Something Personal

Fate seeks some peace and quiet away from an adoring offworld public. Rune finds her, leading to quite an in-depth discussion on many topics.

Fate Testarossa was a hero. At least, that's what people told her. It was a strange feeling, all of the attention, childen the same age as her, some of them even older, pretending to be her while they played. She felt a need to be on her best behavior, to set a good example, but did she even know what a good example was? Could she be a good role model even if she tried? She doubted...

Fleeing was easier than figuring it out. This wasn't the kind of thing that she was trained for, and if one ever finds themselves outmatched then it's generally best to retreat. She mentioned to some of the castle staff that she was going exploring around the lakes, and then she flew off into the distance. Quickly.

A while later, she's standing at the edge of a lake, looking into the eyes of her reflection. She squats next to the lake, dipping her finger into the water and watching the ripples spread.

Rune had to ask around for some hints on where Fate went, honestly surprised that her friend-slash-'nothing personal'-enemy can't be found in the city or castle at this moment. Yet people on the street at least seemed to know the general direction Fate went in, and that Fate had outright left the city was taken as sufficient hint that they needed to back off and give her some space; nobody pursued her there. It would have been a bit of a lengthy walk anyway, though some marveled that Fate could outright /fly/; a feat only matched by demons, and more importantly, queens.

Nobody pursued aside from the princess, at least. Unable to fly, she opted to make the walk a few miles outside the city and made a reasonable guess that the lake was Fate's destination. Now she finds herself staring over at Fate, and starts to open her mouth to speak... then thinks better of it, instead going quiet to watch this 'lake experiment' with silent curiosity. It's kind of nice to see 'foreigners' enjoying the scenery like this.

Fate watches as the ripples distort her wavering image in the lake. Standing up, she holds out her hand. The yellow icon on the back of her glove glows and expands into Bardiche. She holds her device in her hand, dipping the head of the axe into the lake's surface, moving it back and forth, obliterating the reflection with the spreading waves.

When she pulls Bardiche out of the water, the device pings, and Fate looks surprised. She looks behind her, sees the princess, and blushes. "Ah... hello."

Fate shakes Bardiche over the lake, as tiny drops fall from the tip and into the water. "It's a nice lake..."

Fate turns away from the water and its surface, smiling at Runealy. The smile isn't faked, persay. It's an honest smile, but there's something just a little melancholy behind it.
Runealy Waldia 2015-12-10 01:52:36 18047
Runealy allows a tiny 'huh' noise as Fate plays around more with the water... she hadn't thought to try something like that with magic energy. Then the ping-noise causes her to look a little startled, yet it's short-lived as Fate turns around.

Praising the environment here nets Fate an immediate smile back. "Thank you! This, all of this, is why we came to Earth. Seeing you relax out here like this is... it's nice! Sorry if I interrupted you, just wanted to check in and make sure you're doing okay."
Fate T. Waldia 2015-12-10 02:01:26 18048
Fate looks around at the surrounding area. So... Runealy was fighting for all of this? This is what she thought was important to her? Important enough to fight against monsters like demons for?

When her wine-red eyes turn back to Runealy, she says, "Well, it is relaxing. It's nice. My mother and I used to go out on picnics to places like this."

She looks around, at the unique flora and fauna around. "Well, not quite like this, but like... natural. Outdoors."

Bardiche glows and turns back into a yellow emblem, resting on the back of Fate's hand. She holds he hands behind her back, smiling at Runealy. "... but I'm doing alright. I'm fine out here. How about you?"
Runealy Waldia 2015-12-10 02:07:59 18049
Talk of shared experiences between Fate and the 'unknown mother' (from Rune's perspective) immediately fascinates the princess, who tries to see this in her mind's eye; a place like this, Fate, plus a vague estimate of what Fate's mother looks like... all just enjoying it. "You did? Sounds like you should do it again soon, that's the sort of thing that's always worth it."

As for how Rune is doing? She begins to walk up closer, smile growing. "I'm fine, and you're part of why. A big part. We've talked about how some things will have to be 'nothing personal', but... this?"

She gestures at the lake, then at Fate, then herself... and even way back in the distance to the castle and city. "This is /something/ personal. I wasn't sure what to think of you at first, but we've only known each other a little while and you've given me some of my life back. I haven't been able to say it outright until now," she has been busy between healing, resting, political fallout, and helping Hinote gain his bearings in his 'new homeworld' after all, "But... thank you so much. I hope you never need this much help, but if you do... I'm going to be there no matter what!"
Fate T. Waldia 2015-12-10 02:23:56 18050
Fate's smile wavers slightly at the mention of having a picnic with her mother again. "Yeah... maybe we should... that would be nice."

She doesn't know what to add after that. Fortunately Runealy goes on to another topic.

