It had been a few days since Millie and Akari's adventure with the Wolkenritter, and even though it would take more than a few days for her ribs to heal, Millie knew she couldn't just sit around. Too much sitting around made her stir crazy, and she knew she needed to do something to combat that. Usually it was easy; just grab some ingredients and start cooking. Yet she had found that moving around too much was a literal pain, so cooking for now was a less than appealing option. She could always order in, but getting delivery to a dorm room in an academy was a different kind of pain she wasn't sure she wanted to deal with right now either...

Instead, the Cure picked up her cell and sent a quick text to Rashmi asking if she was free to grab lunch and maybe talk about some things. It was a strange text to come out of the blue, especially since Millie had almost all but gone dark during the holiday. Even so, Millie hoped it wasn't too strange a request for the Device user.

Millie had already been making her way slowly towards Korma Chameleon, her gaze drifting subconsciously over towards where she knew Gullwing Coffee to be. She wore her usual attire despite the chilly weather, cleaned to remove the boot marks and the small tears from the pavement had been sewn closed by hand. The Canuck silently pushed through the door of the restaurant, doing her best not to look as haggard as she felt and half succeeding.
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-13 05:38:47 102606
The text was answered with a prompt agreement, and a quick << Are you OK? >> that, given the lack of a follow-up, seems to have been at least partly rhetorical; when one asks to 'talk about some things,' okayness tends to stand out for its absence.

Which is why there's a fort of sorts constructed out of books, at a table in the back by the door to the apartment stairwell. On the table, still steaming and probably served only minutes earlier, are a plate of triangle-shaped wraps of some sort, and a full pitcher of faintly pink smoothie-like drink.

Rashmi looks up as the door rings open, and waves to Millie with a smile. Her eyes are worried, made more obvious by the effect of her spectacles, but she keeps her silence until the Canadian finally finds her way back to the table.

It didn't take long to find Rashmi waving from what appeared to be a small citadel of literature. Despite everything, Millie couldn't help the warm lopsided grin that appeared on her face. She easily made her way to the tablefortress in the back, gingerly slipping into the seat across from Rashmi with a polite nod. Despite the long scratches on the right side of her jaw and her tired eyes, Millie was smiling softly.

"Thanks for meeting with me on such short notice. It's good to see you again, Terios-san." Millie offered in her low and slow Japanese. It was then that she noticed the food and the drink and she blinked curiously. The Canuck had no idea what these pastries were, but they smelled delicious and Millie now knew exactly what deliciousness the Korma Chameleon was capable of since her last visit.
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-13 06:03:11 102608
"Anytime, White-chan," Rashmi says with a chuckle. When her friend's eyes drop to the food, the redhead grins. "They're samosas, Papi made them fresh just an hour ago. Try one!" Standing up a bit, she pours out a full glass of the drink into a waiting glass, and sets it in front of Millie. "Here... Rose lassi too, they're really good as a pick-me-up, and... well, I thought you might need it."

Her eyes flick to the scratches, then the bags under the Canuck's eyes. "What happened?" she asks, voice soft and concerned.

As often as Rashmi has dealt with stress, defeat, and crisis, it stands to reason that she can see all the signs.
Millie White 2019-01-13 06:21:51 102611
Samosas? Samosas sounded delicious, and even though the only Lassie she knew was a Collie, Rose lassi sounded equally as delicious as samosas. Millie nodded and took a pastry, nibbling on it politely to force herself not to scarf it down then and there. At Rashmi's question, the Cure shrugged her right shoulder slightly, being careful not to move too much.

"Wolkenritter finally caught up with us." Given that it was Millie, it would be easy to surmise 'Us' meant she and Akari. There was obviously more to the story, but she found she couldn't quite get it out through the samosa she was now inhaling. Millie finished the pastry and grinned apologetically.

