Nrrrrggggg... Infinity. Reiko's bane. It was a school she really wanted to go to. In fact, she already technically had an 'in'. The only thing stopping her, was Mei. She wasn't leaving Mei behind. Never. Ever. NEVEREVER. However, this didn't stop her from accepting the occasional assignment from her teacher to deliver a packet to another teacher.
And so here Reiko was, holding a big manilla envelope with a bit of weight to it, walking onto the schools ground and looking up and amazed at the entire campus- as always.
As she does this, some sort of magical koi appears hovering over her shoulder also, looking amazed with a fin to it's mouth. No one seems to particularly notice. Magical types might. But everyone else seems to ignore it.
She began to walk to the map near the big central quad area and begins looking at it. Hrmmm... Room... 255. Where was that?
The clubs are just finishing up around Infinity so the campus is busier than might have been expected, with plenty of people around not noticing the astonished koi.
Among them is a medium sized group of elementary school aged girls wearing orange one piece cheerleading uniforms, walking back towards the tall elementary and middle school building. One of them, however, stops walking and blinks a little bit when something catches her eye. With a quick word to the others that she'll see them tomorrow she walks closer, recognizing the flying fish as a koi once she gets closer.
Putting on a smile Nagisa sneaks up behind Reiko, rustling her pompoms a foot or two behind her head to get her attention. "R - E - I - K - O, ohayoooo Reiko!" she cheers, beaming brightly to her afterwards.
Reiko Touyama places a finger against the map.... "I'm here...." she then traces a finger to one of the buildings annnnnnnd!?
She gets her own cheer!? She blinks and turns around. When she does, the koi pops of existence in a heart shaped sparkle. She just catches the tail end of this sparkle as she blushes a bit at Nagisa... the cheer catches her off guard. Then recognition kicks in.
"Oh! Nagisa-chan!~" she says with a smile. "Hi!... how are you doing?... are you... doing better?" she asks a little sheepishly. She wants to ask about the magical stuff. But that isn't important just yet.
The white haired schoolgirl smiles brightly as she's recognized, "A bit! Things can still be hard, but it's getting easier for them to be happy." As evidenced by her currently cheerful demeanor, though the fact she's just come out of cheer practice probably has a lot to do with that as well.
Nagisa leans to the side and looks around the older girl for a moment, "Is there someplace you're trying to get to, Reiko-chan? If it's not in the High School building I can probably help you find it."
Reiko Touyama ums. "I'm trying to find... Room 255. And deliver a packet." she says holding the manilla envelope. "I dunno where that is.. I think it's... the elementary grade.." she says sheepishly. "I dunno why my teachers would want me to deliver to a high school room!" she says a bit, touching her chin in thought. Another koi appears, mimicing her movements----then she suddenly lashes out to the right. "GOTCHA!......"
Nope, sparkles.
"Nrrrgggg. I'm really sorry. You...see them? Right? lots of people can't. but it seems like those... like.. me..or you?" she says vaugely. "Can see them really well. I really have no control over it and it's super silly. But that's kinda my fault for drawing all those pictures like that." she says even more sheepishly.
Nagisa smiles, "255, yep, that's an elementary floor if it's in our building." But before she can start leading the way the koi pops into existence to seemingly tease Rei before disappearing into sparkles. It gets a laugh from the younger girl. "I see them; it's how I noticed you. It isn't very often you see koi that can swim around in the air."
She gives Reiko a confused look when she mentions drawing them, clearly not understanding their origins. "Follow me!" she chimes, waving her pompoms in the air and doing a little spinning dance, skipping the first few steps towards the school building. "Do you have to go right back to your school teacher after you make your delivery or can you stay a little while?" she asks, making an assumption on who she's delivering for.
Reiko Touyama hehes. "I was gonna...explore a little. After." she says gently. "Infinity is so cool. It's a really big place." she says as she walks along. She head tilts a little. "It's the end of the day, so I'm more or less homebound after this is done." she says with a matter of fact nod.
She walks along quietly and they get to the room! She opens the door. Drops off the Envelope to an expecting teacher, and she walks out of the room. "See, there, done!" she beams.
"Though...I know it wasn't as dramatic as punching that jerk in the face the other day." she says a little steamed...
