It's late afternoon in the mansion, and Lamya has discovered the television. It's not something she's really payed attention to before but now she's sitting on a couch in the living room, eyes glued to some strange sitcom. Next to her is a box of donuts, half eaten.
Jiaying Maki makes her way downstairs, towling off her hair and looking aggravated. She's wearing a pair of PJ pants and a light t-shirt. she also has pure white hair at this point, which based on the angry ranting in Chinese, is probably what she's upset about.
Spotting Lamya, she waves and says, "Been a while." Switching to Japanese easily enough.
Lamya looks up over the couch at her roomate and scootches over to make room for her, while nodding. "Indeed. It's.... been a trying week for me. It seems that it has been just as trying for you."
Jiaying Maki makes her way over and settles down alongside her, then pulls her hair back, ties it with a bit of ribbon and says, "I've had worse weeks. Other than being stuck as a small fuzzy creature the whole time and hearing all of the jokes about going for a walk."
Lamya pulls her legs up under her, tucking in her feet. "I understand how you feel," she says, nodding. "I... when I run out of power I have a form that I revert to." She dips her hand into the box of donuts, pulling out one that's frosted in chocolate. "People have told me it is cute."
Jiaying Maki shakes her head and says, "I've never reverted before. I didn't think that was a thing I did." She shrugs after a moment of introspection while adding, "It's probably the other fox." which she emphasizes by holding up the other, newer tail. "She's grouchy, but helpful."
Lamya's head tilts curiously. "You gew a new tail," she says voice piqued in interest. "How did that happen?"
Jiaying Maki pulls her knees up to her chin and watches the TV idly while saying, "I think it happened when the monster-thing after Kagami ate my magic. She jumped into me, I guess? Sort of? She was more a spirit than alive at that point really."
Lamya 's head tilts the other way. "Kagami or the monster thing jumped into you?
Jiaying Maki looks confused and asks, "The what? No the thing that attacked me was some old power hungry spider. It had been sealed away. The fox saved me. I guess because she was tired of being out in the middle of nowhere either way."
"Ah!" exclaims Lamya. "I think I understand. So she is part of you now?"
Jiaying Maki looks down at herself, then back over, then shrugs. "I think so, yeah. She likes to talk to me when she's awake. She's super lazy, even by my standards."
Lamya shakes her head. "I do not think I would be happy with that arrangement. Dragons are... solitary creatures by nature." She bites her lower lip and looks down at her feet. "It has been an adjustment learing to be comfortable living with you and Lacrima." She blinks and hurredly amends, "I mean, not that I don't mind! I like it! But..." she trails off before putting her foot in her mouth even more.
Jiaying Maki leans forward, stifling a yawn for a moment before lounging back again. "I like my quiet time, but she's... interesting? A source of history." She gestures upstairs, "She also doesn't intrude too often. So far. I think she's enjoying watching? I think she's watching? It's weird. It's not quite possession or anything."
"Fascinating," is all Lamya can think of to say. "This goes beyond all my experience. Is this a common thing to happen with your kind?"
Jiaying Maki watches Lamya like she's sure she's being joked with. "No. No it isn't. Do you regularly run into someone flying white and red?" Then she pauses and adds, "I mean magically, not the armies that flew it."
Lamya admits, "I have never met a magical fox girl before, so I do not have anything to compare you with." She does say this as if this is a bad thing. "Remember, I had been asleep for almost two thousand years. There's a lot that's 'normal' that I find baffling, so it's hard to tell these things apart."
Jiaying Maki shakes her head and gestures like she's suggesting 'around', "We're older than that. I'm not of course, but we're all over even. Just, not always with the split tail thing. I think it's a regional thing, sort of like- anyway." she points to herself, "Our family history is of monsters and horror. The fox that helped me is a trickster with some horror. Your side of the world I think was just tricksters?"
Lamya looks thoughtful for a moment. "Possibly. I don't seem to remember many tricksters or other monsters at the time." Her lips purse in thought. "Though that may be because there was a dragon in residince. Other creatures do get skittish around us."
Jiaying Maki holds up a finger and says, "I'd always heard the legendary Renard was something of an idiot. Or fearless. They kind of go hand in hand." She then scowls, "Trust me on that one."
Glancing over her shoulder, she asks, "Why isolate yourselves? It's so much fun annoying the human side of things. I like the yaoguai world, but there's something new here too you know?"
Lamya takes a while in answering. "Part of it is our nature. We're just... solitary. Dragons aren't social creatures like wolves or bees. Part of it is defensive." She looks over a Jiaying, while taking another donut out of the box. "As powerful as we are, it's nothing compare to what humans can accomplish should they band together and put their minds to it. If you get more than two of us together at a time, humans start to get nervous. And when they get nervous they get dangerous."
