tsukiko, thanks for coming." Sora adds, and she throws the chain towards her cousin. "You're fast, while they keep this thing under control, can you try to wrap this chain around the book? Put in a solid knot to keep it closed? That'll stop it."

The winds pick back up, the somewhat incompatible sealing methods creating a less than perfect seal, and the roof is starting to collapse. "... I think."
Ikiko Hisakata 2017-05-01 03:21:40 75525
Cute Wolf Tsukiko catches the chain, anchoring one end under a hefty piece of furniture and holding on to the other end. "Give me a few moments," she calls to the others, then dashes towards the book--

--and skims right past it.

Cornering hard, the wolfgirl dashes past the book again and again, skimming by each time and tightening the sealing chain each time. From an overhead view, it looks almost like she's trying to trace a star with many more than five points.

Once she has enough loops around the book, Tsukiko darts back over to the anchored end of the chain, grabbing it and then pulling her way close to the book. "Just need to get this tied off!" she shouts over the din.
Lacrima 2017-05-01 03:22:22 75526
Lacrima frowns as she draws her hand outward and it begins to shift, and change, her arm up to the elbow becomes something black and smokey and dripping and clawlike as she grrrrrs a little--- she's forcing more power through it, trying to keep that cage up, trying to buffet back the winds. She won't let herself get overtaken!

She does hear the commands and suggestions being given. When Tsukiko makes for the cage book, she does slice the cage open on her approach vector, though she does the keep rest of it in place, doing so with a motion of her other hand- which is currently not monstorus.
Hokuto Minase 2017-05-01 03:26:14 75527
Hokuto keeps a close eye on the book, and the winds surrounding it - no, not the winds, the energy pattern of the winds. Tracing them with her eyes, watching as they ripple and flutter the prayer-slips she's tossed into their orbit. "We can do this," she insists, her tone firm and insistent. "I will not be beaten by a book."

A few moments pass, as she dodges a flying pencil-bin, and then the chair that follows it, allowing only brief interruptions to her focus.

She draws out another set of prayer-slips, charging them with a quickly-muttered chant, and hurls them in to form a pentagram around the book and its tornado. "Ready when you are!"
Kazuo Takeba 2017-05-01 03:33:43 75528
... the roof is starting to collapse. Wonderful. "I don't eat dark energy anymore," Kunzite answers Ayana. Not if he can help it, anyhow. Which is a pity, because it would make what he's about to do trivial; he managed to hold a shield up against Walpurgisnacht throwing a building at it once -- but that was then. And Tsukiko needs a few moments. "Protect her anyhow, if you can? The wind's about to pick up. And get both of you out once they have the book --"

Because he turns his hands as if pushing outward, and the dome thins and expands -- over the library, over the wreckage of shelves, over the other girls, over the book. It doesn't block the winds anymore.

It does, however, lend support to the roof, and keep falling pieces from falling on the girls' heads.

That's not going to last for long.
Ayana Tasogare 2017-05-01 03:46:57 75529
Ayana frowns just a little at that information. He doesn't consume dark energy? That comes as a surprise. But she does as she's told anyways. Grasping the star ball dangling from a collar around her throat, Ayana steps into the void, and re-emerges as Cute Fox Inariko only a moment later.

In henshin, Inariko reaches out for a cushion from the couch. It's old, dingy, and falling apart, but it's just one item, and she doesn't have to concentrate as hard, now. The cushion flies off into the sky and soars over Sora's head, where Inariko begins carefully deflecting projectiles not with energy and power, but with simple cushioned absorption.

"Sora-chan," she calls over the wind, "I'm going to grab you and Step us out of here when you're ready. Just tell me when."
Sora Hisakata 2017-05-01 03:52:18 75531
Without Kazuo the roof would have collapsed on them all, without Ayana it's likely Sora would've gotten hurt, some tiles still falling even thought he roof remains intact. Easy to dodge or tolerate for those with power, not so much for Sora.

Without Lacrima and Hokuta, the winds would've grown far too strong to get anything done, the library would've been wiped away by the force long before Tsukiko could get close enough to wrap that chain around.

But the chain gets wrapped around the book, its gets pulled tight, and the winds stop. It's still filthy with corruption, it's still chaving against its restraints, but it's sealed.