"You... remember, right? The other day, with that man? Trying to kidnap the pink haired girl...?" she asks. "That guy... hurt Red. A lot! So.. I blasted him! Zoomm!" she says as she makes a whipping motion with a finger!....
Which causes a koi to fly out, swim down the corridor, then pop in a sparkle. Double blink.
"..now that's just silly." She hrmphs and continues walking along-- back outside into the afternoon. "Um... Nagisa. Can.. can I ask... why you're... um... magical?" she asks sheepishly. "I.. can tell you my story...if it'll make it easier... I'm just. Really curious. I'm meeting lots of people like that! But the story alls seems different for all of us!" she says.
Nagisa smiles happily, this being the kind of answer she wanted to hear. "I'm glad! Maybe I can show you around a little once you're done."
She waits patiently outside the classroom when Reiko delivers her Envelope, smiling back to her as the task is accomplished. She giggles a little as she brings up the other day, but stifles it a little when she catches the tone of her voice. "Yes, I remember. I wouldn't be able to forget something so terrible this quickly."
When Reiko mentions one of her friends, clearly so by the context, Nagisa frowns. "I wasn't going easy on him at all, but I wish I'd have given him an extra wallop for that." She watches the koi shimmer down the hall and for a moment looks wistful in a sad sort of way.
Then comes a question that one might have guessed was coming. Nagisa looks... ambivalent.
She looks at Reiko for a moment while considering, and then nods. "Okay, I'll tell you. But you have to promise not to get angry. Double pinky-swear promise!" she demands, coming off a bit childish if only for how serious she seems about such a silly statement.
Then she simply starts walking and motions for Reiko to follow her. She'll lead her up to the Middle School levels much higher up in the building, and eventually to a room designated as the clubroom for the Cooking Club.
Carefully the girl withdraws a key, unlocking the door and guiding her friend inside, turning the lights on and then locking it behind them.
A second grader has a key to the clubroom?! Looks that way.
She runs off to a refrigerator in the main area and retrieves a tray of fresh baked brownies, getting a couple small saucer plates to eat off of and setting them on a work counter, pulling up two tall stools and inviting the older girl over. "If we're going to talk magic, we definitely need snacks!"
If Reiko has been there they'll taste suspiciously familiar to the ones sold at the Midori-ya Cafe. Not exact, but pretty close.
Reiko Touyama blushes "Right!..." she says. "I won't get mad, Nagisa! I can't be mad at you!" she insists. She follows along to a club room, and walks in, and sits on the stool as she bites her lip. She head tilts. Brownies! She picks it up and takes a big bite. Mmmmm, Brownie. This makes her happy, she smiles! "You.. seem really serious... about this." she says meekly. "I guess... I find it kind of silly at times. But... Red also told me of really dreadful things too. I haven't encountered any of those yet." she admits.
"I guess. I'll go first..." she says. She nods and takes a bite out of her brownie.
"Um... me and.... Red.-- that's not her real name. I'm Prism Keeper Orange... she's Prism Keeper Red!" she says. "Anyways, Red.. and I. Used to ... play a make belive game--- based on a story she wrote. And it was Prism Keepers. About girls who protect colors, and stuff." she says. "And I'm a really good artist, so I drew for the game and her story!" she says.
"Then I dunno what happened after that, except everything is real now and not a story. I dunno how that really works. I mean. I drew new stuff, but that isn't real. Which kinda stinks because I wanted to draw a handsome colorful prince to protect us." she kind of blushes at that last one. "I mean-- the other stuff became real too. Like the /bad/ stuff. Like the shades. Monsters that kind of eat color." she says.
She quietly pauses and eats her brownie.
'At you'. If only it were as simple as Reiko being mad at her, Nagisa thinks.
"I am serious about it, but you'll understand why once I tell you about it." Not having met Prism Keeper Red she can't know what sorts of dreadful things she'd run into. "I think that man from the other day was the most dreadful thing I've run into. It's different when it's a person trying to hurt people instead of a monster. A monster is just a monster, right? They can't help it." Pause. "Just like ducks."
She then settles in and gets a brownie for herself, nibbling on it while she listens to Reiko's story. Playful stories turning into real- that definitely sounds like something out of a fairy tale. Maybe that explains the fairy wings!
