When the Phantom Empire attacked Earth, Millie and her family were on vacation in Tokyo. Millie was separated from her family during the chaos, and inadvertently ended up awakening as Cure Shield when she put herself in harms way to save a frightened child and his dog. There had been no colourful mascot around to teach her about Pretty Cure, so she had to go on instinct and try and figure things out. The attack didn't seem to be the only one happening in the city, so common sense told her that there must be someone else who knew what was happening... all she had to do was find them.
