Tadase had, of course, heard about the upcoming dance to mark the New Year. And he'd also been thinking a lot about what Amu and he had discussed the last time, when they met at the shrine. When they had their arms around each other, and the cookies she gave him - which he ate very slowly and probably with a silly smile on his face.

This had eventually after a lot of hemming and debating and frustrated looks from Kiseki resulted in him sending her a message asking if she'd like to meet him for lunch at a little restaurant near Seiyou itself. (Kiseki wouldn't let him ask her to the dance over text, either. He was incredibly adamant about this for someone smaller than soda can.)

After getting their food, Tadase sits down in front of Amu at a little round table - but he doesn't SAY anything, or really do anything other than pass over her food and then look down into his.

It's been a brisk seven degrees in Tokyo all day, which means Amu bundled up in her peacoat and her scarf for this outing. Nevertheless, she was quite happy to be out with Tadase. So excited, in fact, that she even let him order her food for her, curious what he might buy.

When the food arrives, she offers him a warm smile and digs in to eat, but like Tadase, she manages not to say .. anything. As the awkward silence wears on, however, Amu casts more and more looks Tadase's way, until eventually she stops eating altogether.

With her food half-eaten, and her drink half-gone, Amu tries to not stare at him any further, because she's relatively convinced she's done something wrong, and he's already going to break up with her. What could she have done so wrong?!

There is, eventually, a tiny king kicking at Tadase's shins and reminding him that he's got a reason for being here. He could just force a chara-change and do it, but Kiseki for all his faults wants the best for Tadase, and sometimes that means letting him make his own slow progress.

"Amu-chan..." Tadase FINALLY begins, "...I know we haven't had much time to ourselves since we the park." The aquarium 'date' with Amu's little sister was assuredly not 'time to themselves' after all.

"But..." And then there's a huge, deep breath, Tadase sits back in the chair, straight up, like he's about to bark an order. "There's a dance. A New Year's dance. And I'd like you to go. With me. To the dance."

It's only a little bit stilted and harsh, but it's the only way he could force himself to get the necessary information out. Leading comes more naturally than asking a girl to a dance, for Tadase.

In Amu's mind, there was a long list of possibilites that might have explained Tadase's reason for asking her to lunch, and then being silent. On that list of possibilities, nowhere did 'inviting me to a dance' appear.

"W...what?" Amu asks, utterly dumbfounded by the request. This is when Miki kicks her in the shin, and Amu blurts out, "I'd love to go!"

With the ice broken, her smile is genuine as she says, "Really, that sounds wonderful." Pause. "Um, how much are the tickets? I've got my Christmas money still. If it's enough, I will definitely go."

It really doesn't take much time between him asking and Amu agreeing - but to Tadase, it feels like an eternity. An uncomfortable eternity of excruciating time, each second stretched out into it's own little infinity.

But then she agrees, and Tadase looks like someone's just injected happiness directly into him - he leans forward and his eyes are even brighter than normal. "No, no. I've uh... already got the tickets." he admits. He wasn't sure what he'd do if she said no, but that isn't an issue now anyways. Hopefully she doesn't think that's too much.

Then he takes on a bit of himself, an odd bit of confidence that he can't normally dig into. "But I wouldn't want to go with anyone else other than you, Amu-chan. So... I'm very glad you said yes."

He already bought the tickets. Amu stares at Tadase for a long, confused moment, then shakes her head a little and goes back to eating. She finishes another half of what's left (that's a total of three-quarters, for those of you counting at home), and then frowns a little.

"Who would you have asked if I'd said no?" Amu asks confusedly. This earns her another kick to the shins, and she jumps a little. "Sorry, no, don't answer that. I don't want to know. Do you know how formal this thing is? When is it? Should I meet you there or ... will you come pick me up or ..."

Tadsase looks down and answers anyways. "I don't know." Then he pauses, and once again, finds that honest part of himself. "I didn't know how long it'd take me to be able to ask you, and I didn't want to give myself an easy out by letting the tickets sell out. Once I bought them, I knew I'd have to ask eventually." he says with a half-smile. And yes, even though Amu told him not to answer. He felt a bit silly about the whole thing, and the honesty here is somewhat cleansing.

"It's... from what I understand, going to be decently fancy. Like, it's a New Year's party, but it's also a formal dance. I'm going to pick you up, if I can, but if that'll be complicated you can meet me there, or..." and it's like that confidence just goes away suddenly. "...or whatever works best for you."

Well, it was there while it lasted!

It's the honesty of the answer that gets her. Amu smiles at Tadase, then reaches across the table to gently grab his hand and give it a squeeze. "That's really sweet," she tells him of his ticket buying explanation. If she were older, and a little more jaded, she might be skeptical. But at eleven, she buys it hook-line-and-sinker.

"You can pick me up," Amu says with a giggle. "Just um, don't tell my dad. I'm going to tell him I'm going out with Nadeshiko, okay?" she suggests. "I'm sure my mom will be okay with it. But Dad would flip, and then we'd lose the toilet for the rest of the year." What?

"What time will you pick me up?"
Tadase Hotori 2015-12-31 10:30:06 20104
He feels even better about it when Amu grasps his hand and smiles at him, and he breathes a huge sigh of relief.

"Right. I'll pick you up and we'll walk there. It's actually not too far from your house, I think." he says, smiling. "Well, the dance starts at six, so I'll be there at five, to make sure we get there on time and all. Better to be early, anyways." Apparently, Tadase does not believe in fashionably late.

Amu's quick question about timing seems to have dodged any confusion about the bathroom comment.

"Make it five-thirty," Amu suggests with a grin. "I'm going to need time to get ready, and dad will be really upset if I miss dinner." She shrugs at him, then smiles a little more. She's seriously getting a real honest-to-goodness Date with Tadase-kun!?

How has this become her life!?

Amu kicks her feet together once, then blushe a little and looks away. "So ... I think I did something you'd be proud of, last night."