"You're right, these are really good. I dunno what's in them, but I could eat a mountain of 'em." Rashmi's Papi was a food Wizard and no one would be able to convince Millie otherwise. After a few moments, the grin on her face flickered. "...It was both of them. They got us right outside Gullwing Coffee, and things uh.. got a bit crazy." Crazy was one way of putting it, yes.
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-13 06:27:04 102612
"Ground beef, chickpeas, veggies and spices," Rashmi answers automatically, well used by now to describing what's in the food; it's entirely possible she could make an excellent server in a higher-class version of a place like the Korma, given her knowledge of Indian recipes. "And the lassi is mostly yogurt and rosewater. So... did they get both of you, then? Cos you look about as bad as I did a few days after."
Millie White 2019-01-13 06:36:05 102614
The automatic nature of the statement earned a chuckle from Millie that was equal parts grateful and amused. The Cure nodded to confirm that Rashmi had guessed correctly.

"Yeah... well, sort of? They ended up leaving me with half my core in tact and Akari was..." Millie paused and her brows furrowed. "Signum gave mana back to Akari from the Tome. They thought they killed her and they panicked." Millie finished, looking up at Rashmi with a vaguely concerned expression. Perhaps crazy hadn't been the correct word. Complicated was more accurate, now that she thought about it.
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-13 06:41:03 102615
"Wait, what?" The samosa pauses on its way to Rashmi's mouth, reprieve granted by the sheer complicatedness of Millie's story. Wide-eyed, Rashmi stares at her friend across the table, then a slow frown begins to spread across her face. "That... ... ....huh. Is Akari-chan okay? Because um.... I would not have guessed they'd try to take back a theft..."

Subsiding in thought, Rashmi pushes the plate of samosas across the table, a wordless gesture for Millie to eat her fill.
Millie White 2019-01-13 06:54:55 102617
That was about the reaction Millie had expected. Rashmi was right, generally it wouldn't make sense for a thief to give back what they had stolen. A frustrated hand swiped Millie's bangs out of her tired face.

"Akari-san is... she's okay. Kinomoto-san got Ritterglocke to her in time, but she has darkness corruption. She said she feels like Nightbell again." Millie said quietly. There had definitely been a moment or two where Millie had thought Akari had actually died, but that likely didn't have to be stated. Millie gratefully began to devour the samosas in such a way that was both feral and polite. Ravenous, yet it left no mess. After a few samosas she spoke up again.

"Signum hesitated before extracting my linker core, and both of them were honestly scared that they killed Akari. Did Zafira... seem hesitant at all to you?" Millie asked, but her gaze held concern. Ordinarily she wouldn't mention the incident so as not to make Rashmi relive it, but the Cure needed to be sure about this if she wanted to formulate a plan.
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-13 07:03:02 102618
Knowing the question would come up, Rashmi had taken care to steel herself for the memories. And even still, it requires a quiet moment with closed eyes, and her samosa turned over in her hands, before she finally speaks.

"He didn't.... really say much of anything. But it was like... I got this feeling? That he was just trying to not engage so I wouldn't be a person, just.... y'know, a target? I tried to reach him, but he wouldn't even really answer me."

Sighing, the redhead takes a large bite of her snack, using a full mouth as an excuse to get herself back in order. "...But what you guys said about how you found me, I... Iunno. Nico wasn't bothering to filter the broadcast he made, so I'm almost positive he knew someone was coming, and he made sure I'd get found."
Millie White 2019-01-13 07:14:39 102619
Millie's fist clenched on the table. She hated to do this to Rashmi and it showed all over her face, but she stayed silent until the redhead had finished. Everything the Device user said seemed consistent with how the Wolkenritter had acted during their confrontation. They hesitated, they weren't looking to kill anyone, and she had definitely seen regret in Signum's eyes.

"That lines up with their behavior a few days ago. This is helpful information. Thank you, Terios-san." Millie said softly, her concerned emerald gaze clearly asking 'Are you okay?'.
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-13 07:18:35 102620
The silent question is answered, at first, with an equally silent shrug. "More good days than bad," she says with a quiet sigh. "My magic's mostly back, but Nico and I have been taking it easy; using the time to come up with ideas and strategies for next time. I only met the one, so anything we come up with is gonna be incomplete, but... it helps, y'know?"
Millie White 2019-01-13 07:34:35 102621
Millie nodded, but her expression was soft. "Ideas and strategies are good, they're probably exactly what we need right now. Mor importantly, I'm glad your magic is mostly back to normal, that's great news." The Canuck took a sip of the rose lassi and her eyes widened. This was fantastic. How had she not known about lassi before now? Millie took a few more sips before speaking up again.

