So I Got a Letter From Your Dad

Mamoru gets a letter from Kunzite's dad asking if it wouldn't be too much of an imposition to come over literally the next day. OF COURSE NOT!! :D :D :D

It's May the Fourth, Star Wars Day. Mamoru hasn't got classes, but he's definitely been nerding around the house all morning, with a marathon of all extant movies going on in the background. They're subtitled, not dubbed, and they're not on loud, so can be cheerfully ignored if so desired. Also, the first three are already over and thankfully, it's A New Hope that's currently on the screen. Help me, Obi-wan Kenobi, you're my only hope.

Mamoru comes in on that line, holding the mail, and gives the big screen a thoughtful look. Maybe this Halloween he and Usa can dress as Han and Leia. After all, buns. And Mamoru likes vests. A lot. But he looks back at the mail in his hands again, flipping through letters, and his hand stills on one, eyes going very, very wide.

He opens it in a hurry, dropping the rest of the mail on the open kitchen counter window, and scans through it.

All of a sudden, the prince looks this entertaining combination of ecstatic and horribly anxious. "Kazuo!" he calls, "KAZUO."

It's not necessary to be so loud. It is notable that Mamoru's not saying Kunzite, as he usually does.

He shoves the letter through the kitchen window and waves it around.

It is not, to make this clear, that the refrigerator has any immense lurking masses of potentially-sentient mold.

It is just that there is a 'yet' attached to that, because the first few weeks of university classes have been something of a distraction. And one of the basic unspoken rules of the house is 'do not allow a yet to get attached to that sentence, because Makoto should never feel dismayed about the kitchen, for all our sakes, and also because the medical student in charge would kill us all.'

Fortunately, time and residents and Sakuras who are informal residents -- not to mention the visiting fox -- have taken care of most of the 'HOW many pizzas?' problem already, which more or less means it's just a process of emptying the thing, doing a little cleaning, and then going grocery shopping.

... which is why Kazuo has just removed the eighth lingering orange soda from the fridge. Only three more to go. "No," he says aside to Naru. "I still haven't figured out who bought these." The pineapple really did do better.

And then there's a Mamoru shouting for him, which means that the fridge is abandoned and he turns instantly to give his attention that direction. Two steps take him across the kitchen to catch the letter. Which he frowns at for a moment, and then glances back at Mamoru over. It doesn't look like it's from the police.
Naru Osaka 2017-05-05 18:26:06 75847
"It's a threat." Naru comments as she accepts yet another orange soda from the fridge to set on the counter amongst the other 'keep' things from the fridge. "Because it's an eternal abomonation. Either that or they're breeding in there."

There's a tupperware container of muffins also on the counter, the incentive to actually find clean space in the fridge waiting close to hand. And there's coffee. Because of course there is coffee.

Naru looks up at Mamoru's shouting, stepping in to where Kunzite was to continue the extraction of orange soda from the back. She's watching, she's clearly listening, just one can do those things and continue cleaning a fridge.

"It's from your dad, he's coming over tomorrow," Mamoru says, eyes still wide behind his glasses; he puts his hands on the counter and leans over it in emphasis. "He's actually coming. I--"

There's a pause, and he inches back a little bit, straightening up but keeping his fingertips on the counter. He squares his shoulders and takes a breath. "I went to talk to him in January. I didn't know what effect it might eventually have. It went oddly because I-- I got a little desperate after misstepping, and I kind of... showed him. And he fainted. So I left him on the couch with a letter and his tea on the coffee table, and a blanket on him, I didn't want to... to intimidate him even more. Or keep filling his space. And I didn't know if he'd just... never acknowledge it. I gave him that option, in the letter. But invited him to come if he wanted to."
Kunzite 2017-05-05 18:41:24 75851
There is quiet, from Kazuo. He stares at Mamoru for a second or two, unblinking; glances down at the letter in his hand; up at Mamoru again.

Then over to Naru, because aparently he can't actually talk while looking at Mamoru standing like that. "It can't be Riventon," he says conversationally, "because Riventon wouldn't bother with a cover story, and I'm relatively certain his cloning methods require active magic on the subject's part to work. But I'm having trouble coming up with anyone else who has both the knowledge and a motive to fake something like this."