"We did save all of this, didn't we? I was more than willing to help, but also we were following your lead. It must have taken a lot to get to this point."

Fate gave her some of her life back? Is that really something she did? She did help, and things would've bene disasterous if they didn't... but it's hard for Fate to believe, when it's put that way.

"I was happy though... to help I mean. I'm glad that we won, and that horrible sky wont spread any further, and evil monsters like those demons we fought wont be able to run free. I'm... sorry about what happened with your mother, but... I'm glad that things turned out alright with your people."
Runealy Waldia 2015-12-10 02:31:32 18051
"You really did. I don't know if people are being too enthusiastic, but we're grateful. You can visit any time you like, and there won't be many favors we'd refuse for you, Fate. Wouldn't be many that /I/ would refuse!" Rune is sharply insistent on this point.

Then... something sinks in. "Wait, how did you know about..." ...Right. One demon had strongly implied that situation, and another had outright confirmed it. "...So am I. I'm sorry, and glad at the same time. That's part of why I'm so impressed with you, Fate. Half the time I see you, it looks like you're out there alone fighting for your mother's sake. I don't know why she's not out there with you, but you're doing amazing things on your own. It's really important that you make it back to see her, and that's why I made that 'nothing personal' deal with you!"

That Fate's mother may have sent Fate on energy draining missions does weigh in Rune's mind, but it's currently being shouted down by evidence to the contrary; Fate herself seems to be truly commendable, and she's assuming Fate's mother has some influence on that.
Fate T. Waldia 2015-12-10 02:50:08 18053
"After seeing how scary even two of those demons are," says Fate, "I can't blame people for not wanting to see a countless swarm of them. I try to seem confident when I fight, but really... if we were just normal people facing against one of those things..."

The thought of it is too scary. She doesn't want to think about it for very long.

Fate looks down and away, glancing off in the direction of the capital, "... though... I never really know how to act in front of them. I mean... the people I work with tell me to lie and steal and take whatever I want... and if anyone falls victim to it then they're just weak or stupid, but... I don't know why, but I don't think I can act that way in front of the kids who think I'm a hero."

Fate hesitates, keeping her hands behind her back. "How do you know what's right and wrong? If it were truly right to do those kinds of things, then it should be right to teach that, but if it's not something you'd want others to do, then doesn't that mean it's something that you shouldn't do, either?"

Fate looks away from the distant city and back to Runealy, saying, "Sorry... maybe that's a dumb question."
Runealy Waldia 2015-12-10 03:02:07 18054
That is a frightening line of thought, and one Rune can only respond with: "'Try', 'act'... sometimes it's probably real confidence. Sometimes it's probably not. Other times? I don't know about you, but I find just actually doing something, anything, can take the edge off it. No time to 'be afraid', I guess. Not being able to do anything, like most people can't..." A few headshakes dismiss the topic just as Fate has done.

Then things turn worrying. Fate confirms several things the princess suspected, all in a row. Things that don't give Rune enough to make conclusions, but they open up possibilities; 'scenarios' running in Runealy's mind that might fit the evidence. How does she 'know right', though? Her head lowers, eyes drooping some; this has obviously hit upon a topic the princess thinks on a lot.

"No, that's about as good a question as I can think of. Asked myself that all the time on Earth. 'Is it okay to do something evil to help someone?' Can you treat 'evil' as a math problem like that? I'm not sure. There might be some really, really specific situation where the answer is 'yes', but... every time I tried it, I didn't see anything good happen from it. I saw people get really hurt, frightened, confused... some of them wound up in a lot of danger because of what I did. A few were so angry they wanted to kill me, and I didn't blame them at all for it."

That's not a good, direct answer. Rune knows it. So she adds something a little more clear: "I know 'wrong' because I've seen it. At the lowest end, it's just mean and makes people feel bad. Mom taught me about that when I tried pushing one of the castle maids around, back when I was... five or six? Made me do the maid's job for a while. I learned to knock it off real fast. On the worst end... I wasn't acting all that much different from the demons you saw, and I know just how much tat really hurts. I wouldn't suggest doing that to anyone if you can ever help it."

She adds a single, sharp nod to Fate. "I'd call it the best question, really. Better than what I was going to ask you."
Fate T. Waldia 2015-12-10 03:11:41 18055
Fate quietly considers Runealy's response. So... Fate isn't the only one who has problems like that. The story about bullying a maid, from a time when she was three years younger than what Fate was now... six seems like such a long time ago when you've only lived to be nine. She tries to remember what being six was like, but it just makes her head hurt.

"Someone told me that I should've lied to you and that other girl... when I was draining energy the other day. They told me that I should've drained that girl and taken the energy anyways. I didn't even think about doing that at the time... and I don't think I could've really done something like that even if someone wanted me to. Maybe I'm just not capable..."