"I asked Signum who her master was, when she was taking my core. They're Cloud Knights, and Knights serve a Liege, so... I figured I'd ask. She said 'Someone far greater than I'. So uh... I guess we know they have a master running around somewhere?" Millie offered before pausing and adding sadly, "...She sounded regretful."
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-13 07:40:27 102622
"Well," Rashmi says with a light shrug, "this was before your time, but um... Gull-chan's girlfriend needed to have her Linker Core removed. ...I like Gull-chan, I really do, and I try to like Sharpe-san, but like... Y'know how some people are just... predisposed to bad ideas? Yeah... Anyway because of that I kind of knew I'd be able to get back in action, so... Just, y'know, didn't want to waste the time."

She subsides, nibbling on her snack a bit more in thought. "...But why would she regret saying that? I mean Belkan, so it could be pride, but like... Why is this the first we're hearing about a master if it was someone stronger?"
Millie White 2019-01-14 01:59:34 102630
Millie nodded slowly. It WAS before her time, and she wouldn't even begin to pretend she knew anything about Sharpe-san. The Cure had only heard about her in passing, and usually only in relation to linker cores. Her expression eased slightly when the moral of the story was that Rashmi always knew her magic would come back. Millie knew it would too, but she was just happy it had come to pass. When Rashmi got down more to theorizing, Millie's brows furrowed in thought.

"I'm not sure she meant saying what she did. Something felt off." Millie paused for a moment, as if trying to figure out how to word this. "I didn't get the impression that they were doing this just because it was a job. It holds... some kind of significance to them. I'm not sure what, but it doesn't feel like the WANT to be doing it. Maybe they think they HAVE to..." She trailed off, her gaze burning a hole through the table in thought.
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-14 02:06:00 102631
"So it's important, but they don't want to do it, but they don't have a choice, and it's for their 'master,'" Rashmi murmurs. "The question is.... is the book the master, or someone who owns it?"

For awhile, she stares down at her half-eaten samosa in thought. When she speaks again, it's with an apparent nonsequitur. "White-chan? I've been planning to ask a friend to teach me how to fight. Like, without magic. I think... maybe we both should ask. Akari-san's going to be all right, she just needs a little bit of a purifying and I know a bunch of people who could do that. But... I think maybe we could get a lot of use out of learning how to fight in ways a Belkan Knight isn't going to know much about, y'know?"
Millie White 2019-01-14 02:23:14 102634
Rashmi's summary caused Millie's gaze to flicker suddenly. She hadn't thought of that. Honestly she couldn't be sure that the Wolkenritter were draining people for their Master, per se, but if the shoe fit... That, and she hadn't even thought of the BOOK potentially being the master. This was why talking to Rashmi was always helpful; she was the smartest person Millie knew.

The Canuck only got a few moments to think about what Rashmi had just said before she was following it up with something different. Without a shadow of a doubt, Millie knew Rashmi wasn't saying this to rub in the fact that she had now fought the Wolkenritter twice and gotten her arse handed to her both times. She KNEW this, but it didn't stop the small, light sigh that escaped her.

"I know. Akari-san is tough... with some purifying, she will bounce right back." There was something in her voice akin to hesitation, like there might be more but she wasn't willing to come right out and say it. "As for fighting, I agree... I only came into this whole thing knowing swordplay. I've been learning a lot from Alexis, but... every bit helps." Millie looked at Rashmi with a curious expression. "What did you have in mind?"
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-14 02:30:59 102637
"Well I have this friend," Rashmi says, chewing on her lower lip. "She's learned a lot from a lot of different people, just... she has.... confidence issues? And I think it'd do her a lot of good to be a teacher, since she tends to think she can't really contribute to much. But she also learned to fight from Sailor Jupiter and Apatite, and frankly I'd be terrified to ask either of them for the same thing. And as much as my friend's learned...? Something that unpredictable would do a lot to keep these Wolkenritter guessing, y'know? .....Also I'm kind of tired of getting cratered into a corner."