The next look to Mamoru is almost an uncertain one. Almost.
Naru Osaka 2017-05-05 18:44:18 75853
"I totally need to make pamphlets." Naru mutters oh so quietly to the fridge at the mention of 'fainting' and 'left a letter'. She sets another can of orange soda on the counter with its shiny companions.

A glance from Kazuo to Mamoru and then back again as she watches people. The quirk of her brow isn't really giving the Riventon theory a whole lot of weight.
Mamoru Chiba 2017-05-05 18:58:01 75856
"It's from him," says Mamoru quietly, firmly. "It's from him. I have no idea if he remembers what I showed him, but I remember what I saw. And if he does remember-- I don't know if he made some kind of construct to be able to process it, I don't know how he interpreted it. But the letter--"

Here's where Mamoru comes around the counter, glancing briefly at Naru and giving a faint and fleeting crooked smile even if she doesn't see it, but his attention's quickly back on Kunzite-- on Kazuo. He holds out a hand, on the side not holding the letter, and it's an offer. "The letter's real. I'm going to courier a letter back, since otherwise it won't arrive in time. Maybe I'll just drop it off myself while he's still at work. I'm going to tell him of course he's welcome to come visit. It's not an imposition. And we're going to have a civil and stilted and awkward and uncomfortable visit, and I'm going to try to minimize that if you want me to."

His voice is softer, then, and his expression earnest, but not desperately so. There's conviction there. "Once upon a time, he was a different person. That person is still a possibility, even if he's buried so deep, even if he's forgotten how to be real."
Kunzite 2017-05-05 19:09:38 75861
"Pamphlets would be perfect." Kazuo draws a breath, then lets it out, before taking Mamoru's offered hand. "Well. The worst that can happen is that if he froths at the mouth enough, we'll have to clean the floor afterward, and that's not exactly unusual." He considers that for a moment, then adds, "I take that back. The actual worst that can happen is that Usagi's father decides to visit at the same time. Is there anything we can do to avoid that?"
Naru Osaka 2017-05-05 19:16:30 75865
"He shouldn't." Naru replies almost absently. There's a flicker of a smile for Mamoru, and for the accepting of the hand by Kazuo. "He's almost always got things on, Friday afternoons. I wouldnt expect to see him doing social calls." She pauses as she takes a few steps to dunk the cloth in warm soapy water to be able to wipe down the drink shelf. "Unless he's been doing social calls here on Fridays for approximately forever."
Mamoru Chiba 2017-05-05 19:22:42 75866
The hand is both the comfort of contact, and proof of the conviction behind the voice, and the knowledge that it's going to be a battle, but it's an important one and it's one Mamoru's more than willing to fight or help fight. And love and protectiveness and ... amusement ...? Oh: Kenji.

Mamoru laughs and shakes his head, eyes going merry behind the glass. "No, he hasn't," he tells Naru, "We'll be safe." His attention flickers back to Kunzite and he reassures, "If necessary I'll ask Usa to run interference, though."

And then there's an anxious hope that's also an apology in there, and Mamoru lets go Kunzite's hand to take his phone out of his pocket, then starts paging back through photos. "Um-- I went in your room to get a blanket for him. All the things you'd moved out from university, he'd-- they were back. Set up. Where they went. And there was a picture on your desk. And-- he was so-- he couldn't understand why you stopped visiting her, at first, when I was just telling him you couldn't remember, you didn't remember... maybe now he understands, but-- I thought you might, I thought it might help if you saw."

He can't quite meet Kunzite's eyes at first, but then he finds the picture, and he offers Kazuo his phone, and he finally looks up.
Kunzite 2017-05-05 19:29:18 75867
The picture on the phone, if Naru looks at it, shows three people: a composed man in a black suit, maybe in his early thirties; a darker woman seated beside him, smiling, in a pencil skirt and a blouse that would not have been regrettable if it had not been the early-to-mid nineties and therefore demanded shoulderpads; an intent three-year-old in her lap, possibly considering how best to disassemble the camera and free the little men inside stuck painting the pictures. Yes, the three-year-old has white hair. The darker woman has the same gray eyes, too.