Jiaying Maki shakes her head and asks, "Did you ever wonder the root causes of it all? I mean like, maybe something happened back then and it just keeps coming back and back again."
She runs her fingers through her hair, looks to Lamya an shrugs it all of. "Idle curiousity mostly."
Lamya shakes her head. "I haven't. I always felt it was the natural order of things, to be honest." Not that she ever isn't honest. "It's just a difference in species. Dragons don't think like humans do." She reflects, "I didn't think like humans do. But whatever the Princess did to save me, made me a little bit human, too."
Jiaying Maki taps her fingers against her knees as she thinks. "Do you think she really did anything? There's a lot of overlap between people. Monster-y or not. A demon's got wants and desires and aren't aalways evil after all." She pauses, "Well, usually they are, but they're needed for balance, you know?"
Lamya nods in agreement. "I do. But believe me. I was a dragon for around two hundred years before I became what I am today. I could tell the difference." And... is that a blush that starts to tinge the cheeks of the dragon girl? "And once I learned to stop resisting it I began to enjoy it. The... socialness of humanity. Of having friends. These are things dragons just don't do, you understand."
Jiaying Maki points and says, "That's what I mean, I think it's just the exposure to others. It's why I was told to come here, erh-why I was told to stay here even after I kept messing up. They think I needed exposure to the more mundane things." She pauses and adds, "I definitely needed it. I've been an idiot. I need to... stop. Think more, you know?"
Lamya contemplates this while chewing thoughtfully on a donut. "I had been exposed to humans before," she says. "Many times, in fact, but it wasn't until the Princess did I actually want to be around one of them." She shakes her head. "I don't think that's entirely it. Something in me had changed, and is changing me still."
Jiaying Maki points and says, "Eating the raiding party doesn't count as being around humans. I meant making friends with them. Or you know, falling in love with one." She's not judging, she's got a human... mostly, girlfriend. She'll have to check what the newest book is doing to her. Maybe even have words wtih the book. With the threat of a lighter nearby.
"Love?" scoffs Lamya. "Dragons don't fall in love." There's the old Lamya we know and love. "Imagine it. Me. In love with a human. Hah!" She rips apart another donut in two, stuffing half into her mouth. "Please. Can you see me moping around, pining for... some.. " Realization. "Oh Gods."
Jiaying Maki shakes her head and laughs, "You mean you don't get pink around the edges when you think about her, like you did earlier? The idea of having her there to hug?" She's teasing, poking just a bit, but it's light enough for now she figures. Then of course, there's that realization and she cracks up for a moment. "It's not so bad to realize, is it?"
Lamya does, in fact, pink a little bit at the thought. She pouts, and presses her index fingers together and mumbles, "I've never hugged anybody before."
Jiaying Maki tilts her head and considers that quietly. Then scootscootscoots over. Looking at the girl, she suddenly leans over and tries to give her a light hug. Something between friends, but still, a form of closeness. It's worth a try. And it might be funny at the very least."
Hugging Lamya is like trying to hug a cat. She's stiff, at first, completely unsure as to what is going on, but when it's clear that she's not being strangled or smothered or anything she realizes that, hey, this is kind of nice, and relaxes. "That was..." she says hesitantly when it's over. "... a hug?"
Jiaying Maki shrugs and leans back against the couch again and snrks, "Yes, yes that was a hug Lamya. They usually make you feel better." She pauses and adds, "Except maybe Norie, but she's an outlier case and you should ask before hugging her."
"Well, yes, becuase she could inadvertently drain some of your energy," agrees Lamya. She sits and thinks about this hug for a good long while, finishing off another donut. "I have to say, it was not entirely unpleasant."
Jiaying Maki shakes her head and lounges properly, looking quite content to be lazy after her attempt at teasing went, well, well enough. "It's something you enjoy with friends and loved ones, or for comfort sometimes even. That warm embrace is a nice thing."
Lamya looks thoughtful. "It's not something Dragons do, but, perhaps, maybe they should start doing it."
Jiaying Maki nods in agreement, "Definitely. Should get others doing it. I bet they'd have fun with it. Also cooked food is so much better than trying to eat someone." She pauses, "I mean in theory. I haven't eaten anyone. The worst I did was chew on furniture."
Lamya makes a sour face. "I wouldn't recommend it. I only did it to keep the peace, but it wasn't my preference." She shakes her head. "And I wouldn't have agreed to it if I had known that delicious things like donuts existed."