She manages a wry smile, for an instant. "Akari-san knows what I'm talking about."
Millie White 2019-01-14 02:42:57 102639
This friend of Rashmi's ... she sounded capable. While Millie hadn't met Sailor Jupiter, she had heard enough to know she was a powerful contender. That, and Millie had actually seen Apatite fight. It had only been some lower level youma, but the ease at which they had been dispatched wasn't anything to scoff at. If Rashmi's friends had learned to fight from the two of them, they had to be capable... right?

"Hmm... that's a good point. A mixture of styles would keep an opponent guessing the whole fight through. I've never met Sailor Jupiter, but I know Apatite is a force to be reckoned with. I bet your friend has a whole slew of things she could teach us." At the mention of being cratered, Millie winced ever so slightly, even after the playful jab about Akari.

"You and I both. I don't... have a great track record, exactly. I shouldn't count fighting the Wolkenritter without magic, technically, but even then..."
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-14 02:47:17 102640
"Track records really don't matter, Millie-chan," Rashmi says, looking up and smiling gently. "There's an old saying Papi taught me -- Japan is full of them, but -- it goes like this; 'Fall down nine times, get up ten.' Your magic's going to come back, as long as you want it to. Even with your linker core damaged, it'll grow back on its own. But if we learn everything we can, and plan as best we can while we're recovering, just imagine how much better we'll both be when we're back at a hundred percent."
Millie White 2019-01-14 02:59:35 102643
It was a tough pill to swallow, but Millie knew that Rashmi was right. Track records didn't matter. She wasn't doing this to gain a high score, or to be the 'best' at anything. At the end of the day, what mattered was why someone did what they did... and Millie knew exactly what her reasons were. The taller girl's shoulders eased slightly as she leaned back. Millie let out a sigh that was half defeat, half a pained wheeze.

"You're right, it's just frustrating..." She mused. After a moment, the dourness in her gaze lifted slightly. "You were right about my magic too. I tried to henshin when they attacked... it didn't work, but I felt the connection this time. Even before they attacked, I swore I could smell the faintest hints of magic sometimes. Once my linker core recovers, I think I'll be good to go." Was there any way to be sure? No, not really, but Millie was an optimist. Millie looked up at Rashmi was a soft grin. "Your Papi is a smart man, Terios-san."
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-14 03:08:12 102644
"He'd say he married Mami, so that's proof he is," Rashmi chuckles. "But yeah... see, you're already recovering. Just keep getting calories in you, and before long you'll be back in the game. And if you spend that time preparing, you'll be super ready for anything." Optimism, it seems, is nearly a simple feature of being mahou.

"You'll be all right, Millie-chan. I don't know much about Cure magic, but... I know the people who use it tend to be the type that'll always stand between evil and innocents. And you've got friends to stand beside you, y'know?"
Millie White 2019-01-14 03:21:46 102647
Millie allowed the warm smile to spread across her face. The way Rashmi spoke about her parents reminded Millie of her own. The homesickness had eased slightly since she had admitted it to Akari, and the warmth of the Korma Chameleon unexpectedly seemed to ease it as well. The Canuck wouldn't complain, that was for sure.

"I'm not worried about me. I trusted you when you said my magic would return if I wanted it to, and you were right. Akari-san has been protecting me since our run in with Tarnished, and Alexis is giving me the skills I need to protect the people I care about... I've made some great friends in Tokyo, and I don't really know all that much about Cure magic yet, but... I'll do everything I can, magic or not."
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-14 03:27:26 102648
"That's the only thing any of us can do, Millie-chan," Rashmi says, her smile widening. "And these Wolkenritter? THey're a threat now, but they all are at first. But the more we grow and learn, the better equipped we are for handling them."
Millie White 2019-01-14 03:46:18 102651
Millie nodded, the smile finally reaching her tired eyes. She silently finished her rose lassi. Samosas and lassi... she had needed this more than she had thought, and she wasn't just referencing the food.