"If it really is like Red's story, then that should give you a good idea about what you should be facing. As scary as the bad things that came to life might be maybe you can read your own stories to find out how to beat them?" As for the lack of a prince Nagisa can't help but brightly smile. "Then draw one, Reiko-chan! Maybe there's still time. If your story is just beginning, I bet there's still time to add to it!"
Unsure if Reiko is done with her story she waits for her to respond while nibbling more on her brownie.
Reiko Touyama giggles. "I guess it really isn't that simple... the story.. and my original pictures, kind of got torn up into a birds nest. Like literarly. There's three birds that are supposed to be our guides. Like... you know...magical girls... need mascots!" she admits sheepishly. "Roy, Gigi and Biv. Roy sometimes hangs out with me and Red. the others tend to stay home. In fact, I bet Roy would be so angry I'm even talking to these other girls. He's super protective." she giggles.
She says. "I'm sure we'll figure it out thou." she says with a series of nods. Another brownie bite.
"So.. what about you?..." she asks meekly.
Nagisa doesn't seem to be able to understand why having magical bird mascots would mean the original story would end up torn to shreds. If the birds did it they probably have to be the most unhelpful mascots in history!
Okay, given her circumstance that is blatantly false.
"You could still try, but it'd probably be a long shot," she agrees.
Nagisa takes a breath and lets it out, deciding where to start. She decides not at the beginning. Holding her hand out she shows Reiko her ring, and then in a sparkle of magic it turns into an egg shaped artifact held in place by a gold casing, currently shining brightly white from within. She sets it down on the countertop between Reiko and herself.
"I'm what's called a Puella Magi, and is my Soul Gem; it's what I use to transform. To get a Soul Gem I made a contract with," what was the word Reiko used, "a mascot named Kyubey. The contract is that you can are granted a wish, any wish you want," so far as she knows, "and it's a true Miracle that comes true exactly as you ask for it. But in return you become a magical girl and have to fight scary monsters called Witches."
She takes in a breath and lets it out, "But there's more to it than that. I only have so much magic to use to fight, and if I run out of it I die. Just like that." She rummages around her pocket and pulls out what looks like a little black ball with a needle going through it. "This is called a grief seed, and it's used to restore the magic that's inside my Soul Gem. As far as I know the only way you can get them is by killing a Witch. If you ever find one, I would really appreciate you telling me about it and giving it to me. I haven't seen it happen but they can turn back into Witches, but more importantly, Puella Magi like me will die without them, and some might even kill you just to get it from you."
She lets Reiko have a few moments to think about all this, and then answers what she assumes will be the first question she has. "You remember about not getting angry, right? My wish... You saw me the same day I made it, outside the hospital. My mother was dying. She had been dying for a very long time. She hadn't been able to eat or drink anything good for so long, and all I wanted was to eat something good with her one last time. I just- I wanted one more memory of her being happy. Kyubey came and granted my Wish.
"I was so upset because-" she has to stop. A sudden pang of pain stings her heart thinking about it. "Sorry... I was so upset because my mother had died. And it was only after I had already made my Contract with him that he told me wishes could heal someone sick, or save someone dying."
She can't help crying a little, so she doesn't even try to stop the tears. "It was too late though, I only get one miracle, and I used it on cake."
Reiko Touyama thinks on this for a bit... Witches?.... Grief seeds...? These words hint with recognition on her face. She pulls a small red notebook from her pocket and flips through it. Nothing about Grief seeds. But... Witches. "Oh!... Um... Red! Fought some of those! Um.. the note only says... 'Super Scary'..." she says. She pulls out a pencil and starts sketching a grief seed on the same page as she looks at Nagisa's one. 'Come from Witches! Super Important! Give to Nagsia-chan!' she writes. She blinks.. "Wait...you'll die!?" she says.
She seems super shocked! "That isn't good at all!" she says worriedly.
She then seems confused about the wish. That seems like a super wish! If Grandpa was dying... she'd wish to see koi with him one last time, too...
Then she blinks at the part where she could had a made different wish.
"H--hey!" she says as she leans over and gives Nagsia a tight hug. At the same time, a Koi sort of comes from Nagsia's right and hugs it's tiny fins against it's head. And then another from the left.... then... behind.
It's like a group hug at this point. Then she blinks blinks and koi dissapear in a moment. "Ah--I'm sorry...I guess.. they don't want to see you sad, too." she says meekly. "Wishes like that... come from your heart! I can't be mad at you for this. I just feel upset at this mascot guy. Is he trying to upset people with thier wishes!?" she asks fallbergasted.