Kunzite's glance is automatic, reflexive, and there's no actual change to his expression; he goes still for a moment, that's all. The hint of a frown comes after he turns away, and it might be for the soda cans, or for the dishes lined up to be done. (... because anyone here is going to believe that. Sure.)
Naru Osaka 2017-05-05 19:37:38 75868
Naru peeks. Because she can't help but peek, although she hardly goes crawling over anyone for a better look. She even manages not to audibly D'awww at pre-schooler Kazuo.

Naru leans into the fridge, because she is of a size that requires nearly crawling into the fridge to be able to reach the bits at the back as she wipes out errant crumbs and random smears that accumulate in well used fridges.
Mamoru Chiba 2017-05-05 19:45:29 75870
It's not a flinch. It's maybe something that resembles the regret that comes from the same place as the regret for his initial misstep with Hiroshi, but there's no frustration, no anger. Just -- just definitely wanting to make it up to Kunzite, to Kazuo, somehow. Mamoru gives Naru another little flicker of a smile, and then he goes to take a can of orange soda, and he pockets his phone, and he slips past the two of them back to the kitchen doorframe. On his way, there's a brief touch of his fingertips to the back of Kunzite's hand -- apology and quiet and the option to stop him, even stop him out of Naru's sight in a little while if he so desires -- and then he's going out the door.

"I'm writing the letter. I'll probably leave in about half an hour," he says over his shoulder, and vanishes around the corner.
Kunzite 2017-05-05 19:49:11 75873
Kazuo's hand turns under Mamoru's touch, clasping at those fingertips for a moment -- it's all right; that he's unsettled is all right -- but he lets go.

And turns to watch Mamoru leave, but not, perhaps, for the reasons that Mamoru expected.

"At least someone's drinking that stuff," he says aside to Naru instead.
Naru Osaka 2017-05-05 20:00:02 75875
Naru turns, coming oh so very close to bonking her head on the shelf above as she spots a missing can of orange soda from the herd and there's a grin as she crawls back out. "Breeding. I'm telling you, I'm pretty sure they're breeding."

The rag gets tossed back into the sink and Naru holds out her hands for items to get refilled back onto the freshly filled shelf.

"May I meet him?" Naru asks calmly, quietly even.
Kunzite 2017-05-05 20:05:26 75876
Kazuo resignedly hands her cans. They can go at the back of the shelf. Far at the back. Maybe they'll fill them up forward along one side, so Mamoru can always reach one. It is, after all, his place. "I'd suggest we alternate them with something else, but they might hybridize. Orange cola does not sound like the best new fad."

There's a pause at her question. "Why wouldn't you be able to?" he asks. "If you're inclined. Even if he weren't visiting -- he intruded on your life; it'd be only fair that you be able to do the same back."

'Even if he weren't visiting.' Because, apparently, anyone who comes here is obviously fair game for Naru.
Naru Osaka 2017-05-05 20:16:19 75878
"Apparently orange root beer is actually really good. I haven't tried it, but if I'm at a fast food place where you can mix and match, I might." Naru comments as she arranges soda cans such that there's a thin line of orange at least accessible, but no one needs ALL of them right up front.

"Because it feels vaguely like imposing." Naru replies, shifting conversational gears with ease. "I like people. I seem to almost specialize in chatting with people who are fairly overwhelmed by all of the weird in our lives. I can imagine he's fairly overwhelmed."
Kunzite 2017-05-05 20:25:13 75880
"He passed out," Kazuo says in one of his blander tones. "That would seem to indicate 'fairly,' yes." A handful of condiments are selected to go back into the refrigerator, still intact. Everything fresh will be replaced, the still-edible parts turned into dinner rather than going back to storage. "I'd have expected him to take the opportunity to ignore our existence entirely, henceforth. He's been looking forward to being able to do that for close to two decades now. But if you'd like to try to chat with him, you're welcome to."
Naru Osaka 2017-05-05 20:57:17 75884
"Alright, so that's possibly one of the more extreme reactions." Naru allows as she tucks condiments back into their place. Just taking out the accumulated odds and ends makes a big difference in how much space there is.

