Just Dark Things

Ami explains to Lacrima what they were able to do for Alexis. There are cookies. There are also what amounts to dark energy cookies.

Who teleports faster, the Darkness or the Light? It doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, but the question may be one of those academic mysteries which keeps Ami Mizuno up at night. Doubly so because she can't just teleport directly to the roof.

Quietly, the bluenette sneaks on socked feet through the house. She's dressed in a pair of overall shorts over a belly-baring babydoll teeshirt with a picture of Twilight Sparkle on the chest. Held in two fingers are her shoes: a pair of brown flats.

Ami makes her way to the roof with only one detour for cookies, slowly climbing the stairs with one in her mouth, two in her hand, and another three in a little baggie for Norie. No sense in being stingy with Mamoru's cookies.
Lacrima 2017-04-23 20:40:58 75039
There's probably lots of factors involved in that question. For Norie though, there's no calculations or computers required. She just steps through the Dusk Zone and to the Roof. She just wills it, and it happens. She always appears at the far right corner, better to keep regular when arriving here in flares of dark energy, esp. right this moment.

She is wearing a T-shirt that Eilam-kun got her not all that long ago. She appreciates it, to some degree. She has another of those brief cases with her, likely containing the same thing as the last one.

She brushes herself off and sighs a bit. "Hello, Mizuno-san." she says softly as she waves. "Is Alexis stable right now?" she asks with a hint of worry, but not too much.

It's always easy to be not-stingy with other peoples cookies. She purses her lips at the baggie a moment as she looks back. "What happened exactly, when the ring went on?" she asks.
Ami Mizuno 2017-04-23 20:46:46 75040
The baggie of cookies is offered to Norie with very clear intentions. These are for you! "He's stable," Ami agrees wit h a nod. "In a little bit he'll be up and walking and back to normal," she explains. A faint quirk of her lips--a smile?--then she explains, "Well, at least the Normal as far as I've ever known him. I haven't removed the dark energy from him, nor severed his connection to the dusk zone."

Ami finds a wall to lean up against, then finishes the first of her three cookies. A brief pause while she chews and swallows, then she pulls the ring out of the chest pouch of her overalls. "It's a focus," she explains to Norie. "I'd guess very similar to Takashi's work, although I haven't fine tuned it, yet. What specifically happened is that it worked too well. It's designed to thin the stream of dark energy down to only the usable amount. It will reduce his appetite, his requirements, and improve his control. Or yours, or perhaps even Agera-san's, although I'd rather he not have it, just yet. It should dramatically reduce the negative emotional impacts of interfacing with Dark Energy, and might even allow some limited positive emotional experiences.

"But," Ami reiterates, "it worked too well. The amount of dark energy was reduced to a trickle, and it wasn't enough to sustain him, even with Mamo-kun's healing. Though it was almost enough," she notes with a quirk of her lips.
Lacrima 2017-04-23 20:59:47 75041
Norie Okana head tilts. "Ah. My bracelet limits my own flow. Before that, I'd gotten to needing to feed nightly. Which wasn't exactly... good. For my mental wellbeing at the time. The bracelet reduces that once every five days or so if I don't overspend or overexert or otherwise give myself a reason to go refill." she says.

She takes the offered bag of cookies and bites into one immediately. Then a pause as she hands over the briefcase. "More of those crystals." she says. "They're just.. energy tied to a crystalline delivery system. Not very complicated. But I designed them in case I ever became without an energy source for a small while." she says.

"Alexis should keep them around while going through anything you're doing. Just in case." she says.

She head tilts. "I have theories about my own experiences recently." she says. "I just need to think more laterally about how I can fix some things." she says.

She nods. "So basically you need to tune it some more." she says. "Or does it need more than that?" she asks.

She shakes her head. "Riven-sama has been teaching me a lot. I found it important to try to learn about myself and I couldn't do that until I started learning other things. But I only know so much. And what I primarily do for Riven-sama is just what one would probably call Observational Research or something like that."
Ami Mizuno 2017-04-23 21:09:34 75042
Ami accepts the case, then opens it up and looks over the gems inside. Her brows arch a little, then she looks to Norie. Snapping the case shut, she sets it beside her. "Thank you, I will keep them on hand in case of an emergency. Things went about as I'd expected with Alexis this time, and he managed to recover on his own. But they could have easily gone worse. I appreciate having a--pardon the crude analogy--magical defibrillator for him."

There's a momentary pause while Ami considers her next words very carefully. Or maybe she's just eating another cookie. When it's gone, she quietly says, "As for the ring ... I am sure I could tune it to work exactly as intended for him. But I'm also not entirely certain it's necessary in his case. Unlike Kunzite's case, Alexis' body is more-or-less in tact. I've learned an awful lot about restoring bodies to Dark Energy beings, but Alexis' case is much simpler. I may be able to cure him entirely of the need for it. And then ... well, who knows what comes after that," she admits quietly.