And the roof is still going to collapse as soon as Kazuo stops keeping it up. "Now would be good." Sora answers Ayana.
Lacrima 2017-05-01 04:01:29 75532
Lacrima frowns and looks upwards. "You guys should run. This place falling won't kill me." she says. "Or trap me under it." she says silently as she lets the cage go when the winds stop and her hand reforms back to normal. Well. What's 'normal' to her.

"Not that I won't try, but you first." she says. She isn't going to just Dusk Step out. She'll follow the others in case one of them DOES need help exiting in a hurry.
Ikiko Hisakata 2017-05-01 04:04:08 75534
Bound book? Check.

Soon-to-be-collapsing roof? Check.

Getting clear of the building? progress.

With chained book in hand (at arm's length), Tsukiko scampers through the window she entered from, making sure to put several meters between her and the walls. "Ready when the rest of you are!" she calls, keeping an eye out for any unexpected trouble.
Hokuto Minase 2017-05-01 04:14:13 75539
The five prayer-strips floating in their pentagon around the book glow brighter as the wolf-girl dashes out with her chain. Hoktuo continues forming a new set of mudras, fingers twisting and constantly moving as she channels power into them. "No worries," she calls. "It's just a building falling on our heads." She'd laugh, but she's a bit busy.

The moment the chain is wrapped in place and the winds have mostly ceased, the prayer-slips in the whirling wind drift and settle to the ground, their own glow dying out. The pentagon strips, however, start to move, circling around the book and spiraling inward, glomming themselves onto it to add their mystic force to the chain holding it shut. (Somehow, they avoid binding Tsukiko's arm to the book, as well...)

"Okay, that's got it, coming through!" And she turns to follow the running wolf-girl out through the window, leaping from the sill to land running.
Ayana Tasogare 2017-05-01 04:16:57 75540
As soon as Sora says 'now', Inariko dashes forward. Her concentration on the power holding the cushion in place falters, and it begins to fall down towards Sora, but Inairko wraps her arms around the girl. "Twilight Step," she declares, taking herself and Sora both just out the door. It's a hop of barely more than five meters, but it happens in an instant. Once out, Inariko arrests their motion carefully, then sets Sora back on her feet and pats the girl on the head. "There! Safe and sound!" she says, oblivious to the impending collapse of the house behind her.
Kazuo Takeba 2017-05-01 04:24:40 75541
Fox and non-shadow-witch -- check. Wolf and miko -- also check. "Coming down," Kunzite calls to Lacrima, and he tips his head back, checks angles --

The dome flickers, with an ominous creak of the roof; then vanishes in the same moment that he leaps for an extant gap. And the collapse reasserts itself, creak and clatter and dust and roar.
Sora Hisakata 2017-05-01 04:27:07 75542
And thus out, the library collapses behind them, but everyone is fine. They have what they came for. "Phew, that was rough." Sora sounds a bit rattled from it all, and she looks up. "Let's go home. I'll need to do a bit more research to figure out how to cleanse this thing. Would you mind holding onto it for me for now?" She's looking towards her cousin when she says that. "And thank you, all of you, for helping me out."
Lacrima 2017-05-01 04:37:42 75544
When everyone is gone, Lacrima makes her Dusk Zone step. It's just an instant. No words. Just a cloak of dusk around her. She reappears a little ways off from Sora and the others and then takes a few more steps towards them.

"It's fine, Sora-chan. Please make sure it doesn't get loose until it's 'fixed'." she says softly.

She gently looks between Ayana and Ikiko. She frowns a little at Ayana. She has things to say, but now isn't the time.

She looks back to Kunzite. "Kunzite. Will Mamoru possibly be available later?" she asks softly. "I need to.. thank him. For. His role. In. Fixing Alexis-kun." she says softly. "And that's something better done in person. Rather than asking you to pass on my thank you." she says gently.
Ikiko Hisakata 2017-05-01 04:43:32 75545
"I'll keep it contained," Tsukiko nods to her cousin. "A bit of silk, the usual warding herbs... that should at least keep it quiet while you figure out what needs to be done." And the natural resistances of a magical girl, to make it easier to handle in the meantime.

As if it were a perfectly ordinary question, perhaps over coffee or something, instead of over brick dust.
