Makaiju

Seijuro and Natsumi Ginga are a pair of recent transfer students to Seishou Public School: a pair from an unnamed foreign country studying abroad in Japan to absorb its culture.

Seijuro and Natsumi Ginga are also An and Ail, humanoids from another world, come to Earth in a desperate gambit for survival. Without the energy of the Makaiju, a massive alien tree, they and their species will die. The pair employ monstrous Cardians to drain the energy of Earth's native population and feed it to the Makaiju, sustaining its life ...

... for a while. No matter how much energy they manage to leech from the humans they trap or entrance, the Makaiju is failing to flourish. And every day that goes by without the tree's restoration drives them that much closer to the brink.