The grief seed is left out for a little longer so that Reiko can get a sketch of it once she pulls out her notebook, though the Soul Gem is retrieved and turned back into a ring that goes on Nagisa's finger. "Yes. And it's not just me, but all Puella Magi. It makes fighting very dangerous for us, because even if we win but use all our magic to do it we still die. It also makes fighting things that aren't Witches complicated, because we're putting our lives on the line just by using magic we might need later."
Now comes a sigh, "Worst of all, some Puella Magi will fight other Puella Magi for their grief seeds. If two are fighting the same Witch, it becomes a contest. Don't blame them though; it's a matter of life or death."
She's taken by surprise when Reiko hugs her, eyes widening a little at first before she slowly reaches her arms up to hug Reiko back. Her expression turns goofy when she realizes she's being hugged by a trio of magical koi.
"It's okay, Reiko-chan. I still cry when I think about it, but I'm not going to make myself too sad over it. You and everyone else helped me see that my mother wouldn't have wanted that. And even if I could have made a 'better' wish, I'd still have rather made the one I did than none at all." She gives the older girl a little squeeze, and then breaks the hug.
"Don't be too upset, Reiko-chan. He could have given me better options, yes, but he was responding to a wish that came from my heart, just like you said. He gave me exactly what I asked for. Just... if you hear people talking about magical wishes, try to get them to think it through."
Reiko Touyama huffs a bit. Mostly at the Mascot idea. "Nagisa-chan. I'm so sorry.... but... I don't need Grief seeds to fight... I.. have... um..." she pulls the necklace up out of her shirt, and shows a glowing, thin orange crystal. "This is my Chroma Crystal. It's my job to protect it.. and I can use it to transform, too---I'm also pretty sure it's what's making my elusive koi friends." she says.
"I mean.. since I don't need Grief Seeds, I can help you fight! And that'd put stuff in your favor, right?" she smiles. She pauses a moment...
"Was that pretty black haired girl a Puella Magi, too? I've seen her before. It's kinda hard to ignore her because she uses guns and stuff." she says sheepishly. "Is she a friend of yours?..." she asks. "She seemed to want to keep that girl really safe... I wanna help if I can... I want to.. help everyone." she says tapping her fingers together.
"Does that make me silly?..." she asks.
Nagisa looks at the bright orange crystal when Reiko shows it to her, "It's very pretty, Reiko-chan," she notes in a more cheerful tone than she was using a few moments before, "and you look very pretty too as Prism Keeper Orange! I'm jealous of your wings."
Then the slightly older girl offers to help her fight and at first she perks up, momentarily looking happy and excited, though it vanishes quickly. "It would help me very much if you were there to help fight witches, Reiko-chan," Her voice has gotten a bit quieter, her tone more formal and polite.
"But I don't want you to promise me you will do something like that without thinking about it first. I know you can fight very dangerous things, because it was both of us together that were able to drive way that bad man. When you fight Witches, though, it is always a matter of life or death. They are horrible, terrible monsters and will not think twice about killing you if you show a moment of weakness." Still, even having said that she smiles to the other girl. She doesn't want to dissuade her, she wants her to know exactly what she's getting herself into.
Then the topic changes a little bit. At first she looks confused because she knows so many girls with black hair, but then it snaps into place when guns are mentioned, "You must mean Akemi-senpai. I would like to be her friend, but right now I think she's more of a mentor to me; someone I can look up to. She's very experienced and powerful. You're right though, she seems to care about that girl more than anyone."
As if a spell was suddenly cast her eyes widen, "No no no, Reiko-chan!" She leans over from her stool and hugs the girl tightly, "It doesn't make you silly, it makes you a very good and wonderful person!"
Reiko Touyama blushes at the hug, but she returns it. "If you say so, Nagisa-chan~" she smiles.
"Akemi-Senpai then. I. Mean. Most of the time. I can't really get the names of some of these others who fight. I literarly just know them as, say. That guy in the tophat... or the girls in sailor uniforms..." she says meekly. "I did meet a Werewolf!..." then she pauses. "I mean! A good werewolf! Her name is Cute Wolf Tsukiko!" she beams. "She helped me chase this catboy..." she pauses. "That was harrasing the koi in the pond in Penguin Park.." she pauses.
