The elegant living space in Kunzite and Zoisite's apartment is kept in impeccable order and utterly free of dust. But it doesn't see as much use as the other apartments' living spaces. Because the place is dominated by rowdy university students. Still, there are things that happen there. Zoisite plays the piano, for instance.

And then there's the Go board, where Kazuo and Mamoru meet for matches of an afternoon, or where a single match might get played out over the course of weeks, moves taking place when one of them happens to pass through. There are certain items that are sancrosanct, outside of the realm of pranks. That board is one of them.

In and of itself, anyhow.

It is technically not the board itself that is the problem when there is a faint sound, a trace of a naggingly and threateningly familiar tune, that causes Kazuo to lift his head and take his hand back before it can place a stone.

Mamoru just freezes, the grownup version of a sippy cup (hi Starbucks!) paused halfway to his mouth. His eyes shift to Kazuo, then the board. Slowly, he frowns, then even more slowly -- keeping his coffee upright -- leans over to look under the table. Just Kazuo's knees. He glances around the room. "It can't be in the piano," he says after a second, "no resonation."

"Also," Kazuo says, pushing himself back from the board and rising, "Zoisite would shave their heads in their sleep, and Nephrite knows it. So it's not in Zoisite's room, either." A gentle but systematic search of the upholstery begins.

It's quiet.

"Oh my god he would," says Mamoru in faint horror, with the morbid unstoppable fascination of watching a train derail. He stands up, brings his coffee over to the kitchenette so it won't get knocked over, then comes back to begin making a search of the bookshelves. "You don't suppose it's one of the ones on a random timer, do you?" he asks after a moment, taking a few books out in chunks at intervals so he can dig around behind those nearby, then putting them back.

"It would have to be. We didn't touch anything else to set it off." Kazuo frowns at Mamoru's Chair, then bypasses it; that too would have set off consequences Jadeite would prefer to avoid.

And then. Faintly.

Kazuo pivots to stare grimly at the couch he just searched, where the tune more associated with a purple dinosaur sounds like it's coming from. He settles down to one knee, bending as close to the floor as he can, and uses his phone for a flashlight. Not under the thing...

"I know they've got motion sensors too, though," Mamoru points out, turning to look at Kazuo, corner of his mouth trying not to twitch. "And it started playing as your hand got near the board. I wouldn't put it past him to get super mission impossible about it and add heat sensors too or--"

And it's playing again. "It's really muffled," he points out. "Do you think he actually opened a seam and then fixed it with the shark actually inside the couch?"
Kazuo Takeba 2019-05-01 03:33:37 104750
"Possible..." Kazuo settles down further, lying on his side, and examines the carpet closely. "No. But only because it wouldn't have occurred to him to vacuum up the evidence. I'll have to keep that possibility in mind for next time." He gets to his feet, and carefully, carefully, shifts the couch a few inches from the wall.

Nothing behind it except wall and window.

"Do you think he managed to get inside the wall from another room and fish the damned thing into place?"
Mamoru Chiba 2019-05-01 03:38:38 104751
"That's an outside wall," says Mamoru dubiously. "He'd've had to've gotten through rebar and concrete and whatever the hell else modern skyscrapers are made of, from the roof. Can't you cheat and *see* where the sound is coming from? I won't tell anyone you henshined. If you do."
Kazuo Takeba 2019-05-01 03:42:07 104752
"Well. We're running out of possibilities." Kazuo frowns around the apartment. Then pauses. "From the roof, you say."

He reaches out for the cord and opens the curtains.

And comes face to snout with a blithely dangling agent of chaos. It is good for Agent Shark that there is glass in between. It is better for Agent Shark that Kazuo values his standing in Mamoru's eyes and is thus disinclined to shatter the glass.

That said, the slow, slow caged lightning of his henshin begins to flicker and crawl its way across his skin nonetheless.

Mamoru claps his hands over his mouth, eyes wide. He takes a half step back, and then actually has to physically bite his hand to keep himself from cracking up audibly. He tries desperately to think of sad things that aren't too sad or he'll drop out of his good mood entirely, and isn't having any luck with that, so switches to puzzling annoyances from his classmates in online class forums. This works; he calms himself down.

He considers taking a picture. That's a LOT of effort they went to. But he doesn't know if the henshin-in-progress will screw it up, and besides, he's-- "I'm really enjoying the creeping sensation of doom you're making your henshin give off right now."
Kazuo Takeba 2019-05-01 03:59:35 104755
"I have no idea what you mean," says Kunzite as the lightning fades. As he lifts his hands. As darkness englobes the shark outside the window, cutting off the faint repetitive melody.

Is this the last that will be seen of Agent Shark?
