School is, for the moment, out on break. Which tends to lend a completely different feel to the days, and for those who are not obligated to pick up part time jobs (or who have dodged parental store responsibilities for the moment), there's always the Crown. Clearly school break is best achieved via greasy food and milkshakes that are oddly reminiscent of American junk food that teens seem to thrive on.
Naru has taken over a booth, the place is quite quiet in the mornings.. it's barely even lunchtime yet, but she's got herself a snack of fries, and a milkshake and her ever present and eternal sketchbook. This time, with a notebook sidekick, and it's into the notebook that she's writing.
Ami arrives shortly after Naru, bag sides straining. Seems she's here to study. And of course, being the early riser she is... Yeah, she's surprised to see Naru.
"Naru, do you mind company?" she asks of her schoolmate, smiling, standing across the table from her. "I'd love to share a booth, but I don't want to interfere if it's unwelcome." The heavy bag is set on the bench of the booth, and she's facing the windows.
Dressed in blue and white today, the bluenette's in a white button down blouse, a pale blue vest, and a darker blue skirt.
"Wooo!"
Being a superhero was awesome, flying was awesome, being off school was awesome. With all that put together Riley was feeling pretty damn good about things right now as she watched the streets of Tokyo streaking past her. Normally of course she might be more worried about being spotted buzzing around like Superman, however, who the heck was even going to believe this? Refuge in audacity.
She circled above the city for a minute, slowing to a hover, simply watching the world go by beneath her before spotting the Crown. The Crown was cool. The Crown had an arcade the likes of which she had never seen, and her wallet was burning a proverbial hole in her pocket.
Riley leaned forwards, accelerating, feeling the wind whip past her face as she approached and searched for a spot to set down that wasn't too crowded. Feeling satisfied with a nearby rooftop with a fire escape she landed as quietly as she could. Though, there was at least one person who spotted her and was just *staring*.
"Yeah I'm a superhero. I do this for a living. Or I'm just a weather balloon. WoOoOoOoOo. Spooky."
With that out of the way, she entered the Crown proper, shifting back from her "super suit" to her normal civilian attire (which in this case consisted of a simple red hoodie with her shades tucked into the collar, faded jeans, and some white sneakers) and walked into the building!
"Of course I'm alright with sharing!" Naru replies, before she's even fully looked up, but there's a smile to accompany her words when she does. "Did I leave you enough room?" She asks, reaching to gather her sketchbook and pencils a little closer. She eyes the bag and her smile turns wry. "You do know that we're on a break from school, right? In theory?" She chuckles warmly, quite keenly aware that her classmate isn't much for 'break from school.'
Just out the window, there's a little flicker of something in the sky that prompts Naru to turn, not /quite/ spotting the superhero flying out there. So close!
Ami is about to reply when she sees what caused Naru to turn. "What...?" she murmurs, leaving her bag behind to step close to the window. "Naru," she says with urgency--but before she can call her friend over, the mahou has shifted, getting lost in the crowd; or maybe entering a nearby building. Hm...
Walking back over to Naru, Ami sits down and smiles, but it's thoughtful. "Never a break if I want to be a doctor," she murmurs by rote, obviously thinking. Namely, "Was that an enemy?" but...
"I should get a milkshake." She shakes her head swiftly. "Want anything else, Naru, while I'm up?" She stands and waits for Naru's reply before getting in line to order a chocolate milkshake and some fries of her own.
Riley took a quick look around while she was walking in, quickly recognising a random classmate and giving a quick "eyyy" with a couple of finger guns for good measure before walking up to the counter and standing in the line. She didn't notice Ami at first, in fact, they'd come and gone by the time she got to her turn in her line.
"Can I get a uuuh, beesechurger.. fleh... Cheeseburger. Sorry. Yeah, cheeseborker and a can of coke?" The cashier chuckled at the American's flubbing of the Japanese language before grabbing her order. It was at that point she recognised someone else! She gave a wave towards Ami. "Hey, I remember you. Last time at the arcade right?"
"I'm good, thanks!" Naru replies as she reaches for her own milkshake, lychee flavour as ever. She gives a little shake of her head at Ami's concern. "If it was a problem, we'll know soon enough." She notes quietly, more quietly than most in the empty arcade food area might hear.
A little more loudly, Naru notes. "Your studying makes me grateful I aspire to be a starving artist. Not starving is a stretch goal.. although I seriously doubt Kyouko would actually let me starve." She sets her milkshake down and then turns to look as someone unfamiliar recognizes Ami.
Smiling at Naru, Ami's about to reply when the American-accented voice makes her turn. "Oh, hello! Yes! Riley, wasn't it? This is my friend, Naru," she introduces the two. "I was going to study today!" Weird girl that she is. "How have you been?" And she sips from her milkshake before nibbling on a french fry.
"Hah, study? Really? Neeeeerd." She grinned, cracking open her ice cold can of zesty American cola beverage. Riley's tone wasn't unkind though, not in the slightest. It was clearly just playful ribbing on the girl's part without any hint of malice to it. "Most people are using the time off to actually, y'know, have time off?" She waved to Naru, a smile still on her face. "Heya, nice to meet you."
