Woodworking Projects Large and Small

Gaofele examines the condition of the incomplete pergola, and Rune delivers news and a task to him.

Before the Waldians had found themselves stuck on the far side of the portal nearly two years ago, Gaofele had started work on a pergola in the yard of their Tokyo home. The basic framework had been assembled and the flooring had been set, and young plants had been planted at the corner posts, to be carefully coaxed into covering the structure after winter had come and gone.

Two years later, and now Gao find himself sizing up the situation. The framework still stands, the flooring is still reasonably level, and the plants...

"Guess I treated them better than I thought when I was tending them," the forester muses out loud to himself. Virtue's gardeners had given the plants minor trims in the time the Waldians had been gone, but otherwise had let the plants grow as they will. As a result, instead of being directed up the posts to form a leafy ceiling, they had grown upward and outward, forming bushes at the corners and making round frames between the posts and ceiling.

Gao sighs and chuckles. "Guess I'll have to rework the plans," he remarks as he investigates the growth patter of the plants.

Rune's voice, a few seconds after Gaofele's relatively relaxed assessment of the situation, pipes up from the direction of the house itself: "You'd know better than I would. I have barely any idea which of these go where... still, it's in better shape than I would have expected. Or maybe not, when I think about it... you do good work. Good enough that I brought some of it with me."

She paces over to join him by the pergola-in-progress, tone soft and mouth showing a modest smile.

Gaofele Doiru chuckles again. "At this point it looks like it'll be more of a hedge-room than an open-air structure, but overall it still looks good," he remarks as he tucks a few branches and vines back.

Glancing over at Rune, he smiles back. "I recognize that expression -- something went very well?" he inquires. He knows that Rune had headed to Waldia earlier -- the usual limo, after all -- but the details and full reasons hadn't been shared yet.

"So long as you're happy with the result. You've put in a lot of work on this, you know. And... yes! Something went well, but there's also something missing." Rune reaches around in her belongings and pulls out a small white cloth bag. "I still have the doll you carved for me when we met, and it got me to thinking. As far as I know, we're going to be having four new arrivals staying here with us."

"The problem is," Rune is still smiling despite saying 'problem', "We only have things in place for three of them. The fourth... well... I was wondering if I could get your help with a small project? I don't think it'll take too terribly long, should be easier than this," she nods at the pergola work.

"Probably more active than contemplating revised designs," Gao agrees, stepping out from the overgrown pergola. "Who are the four, and what do you need my help with?

The mention of the carved doll has him suspecting that it's a woodcarving project, but he figures that Rune's explanation will clear everything up regardless.

"A bed." Rune holds up a hand to stall for a few more moments to speak, expecting that Gaofele might have good reason to protest; a bed is not a 'small project', after all. "There's Fate, Arf, and Bardiche... we knew about those three. The 'problem'," she uses that word in a lighter tone again,

"...Is that the fourth was unexpected. His name is Jin, and I'd like to get a bed prepared for him. I'd just go out and buy one, but they don't offer ones in his size. Ah, here."

She holds the bag out for Gaofele. "Everything in here should lay out what we need to do for him."

Gaofele Doiru takes the bag, then opens it up and looks through the contents. "You mentioned this in the context of your doll," he remarks. "And with the others mentioned... I take it Jin is Fate's doll?" Furniture for a doll generally counts as a small project, true...

"There's a little more to it than that, but... close enough!" Rune has a little laugh as Gaofele catches on to where the idea is going.

The bag's contents are fairly small. There is a folded red cloth within, soft and of a felt-like texture. It's joined by a small white cloth that appears to be sewn around a bit of cotton.

Finally, a bit of folded up paper is also in there. It contains hand-drawn specifications for a bed, but the dimensions are all clearly scaled for a doll; whoever drew this included a few notes that they're guessing on the preicse range of the doll's size, but even at their highest end this is obviously not for a typical person, not even a child.

"I'm hoping we can keep this a secret from Fate until the adoption is finalized, but if she finds out early... that's okay too."

"So your father agreed to it?" Gao grins. "No wonder you're in such a good mood!" He gives the design specifications another look-over, then carefully puts them back in the pouch with the other materials. "I'll have to get the wood and other materials for it, but this is a project I'm definitely looking forward to."
Runealy Waldia 2018-08-23 06:42:23 95581
"He did! I expected it to take a few tries, he's usually very cautious and thorough about anything he decides to do, but... apparently it all worked out just fine!" Rune backs up a step as Gaofele puts the materials back in the bag. "And thank you for doing this, I'm sure she'll love it!"
Gaofele Doiru 2018-08-23 06:51:37 95582
Gaofele Doiru nods. "I'll study the design some more, then write up a list and go shopping," he remarks. "It'll take a while, but it should be worth it in the end."

He then spends a moment or two checking the overgrown pergola for any other branches that need easy adjusting, then heads back into the house.