"... Thanks, Terios-san, for always trying to reassure me. I get caught up in details sometimes, so I'm grateful that there's someone who isn't afraid to tell me to smarten up." Millie remarked lightly with a smile. She wasn't stupid (mostly), she knew that she was prone to some rash decisions in the heat of the moment. It was a problem, and she WAS trying to work on it. Millie's gaze turned thoughtful as she peered over at Rashmi.

"Akari-san wants to try and help them. The Wolkenritter, I mean. I agree with her, but we can't just run at them with unbridled optimism and faith. We need a plan. I'd love to learn anything your friend can teach me in the meantime, if you both would have me."
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-14 03:50:45 102652
"I think you're both right," Rashmi says without hesitation. "We definitely need a plan, and if we can help them we should. It's the best way to stop an enemy, after all... Make them your friend."

Pouring both Millie and herself another glass, she leans back in her chair. "Also... anytime. Seriously, Millie-chan, if you need anything let me know. Even if it's just to talk."
Millie White 2019-01-14 04:11:14 102653
Millie had a feeling that not everyone could be reasoned with the way perhaps Akari sought to help the Wolkenritter... but from what she had experienced, she believed they could help them. All they had to do was try. At Rashmi's last comment, the tips of the Canuck's ears reddened in hue and she looked away, but there was a grateful if not lopsided grin on her face.

"Honestly it's just nice to sit down and think things through. The holidays have been... hectic, to say the least. If it's not running around drifting Santa's sleigh into grinches, it's getting linker ganked for your Birthday. I'm just glad to sit down and have a moment with good friends and good food." Millie mumbled truthfully.
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-14 04:20:36 102654
"...Oh no, it was your birthday?" Rashmi says, eyes wide and dismayed. "That's horrible! ...Well at least we can make sure your next birthday is, like, a hundred times better? But until then.... Yeah, good food and good friends, you can definitely always find both of them here."
Millie White 2019-01-14 04:30:00 102655
Millie chuckled a bit ruefully at Rashmi's dismay.

"It's okay. Akari-san was upset I didn't say anything, but there were more important things going on. I'm not big on Birthdays anyway, so as long as I don't get maimed when I turn seventeen, I should be golden." The Canuck said jokingly as she leaned back in her seat. She winced and took a shallow breath, but the smile remained on her face.

"Do you mind if I ask who the friend is you were thinking about asking for fighting advice? I won't be able to do any kind of training for a little while yet, but I'd like to be ready for when I am." She asked before taking a few more sips of lassi.
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-14 04:33:48 102656
"Clotho," Rashmi says, smiling weakly at Millie's joke; sometimes, the whistle past the graveyard is a touch off tune, after all. "Magical Girl Clotho. She's a friend of Lacchan's and mine and a few others, but don't worry. As far as I know, she's either in on the Akari-chan situation, or way outside of it."
Millie White 2019-01-14 04:46:45 102657
Millie stopped and blinked. Clotho? Like, Magical Girl Clotho? Millie's brows furrowed gently. Unmei... the last she had heard, Unmei had also been targetted by the Wolkenritter. Admittedly, she had only met Unmei once, but she immediately understood what Rashmi meant about the lack of confidence.

"...Ah, I've met Clotho. I didn't realize she had that kind of experience under her belt, but I guess that's where the confidence part comes in." Millie smiled gently. She liked Unmei, if she was being honest. Confidence aside, the young girl was kind if not a bit nervous.
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-14 04:51:01 102658
"Yeah," Rashmi chuckles. "Honestly she's been on both sides of the whole situation, and she's learned a lot from a lot of different people. Which is why I think this'll help her; teachers, especially fighting teachers... they're respected, y'know? I get the feeling she doesn't feel respected a whole lot."
Millie White 2019-01-14 04:57:20 102659
Millie was silent for a few moments. This was to help Clotho as much as it was to help them with fighting. A warmth spread through Millie's chest at the realization of what Rashmi was trying to do, and that warmth reflected clearly in her emerald gaze when she looked across the table at the Device user.