"Hi Riley.. pull up some bench, if you'd like.." Naru invites the younger girl to join them. "Nice to meet you." She can't help but laugh. "Hardly the first time Ami's gotten flack for her unending studying, won't be the last either, I expect. Have no fear, the rest of her friends are much better at goofing off than she is."
Ami laughs. "Listen," she says to Riley, before sipping her milkshake. "I want to be a doctor. A good one, too. So I've got to study hard!" And she may be a bit of a workaholic already, but shhh.
"What are you up to today, Riley?" the bluenette inquires, smiling still. Then, there are french fries to eat, and Ami does so, happily listening to the younger girl and Naru.
Riley nods, plonking herself down. "Yeah, I'll take you up on that offer." She said, before taking a bite of her "beesechurger", or whatever her accent mutated the word to be. In fact, the server had doodled one of her little accidental liguistical permutations onto the napkin. "Oh. Funny. Funny guy. Cheeseborker, I get it."
Riley dropped the attitude slightly when Ami mentioned studying to become a doctor though. "Yeah. Good to have those sortsa' goals in mind and go for 'em. No idea what I'm going to do. Also eh, haven't been up to all that much. Helped Sam fix up a car some more earlier today, then thought "what the heck" and decided to swing around here again."
"Are you new to Tokyo?" Naru asks as she closes her notebook and draws her sketchbook closer to her. She picks up one of the pencils on the table, settling to doodling. "Because, forgive me for saying so, but your accent doesn't sound japanese." She smiles easily, not teasing per se, but understatement of the week certainly.
"Ami.. if you could keep an eye out for good, affordable spaces to rent for an evening.. I'm hoping to put together a show this far.. finally. I've only been talking about it for a year." Naru comments as she sketches.
"I don't know who Sam is, but it must be interesting, being able to fix a car. I don't have that ability," Ami says, smilingly, to Riley. Then she nearly whips around to Naru. "You're what?" she says, amazed and proud. "Of course I'll keep an eye open!"
Riley took a bite of her cheeseburger, wiping her mouth with the back of her sleeve. "Yeah, funny how I don't have a Japanese accent considering I'm not Japanese. Nah, relatively new I guess. Came here uh, must be a year and a half ago? Two years? I don't really keep track. I'm still not quite uh, what's the word, fluent? Yeah. Fluent, let's go with that, yet. Accent's the biggest tell really."
She nodded at Ami's mention of Sam being interesting, trying to hold back a fit of giggles at that comment. "He's my dad. Sort of. He fixes old cars and sells them and I know how to turn a wrench so..." She shrugged. "I often give him a hand. You know, he really should be paying me at this point."
"I don't know the first thing about cars, and the only thing I know about motorcycles is how to say 'hunh, I think that doesn't sound quite right', but certainly not how to fix one. That's an awsome sill, Riley." Naru grins and then laughs heartily about parental non-payment. "If you have better luck than I've ever had at getting a paycheque from one's parent, let me know. It's never panned out for me at my Mother's store. Generally I just get reminded about room and board and life giving and all of that sort of then." She chuckles. "I can't even claim otherwise these days, I use my room at my Mother's as my studio, even if I dont really live there anymore. Still, your japanese is excellent, even with the occaisional accent quirk."
Naru nods to Ami at her surprise. "I've been talking about it for ages, but a conversation with Kazuo really highlighted that I should just get off my butt and get something together. I need to pick pieces that either aren't hugely disturbing, or just lean into a super creepy show, which might work well later in the fall, actually."
Ami grins at Riley. "Your Japanese is excellent, yes! Accent will fade over time, you know. And Naru's right. Being a car mechanic is quite a useful skill." And then she turns to Naru. "I'd wait and do something creepy later in the fall. It'd be interesting, and well-suited to your work." She smiles warmly at the artist across the table from her. "I can't wait. Maybe I'll buy something if it isn't too terribly creepy." She grins at Naru, then.
"Hey I hope not! I like my accent." Riley grinned. "Naw I get you. Still, hasn't shifted a jot while I've been here. I guess the Alabama isn't going anywhere for the time being." She took another bite and a sip of coke before talking up again, this time in response to the question of being paid. "Hey, I'll try and bug him more about it. That engine rebuild was all me on the Mustang we managed to shift a couple months back. Well uh, mostly me. Room and board argument is BS when those things can flip for so much. I think a chunk of it's going for college though."
The talk of a "show" seemed to get her attention though! She leaned in slightly. "Wait, what's this about a show? You making a TV program or somethin'? Youtube?"
"I'm sure I've got a couple less creepy things to pick from.. probably." Naru winks at Ami with a grin. "There's got to be /something/."
Naru nods to Riley and gestures a bit. "Well, if you go to a national school and pass the entrance exams, university isn't nearly as expensive as the horror stories I've heard about America. If you're planning on returning there for school, then perhaps working for college tuition is an excellent trade off." She chuckles and shakes her head. "No, I'm afraid I'm far too boring to youtube. I'm an artist, and I hope to have a show of my drawings and paintings."
Ami grins at Naru again, but then looks woefully at her books as she finishes her fries. Her milkshake is long gone. "I'm afraid I should get going and actually study. But I appreciate seeing you both. See you around--and Naru, text me when you figure out when and where, yeah?" She stands, stretches, and grabs her books and tray to throw away her detritus. "See you both later." And exeunt, stage left.