"...that's not really heroic I guess. But. The koi were saved!" she insists.
The hug is released a moment after Reiko agrees with her assessment, and Nagisa sits back normally again and smiles to her.
"I think they're just being careful so the wrong people can't find out who they are. If you really want to know you should ask them!" She tilts her head a little as Reiko talks about all kinds of different magical people that Nagisa has never met before. "It sounds like there sure are a whole lot of them." Her eyes widen a little at the mention of werewolfs, until it's proclaimed to be a good werewolf at which point the young girl looks relieved. "I'd be really scared if there were bad werewolfs running around! Fighting Witches is hard enough without having to worry about turning into a wolf."
As for the rest of it she looks worried, and then happy when the koi were proclaimed to be safe, "Good for you! I think it is heroic, Reiko-chan, because you were defending things that are important to you!"
Reiko Touyama smiles. "Catboy is kind of a jerk... he.. uh. Has a smaller version of himself. following him around." she says. "I really dunno what's that about." she admits. She doesn't know about Chara Bearers yet. If Reiko had a heart egg. It's most likely a koi. In that. She wants to be one.
Sometimes secondary dreams are weird.
Reiko eats more brownie. Because Brownies are delicious.
She thinks back. "I know that... these things. Like witches. And catboys and weird alien people with wild hair are dangerous." she says. "And it's why.. Red kept my Chroma Crystal from me for so long. Because it's dangerous. And she didn't want me to drag me into something she thought was her fault." she looks down. "But.... when I got my crystal. She looked. So relived. Even during the hectic situation. Like she wasn't alone anymore..." she looks down. "Nobody should need to fight stuff like that alone.." she says confidently with a nod.
Somehow Nagisa had forgotten about the brownies because of all the hugging, but when Reiko starts eating another one she remembers her own, quickly picking it up and taking a little bite out of it, looking soothed and happy.
"Cats do like to tease fish but a person should know better than that," she agrees with a little huff. The comment about a smaller version of himself sounds very familiar to something she's encountered before, but she doesn't want to explain all about Guardian Characters without being sure that's what it actually was. Besides, the person she'd met that had one was very nice!
She listens to Reiko's explanation, sighing a little. This is what she had wanted- people helping her fight Witches, but now that someone is offering she feels bad. Was it right to bring another person into the world of Puella Magi? Even with her warnings she knows she can't really explain everything the other girl for what she might get caught up in; she can barely keep track of it herself.
Despite her worries Reiko's feelings shine through. "You're a good friend, worrying about Red like that, Reiko-chan. If you really want to help, I'd be really happy to have you along! Just don't ever think you have to if you change your mind, okay?" There is a very real benefit to someone helping her, too, "Also, if you help me fight Witches, I'll have a lot more magic I can use to fight any bad things that try to hurt you or your friends. Or the koi!" Especially the koi.
SUPER EXTRA ESPECIALLY The koi. Reiko smiles. "Red was upset at our bird because he gave me the crystal without asking her first. But it was a dangerous situation. And he was right. Red was over her head with that battle. It took two of us to take it down.." she says. "And with me around... Red was able to take a break. I found out that... she'd been doing the Prism Keeper thing for a while. It was causing her to panic... and feel bad... and get hurt a lot." she says. "With no one else to help pick up the slack if she wanted to have a break from the chaos."
She smiles. "I've mainly been trying to keep my flying up to par. I.. um." she says.
"I crash into things. A lot. I broke a window in an office building once. I felt really bad. I even left a I'm sorry note on the floor." she says sheepishly.
Nagisa goes on alert when someone being upset with a bird is mentioned, but settles once the bird turns out to not be a jerk. As mean as cats can be recently it's been birds that have vexed her.
"That sounds awful, Reiko-chan. I'm glad you're there now to be able to give Red a break. From what you've told me she really needed one." She feels like consoling the older girl then as she talks about crashing into buildings, so she pushes the brownie plate a little closer. Treats always make her feel at least a little better! Speaking of, she finishes off the brownie she was nibbling on.
"I'm positive you'll get better if you just keep practicing. Even being able to fly a little bit is better than not flying at all. Maybe if your wings get really strong you could carry me around sometime, even if it was only just a little ways!" She can't help but smile very brightly, thinking about flying around high above the clouds.