"You're really something, Terios-san. I'm sure Clotho-san will be a fine teacher, and I think you're right; it could definitely help her with her confidence. I got the same feeling when I met her... almost like she feels she doesn't count. We definitely have to fix that." She mused quietly. If they could help each other, it only made sense, didn't it?
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-14 04:59:26 102660
Rashmi Terios bobs her head. "We really do, because she does. It's just... hard to get someone to recognize that, so..." Rashmi shrugs, cheeks flushing at the compliment. "It's just people, y'know? I didn't have a whole lot of friends before Nico, so I learned how to watch people, see what makes them tick."
Millie White 2019-01-14 05:10:27 102661
Millie nodded silently, but the smile didn't fade. Rashmi could try and hand wave it away, but the Device user wasn't the only one with the ability to read people. While it wasn't because she had a lack of friends, Millie had always been sensitive to what people were feeling. By no means was she an Empath like Masu, but empathy in general wasn't exclusive to Empaths. Empathy, compassion, and the desire to help went a long way in the end.

"Of course she does." Millie said softly, "We'll help her see that, no matter what. No one deserves to live life thinking they don't matter, especially not someone like Clotho-san. Still... knowing what makes people tick doesn't mean you're obligated to help them... but you do. I have a feeling you always do, Terios-san." There was definitely admiration in the Cure's voice now. Admittedly she didn't know Rashmi all that well yet, but the Canuck felt confident in her assessment.
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-14 05:14:43 102662
"It's just what Mami and Papi taught me," Rashmi says with an embarrassed shrug. "If you can help people, you should. Besides, with the kind of power we have? The alternative is... well, ending up like Riventon-san. And trust me; all you have to do is say his name in earshot of most people, and you'll see why that's not exactly a road I want to go down. So... I help people. Because it's right, it's decent... And more than anything it's kind."
Millie White 2019-01-14 05:25:01 102663
Just what her parents taught her, eh? Millie's eyes closed and her face was left with a warm expression. Having a police officer for a father meant that she had been taught many of the same things. Help the people that need help, not because it was a duty, but because it was the right thing to do. Life was precious and it should be protected at all costs when possible. Growing up, her father had been her hero for that reason, so it was no surprise that Millie strove to emulate him whenever she could.

"I've only heard the name Riventon, but not anything that he's done. If he's as bad as what you suggest, I don't think you have to worry. I know you won't end up like him. You're too smart and you care too much for that to happen." Millie said without hesitation, as if she were never more sure of anything she had ever said than this. More than anything, it's kind... those were good words to live by, she reckoned.
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-14 05:27:14 102664
"You're probably right," Rashmi chuckles. "And I think it's thanks mostly to having so many good friends to rely on, now. Everyone needs smartening up, sometimes... And everyone needs an example to look to. I admire my friends, Millie-chan; every one of you is someone to want to be worthy of."
Millie White 2019-01-14 05:36:37 102665
Millie wasn't often right. In fact, more often than not it was the other way around. While she wasn't exactly stupid, the words 'correct' and 'Millie White' weren't usually in the same sentence together... but when she WAS right? She knew it. She could FEEL it. Now was one such a time. To her, there was no 'probably'.

"Eh, I'm pretty sure you were awesome even before we all came along." Millie said, allowing a laugh to rumble pleasantly from her chest. Instantly she regretted it as her ribs protested, and it finished as more of a gentle wheeze.
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-14 05:41:22 102666
"Well, we'll probably never know that," Rashmi says, shaking her head. "Anyway, I need to stop making you laugh until you've healed up. Did... you need me to look up a healer? I know a few..."
Millie White 2019-01-14 05:45:16 102667
That was alright. Millie didn't need confirmation; she was already sure. At Rashmi's offer, Millie shook her head gently.

"I know a few myself now too. I should be okay, just some bruised ribs. I don't think it's actually as bad as it looks. Or sounds." The Cure said reassuringly and, most importantly, truthfully.
Rashmi Terios 2019-01-14 05:53:10 102668
"That's good to hear," Rashmi says, smiling brightly. "Out of curiosity... Are you allergic at all to mustard?"
Millie White 2019-01-14 05:56:01 102669
Millie looked Rashmi dead in the eye. "I would rather die than be allergic to mustard. So that's a no."