"But the ring is still useful," Ami continues, "even if not for Alexis. There are others who could benefit from having their mind less influenced by the Dusk Zone's insidiousness."
Lacrima 2017-04-23 21:27:25 75045
Norie Okana head tilts. "I don't think the Dusk Zone 'controls me'." she says. "I don't think it 'controls' you if you already belong to it." she says. "It's other beings that do that." she says. "I don't like to control anyone. I could. But I don't. What would I do with a bunch of brainwashed people anyways? I don't exactly want to take over the world or destroy it or please some horrible god-like trapped darkness." she says.

"But's it's true what I am isn't predisposed to feeling good things." she says. "I'm not sure what can fix that." she says. "I think that's just. A thing about what I am." she says.

"I mean. I can feel those positive feelings. Just they come from darker places now. I'd need to do things I don't want to , to feel them."

"Yeah. Alexis still has his body. That's why I was worried about the change in hair and eye color. That's one of the signs I was looking for of it progressing onto doing what it did to me." she says quietly.
Ami Mizuno 2017-04-23 21:43:24 75047
"It doesn't control you," Ami agrees readily and without hesitation. "I would not use that term for it. What it does do, however, is influence you. It reduces the capacity for empathy and happiness, magnifies feelings of paranoia, doubt, and anger. It's not control; control would be far less insidious and dangerous."

Ami sighs and explains, "I am not promising anything. But maybe," she says, "with this ring, you'll be able to experience happiness, love, or sympathy--rather than vindictiveness, lust, and pity. Maybe not," she says. "But for his sake, I won't stop my research. And if you can benefit from it, too, then I'd be happy to help you as I can. Knowledge was meant to be free, and I intend to make the knowledge I find available to you, and to Takashi, when I've reached the right point in my research. What you do with it will be up to you."
Lacrima 2017-04-23 21:57:26 75052
Norie Okana nods. "Yes. It does influence. But I also make my own choices. I'm doing my best to try to retain what I can. I was also human. I remember what those things were like. Not everything connected to the Dusk Zone has that advantage." she says quietly.

She shakes her head. "I think it's going to take more than that to let me feel those things. I already know that I can talk and mention things that are difficult for me to. It just hurts a lot." she says.

"Not.. emotionally. It actually feels like I was purifying myself. Even though I was not." she says.

"Like the body doesn't like it." she says.

She nods a bit. "What have you learned studying Alexis? Would studying me help any?" she asks with a little more hopeful tone to it. If a little.
Ami Mizuno 2017-04-23 22:01:13 75055
Ami lets the specifics of what the ring can or can't do drop, for now. Neither of them really knows, anyways. Ami hasn't researched Norie specifically (only someone sorta kinda like her in Kunzite). She can't possibly guarantee anything. So she doesn't.

Instead, she follows Norie on to the next logical part of the conversation with a faint nod of her head. "Yes, it would help," she says. "I will need to ask Alexis-san's permission, but unless he objects I would be happy to share my research on him with you. Maybe there's something in it you can use. And if I can study you as well, we might be able to find more information about your condition. I don't want to give you false hope, Norie-san. Providing a new body for Kunzite was not easy, and it was heavily tied in with who and what he is. I don't know if I will be able to replicate that for you, and if you asked me how likely I think it was I'd have to say not very. But I would like to better understand what's happened to you," she says, "and if you have a personal objective for what would make your life better ... if I can help with it, I'd like to."
Lacrima 2017-04-23 22:20:54 75062
Norie Okana shakes her head. "Just being able to feel things more strongly. The better things. I would settle for that if I could. I'm not putting too much faith in 'being human again', Mizuno-san. I've more or less accepting the fact, that, it isn't possible."

"I'll let you study me then. Maybe you can learn something I or Riven-sama can't." she says. "All I know is that I have more in common with a youma or a creature than I do a human." she says.

She shoves another cookie into her mouth. "Right..." she says. "I have. Things you should probably have. Considering." she says. "Remind me to bring them next time. At least my digital copy. I'd like to keep the original copy longer. There's still things I'm figuring out."
Ami Mizuno 2017-04-23 22:41:29 75065
"And I'll check with Alexis about what he's willing for me to share with you," Ami replies with a faint nod of her head. She smiles at Norie, then sticks the last of her own cookies in her mouth and nibbles. When it's down, she continues explaining, "Once Alexis-san's condition is resolved, I'll focus my efforts on finding a way to reduce the trauma of positive emotions for you."
Lacrima 2017-04-23 23:07:31 75066
Norie Okana nods. "Alexis-kun is first." she says. "I did that to him. I accept that." she says quietly.

"He's like... a brother?" she says quietly. "Like that." she says. "Sometimes I wonder if it would had been better to just let him die." she says quietly. "I didn't want to take him to UMBRA to study, because I know Riven-sama would have asked things of him." she says quietly.

"Or tried to cement the power rather than fix it." she says. "And. Like I said. I'm not. That level of study yet. Maybe in a few many years." she says with a hard sigh.

"I'm glad that the recent bout wasn't due to starvation though. He's been finding ways to feed he's at least mostly comfortable with that sustains him. That wouldn't work for me." she says.

She fidgets a bit as she moves to sit onto the ground against the wall.

"It scares me that I can do that you know." she says quietly. "Make someone like me. Like that. What I did to Alexis." she says.