Reiko Touyama blushes. "I can pick up people. My wings are magical. They look really tiny, but there's a lotta force in them!" she insists. "You'd just... get airsick with me right now with how unsteady I fly. And you'd be in front of me if I crashed into anything." she blushes. "I wouldn't wanna hurt you just flying you somewhere!" she says.
She bites her lip... a little thinking. At the same time. Another koi appears next to her. Mimicing her expression.
"GOTCHA!" she says like early as she quickly grabs to the right. She nearly falls off of the stool as she fails to catch it again.
"Nrg. I might aswell give up trying to catch them." she says sheepishly.
"But.. um. If you want to practice flying with me sometimes soon. I can try. See if I can carry you around somewhere..." she says.
Nagisa sits up straighter, "You can right now? Then... what if you flew up really high! There's no buildings to run into up there!" She smiles brightly, not considering that maybe Reiko just wouldn't want to have to lug her around so high up.
The koi makes her laugh when it appears, reaching over to help steady her when the stool wobbles. Then she looks serious for a short moment, "I'm not sure why you want to catch them, but maybe you can get them calm down?" She takes another brownie off the plate, and then breaks a piece off and sets some crumbles on the countertop. "Koi-san, koi-san, this is for you! We won't try to grab you if you take it nicely, we promise!" It's a long shot, but she'll try!
At the thought of practicing being carried around she nods happily, "I'd love to! Flying sounds like so much fun."
Reiko Touyama stares at the brownie crumbles. She stares, and stares. and stares. Nothing happens. She huffs. "I dunno if that's going to work." she says with a blush. "I mean. The koi bait." she looks back to Nagisa. "I mean. I can't fly. Right now. I have to transform for that. But..I could try. Just not today. I need to be going home soon." she says.
As she concentrates on Reiko, a koi has appeared by the brownie crumbs. It's sporting bib, and a fork and knife. It begins to eat. Reiko seems obviously to this as she's pondering flying. "I... never really. Flew higher than a sky scraper. Um. There's lots of things high up. Like clouds and.. lots of strong wind. I dunno how I'd handle it." she says meekly. She looks away and-----
"Aha!" and then the koi dissapears. "RNNG!" she says as she makes a frustrated noise. "I didn't even try to grab it that time!"
Nagisa shakes her head, "That's okay, it doesn't have to be now, or even today. I'd just really like to try! Um, sometime." She smiles to the other girl, noticing the koi at the same time Reiko does. She gasps a little and blushes, having expected it to eat like a fish and not with the little fork and knife if it did show up. "It's so cute..!" she whispers.
Then it pops away in more sparkles. "Your koi are really cute, Reiko-chan. Even if they're only around a little bit at a time." She tilts her head a little then, "Maybe you scared it away when you shouted? You have tried to get them every other time. I wonder if you have to earn it's trust first or something."
Then, remembering that her friend just said she needs to leave soon, she picks up the plate of brownies and takes it back to the refrigerator so she doesn't forget. It's okay for her to be here, just so long as she doesn't leave a mess!
Reiko Touyama says, "Nrrrrg. I dunno. I.. they were just. Things. In the pages I drew for Red. They were just a funny little character trait. But now that's it's real.. now it's /my/ funny little character trait..." she mumbles. "They seem to know when NOT to come bother me. They seem to happen most... when I'm a good mood. Or talking about how I feel..." she admits. "I don't know. if. They're actually smart. Or alive. They just seem to copy me. And be silly." she says.
She helps cleans up, making sure not to leave a mess.
"Nagisa-chan~ I.. really need to go now though. Um..." she pulls out that notebook, and writes a number down on a blank page. She rips it out and gives it to Nagisa. "That's.. my phone number. You can call me when you're ready to try the flying thing out, okay?" she says with a wide smile."
Nagisa hums a little and looks over the crumbs, "They can definitely eat, that much is sure. I like them though, they're cute and silly and playful. I think they suit you, Reiko-chan." She smiles to the older girl, happy for the help in cleaning. Then when the number is handed over to her she takes it, being very careful about putting it into a pocket of her uniform, "Okay! You'll definitely be getting a call from me. Oh, um, it might say my dad is calling... I don't have my own phone."