"I don't... really think that's what my mother wants, either. I don't remember her being like that. She was always kind to me... until she stopped smiling."

Fate pauses and looks back up to Runealy, saying, "What was it... that you wanted to ask me?"
Runealy Waldia 2015-12-10 03:34:11 18056
"'Not capable' of that sounds like a good thing, not something to tear in to you for. And think about it for a sec. If you actually did that?" Rune forces herself to face Fate. "Take it from me, it's not a good trade even if you ignore how bad it feels. People will remember that sort of thing, and it can come back to bite you in the end. Happened to me a few times. Should have happened a lot more than it did."

'Stopped smiling'? Rune repeats those words only in her mind's voice, head racing to make sense of that. It makes a few of her 'scenarios' no longer work. Others become more likely. Wholly new ones are introduced.

Ones that she thinks may need to be approached later, but for now this line of thought has jarred Rune enough and she fears pressing Fate further on it here and now might just spook Fate. It's the sort of situation that Runealy fears must be handled very delicately. So she goes along with Fate's redirection, trying to smile again. "I was going to ask you if there's anywhere you wanted to go while you're here... anything you want to see, do, or even buy and take home with you."
Fate T. Waldia 2015-12-10 03:42:26 18057
"My familiar doesn't like doing that kind of thing either... I guess it only makes sense, since I made her out of a part of me," says Fate. "I don't think that lying to you, after making the promises that we've made... would've led to anything good. I guess I feel like if I didn't keep my word, then my word wouldn't mean anything."

Fate considers. Is there somewhere she'd like to go? Is there something she'd like to go do? Generally she's a free spirit, so she likes to wander around on her own, but that's not something that you typically do with someone.

"Well I guess... if there's one thing I'd like to do... I'd like to have some souvenirs to take back home. Some treats, maybe, or something pretty. I'd like to get something for my familiar, and also something for my mother."
Runealy Waldia 2015-12-10 03:48:27 18058
"It would have meant as much as whatever was so important to you that you were willing to trade ideas like 'honor', 'honesty', and 'trust' for them. And some things might be worth that," Rune notes in a slightly upset voice. "I was always taught to worry about 'right' first, then everything else, but other people might not understand. So it's probably just as well you couldn't bring yourself to do it with her... I hope you talk to her some time, and make sure she's okay."

Then Rune allows the matter to drop outright. "Do it." She's more than glad to encourage Fate to go picking up things from local businesses. "We've already left you some money for exactly that sort of thing," and it wasn't exactly a small sum, 'world saving' and 'princess saving' are apparently well-paying jobs, "but if you need a bit more then I'll make it happen. Do you know what you were looking for? And... be sure you get yourself something too, okay?"
Fate T. Waldia 2015-12-10 03:57:53 18059
Something for herself? Fate considers that for a moment. What would she want? She does have Waldian money. She even has a concept of how much she has, from comparing common commodities like 'food' and 'clothing' to their prices in Yen and in Waldian currency. It's a rough estimate of the exchange rate at best, but it's enough to have an idea.

"I don't think I need anything more than what I was given, but I wanted to ask... do you have a favorite store that you like to go to? Maybe a jewelry store? Or a clothing shop? Also, I guess... I'm not really sure what kinds of candy or treats you have in this world. There's a lot of stores... I guess it's hard to pick one."

Fate thinks about getting something for herself... Maybe a dress would be nice?
Runealy Waldia 2015-12-10 04:13:46 18060
"That sounds like a store per category, you know." Rune actually does not mean this as criticism. "Tell you what, I'll show you some of the ones I like! Whether it's clothes or jewelry or candy, we'll figure it out!" She's enthusiastic on this point.

"And if you need some space, I'll ask the guards to get you some. They won't kick anyone out, but... we'll make sure you can breathe at least," she's being figurative there. "Sound good?"
Fate T. Waldia 2015-12-10 04:18:04 18061
Fate nods, smiling, saying, "Alright! I'd like that." At least having someone she knows around will let her feel less like she's 'on-stage' and expected to perform or something. Besides, it sounds like fun!

"... and yeah, I mean, I don't want to kick people out or anything, or seem like I'm being mean, but... I guess I wouldn't mind a bit more space."
Runealy Waldia 2015-12-10 04:21:16 18062
"Then it's decided! I heard you flew out here, but... you'll probably beat me back there. I'll have to just jump and jump," Rune concedes, realizing that transforming for the sake of faster travel is going to be a tad weird. Still, if it gets them back by a sane hour, so be it.

"And when we get there, I'll show you everything you'd like! By the time you go back to Earth, you'll have plenty for yourself and to share with them!" Bright-eyed and energetic, Runealy is ready to head back whenever Fate might be.