"The only reason I did was because he was going to die. Stupid. Monster." she mutters.
Ami Mizuno 2017-04-23 23:09:12 75067
Ami considers that for a few moments, then smiles at Norie. "Consider it this way," she says, leaning down just a little to be more at the shorter girl's level, "If I can save Alexis, I can save anyone else you do that to. In which case, what you've done is triaged a critical injury until they can reach proper medical care. Don't be afraid to save people, Norie-san. It's a beautiful gift, and I would gladly have you use it again, if it meant we could save lives, together."
Lacrima 2017-04-23 23:30:09 75073
Norie Okana frowns a little as she seems uncomfortable at this thought. "The person who had this power before used that power to empower his subordinates." she says quietly. "'More Vampires'." she says. "More people to boss around. And use." she says.

"I guess when you compare it to that, it makes more sense." she says quietly. "But I think it only works on people with no... gifts? Already. I wouldn't want to test that." she says.

"But I suppose it's better than just letting someone die." she says quietly. "If that's the way you're looking at it." she says.
Ami Mizuno 2017-04-23 23:38:57 75076
Ami nods her head firmly. "It is," she agrees with a smile. "You can save lives, Norie-chan. It's not the best way to do it, but if it's the difference between life and death, and the existence it causes can be made wholesome and healthy again ... then who cares what the best way is. Emergency medicine doesn't deal in best case scenarios; it is limited exclusively to the realm of real scenarios. Be proud of what you've done for Alexis, if you can. You saved his life. And because of that, he's going to grow up and live a full life. And with my help, we can even make it a normal one."
Lacrima 2017-04-24 00:22:27 75087
Norie Okana sighs and shakes her head. "I guess your right. But that's not what I was thinking at the time. All I could think about was how I'd be sad. And upset if I lost him." she says quietly.

"I mean. Many people. When I tell them what I am. They're either horrified or scared or fearful." she says. "Not Alexis. He just kind of. Accepted it." she says.

"As just something I am and that I need to do things to remain what I am and not a monster." she says.

"Just. People. Who don't understand that think I chose this." she says quietly.

"And. I don't know. Just. Makes me think about that a lot." she says. "When I think about that. You may see it was saving someone. A friend of mine will see it as perversion." she says.
Ami Mizuno 2017-04-24 00:24:17 75089
"I don't see it as perversion," Ami points out, "and I know that neither you nor Agera-san chose your conditions. And I know that he would choose it if he could, right now, but that is because of the influence of the darkness itself. At least I think it is; I've seen the side of him that spurns that darkness."

A shake of her head, then she says, "You're not a monster. Neither is he. If anything you're a victim. That you can turn the victimization into a gift is a beautiful thing, Norie-san. You won't ever get judgement from me."
Lacrima 2017-04-24 01:04:33 75098
Norie Okana frowns and head tilts. "Takashi-sama has lived with this all his life. I've only been living with it for a year and some change." she says. "He's never told me the specifics of his condition. I don't think that it was polite to pry." she says. "All I know is he was able to help get myself under control. Even without the device he taught me some ways I could try to calm myself or at least pressure the emotion somewhere else." she says.

She sort of fidgets a bit. "I know Takashi knows how hard it is though. He told me that much." she says.
Ami Mizuno 2017-04-24 02:10:39 75109
Ami considers that information, then nods her head just faintly. None of it's really news to her; she probably knows more of Takashi's true story than anyone alive--except maybe his father.

So instead, she merely nods her head, then lifts the briefcase again. "Try and help him avoid hurting others," Ami asks Norie. "He tends to miss hearing that little voice that says he's being hurtful." She sighs, then says, "And thank you again for these. I'll contact you soon with information."
Lacrima 2017-04-24 02:13:36 75111
Norie Okana nods. "When we meet again, I'll try to bring a copy of my youma research." she says. "I have a lot of the creatures I've encountered catalogued and examined. Lots of them tend to be unique. But there's a few regular species too. Mostly... like. I don't know if you'd so much call them 'plants' as much as 'growths'" she says.

She stands back, handing the empty baggy to Ami, as not to let Mamoru's roof get messy.

"You're welcome." she says softly.

"I can't promise that." she says. "But I can try to minimize his damage when he gets upset." she says.

She sighs and walks back to the corner before turning around. "Is... there anything you want me to tell Takashi for you?" she asks.
Ami Mizuno 2017-04-24 02:32:13 75116
Ami's already about to head inside. She's just on the precipice of the staircase when that question comes.

And what a question it is.

She pauses and stares down into the abyss of the stairwell, uncertain what to respond for several long moments. Eventually, she just shakes her head. "Everything important has already been said," she murmurs quietly. "Maybe someday we'll be able to fix things. Until then, I don't want him to be reminded of something he doesn't want to be reminded of." And then she starts down the stairs, hastily trying to put those thoughts behind her.
Lacrima 2017-04-24 02:35:37 75117
Norie Okana merely nods. She isn't going to push it. But it seemed right to ask at least. She sighs and turns back to the corner and walks back through the Dusk Zone back into the imaginable darkness of!...

Her closet in her home. She's just going to curl up here now for a bit.