It's going to be a bit of an odd dinner though. Stir fry, ftw!

"Curiosity might have won." Naru points out as she closes the door briefly to make the 'I have been open too long' beeping stop. "I don't expect he'll have any interest in chatting with me, but I would like to meet him."
Kunzite 2017-05-05 21:01:24 75885
"I could just introduce you to a silently disapproving mannequin. It'd be roughly an equivalent experience." Kazuo glances at the container of muffins, considers it, then takes one rather than actually, oh, putting it away.
Naru Osaka 2017-05-05 21:04:24 75887
"Speaking as a teen girl in Japan, there is a wide breadth and depth of silently disapproving male mannequins." Naru comments dryly, a little smirk touching her lips. "The nuances are subtle, but present. One leans to interpret them." She gestures to the muffins. "I'd like one too please, cause I think we're done with the fridge."
Kunzite 2017-05-05 21:12:41 75891
Kazuo clearly has no idea of to whom she might be referring. Ahem.

He passes Naru the muffin he'd already retrieved, and gets a second for himself. "For which we should all be grateful to you." He may mean for the fridge. He probably means for the fridge. "I wonder what that detective of his told him about you."
Naru Osaka 2017-05-05 21:18:43 75892
"It's my pleasure." Naru is probably talking about the fridge. Maybe?

Post-fridge and muffin calls for coffee, and she absently moves to climb onto the counter to be able to retrieve the preferred mugs for coffee. "Probably very little of interest. I am, for most intents and purposes, very boring." Naru comments. "School, clubs, art. There's not going to be anything in the detective's records about any of my mystical encounters after all."
Kunzite 2017-05-05 21:22:00 75893
"Daughter of a single-parent jeweler --"

And that's where Kazuo stops, which is why Naru's climb onto the counter is not interrupted this time.

His expression is very slight, but what there is of it is even more peculiar than earlier. "... Forgive me if I hope that he dislikes you. Against the chance, fortunately small, that he might take it into his head to try to court your mother."

(There might be no survivors.)
Naru Osaka 2017-05-05 21:25:19 75894
Naru offers down mugs, knelt on the counter and she starts to giggle softly. "It's okay. He can like or dislike me all he wants, I think my mother's seeing someone. Who I am pretty sure, isn't your father. I can't be /certain/, cause she's being all subtle and shy and weird about it, cause of course she is, but she seems pretty happy, and a lot of her meetings seem to include going for drinks. And coming home late."

Naru grins as she hops down. "So I think we're safe."
Kunzite 2017-05-05 21:31:31 75895
"Excellent. Your mother deserves to be spared the necessity of committing polite murder." Mugs are accepted, and Kazuo moves to fill them and return one for its due doctoring. Then he glances across at the salvaged cabbage, presumably starting to consider its fate this evening. "No further trouble in the shop, lately?"
Naru Osaka 2017-05-05 21:35:13 75896
"Thanks." Naru accepts her mug and opens the fridge yet again to acquire the cream to doctor her coffee. She doesn't yet subscribe to the 'as its poured' theory of coffee drinking.

"The shop has been busy, but with perfectly normal people spending money." Naru nods as she takes a sip of coffee. "No cards dragging anyone through the ceiling, no necklaces unlocking powers, and no crazed aliens screaming about world domination while draining people. Which is always a feature."
Kunzite 2017-05-05 21:39:00 75897
"It has been quiet on the crazed alien front. That's worrisome." Kazuo breaks a piece off his muffin, thoughtful. "Perhaps we can put Sailor Earth in that category, so that its vacuum doesn't draw anyone else in."
Naru Osaka 2017-05-05 21:42:54 75898
"I think she totally qualifies." Naru nods in agreement. "Crazed at the very least. And mind controlling people, and bent on whiney world domination, which is even worse than arrogant world domination if you ask me." She sets her coffee down to reach for her muffin. Her attention settles on the cabbage, and the eggplant sitting next to it, considering options there.
