Burns and Madokas
Date of Scene: 13 October 2015
Location: Mitakihara - Mitakihara General
Synopsis: Hannah is visited in the hospital by Mamoru, and attended to by Madoka!
Cast of Characters: Madoka Kaname, Hannah Sharpe, Mamoru Chiba

Hannah Sharpe has posed:
It's certainly not the first time that Hannah has ended up in Mitakihara General. And surely not the last. But it's as annoying as ever, as she wakes up, in a hospital gown and the pinching feeling of an IV in her arm. Her bronze skin has more than a few bandages on her, one across the eye, though that certainly bothers her less than most.

The prognosis? Third degree burns. According to the news, there was a gas-related explosion in the park, and an early-morning jogger or two got caught up in it. Eclipse excuses are so handy when you blow yourself up with magical energy.

Hannah groans, pain assaulting her despite the drip of painkillers in her arm, and Boris noses the girl. He'd been awake all night, worried as ever for his Master, curled up like the world's largest teddy bear next to her. By now the hospital staff have stopped trying to get the dog away from her. The last time that happened Hannah threatened a lawsuit!

Madoka Kaname has posed:
Though the term 'candy striper' is still used to describe teenaged girls who volunteer in Hospitals and elsewhere as nurse's assistants the word is a bit of anachronism. It refers to the red and white candy stripe outfits some of the first such girls made up for themselves to make themselves easily distinguishable. While the term is still in used from time to time in America where it originated the striped outfits are long gone, replaced with more reasonable ones. In the case of Mitakihara General this means pastel pink scrubs.

Thus that is what Madoka is wearing as she walks down one particular hallway of the almost excessively large hospital. She lets out a bit of a sigh, having just had to help with one of the more stressful duties she can have- help a nurse administer medicine to someone with a fear of needles. As a volunteer this primarily meant doing her best to distract them and take their mind off of what the nurse was doing, but sometimes it didn't really help and it was more about getting shaken about while holding onto someone's arm.

The next patient is someone who had seemingly gotten burned in some kind of accident, and Madoka comes armed with a small plastic pitcher full of ice chips and another with water. many people liked drinking icy cold water, but she also turned a blind eye when that ice got used to cool any burns that weren't major enough to require bandaging- sometimes soothing the little wounds can make the bigger ones easier to bear.

A quick glance at the notice chart outside the door tells her she doesn't need any special protective gear before entering, so she sanitizes her hands and walks inside. "Hello," she calls in her best cheerful voice upon seeing movement in the bed, "My name is Madoka Kaname and I'm here to help you with anything you might need."

Though she doesn't know Hannah well enough to recognize her on sight with those bandages and under covers, Boris is distinctive enough that it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who the high school girl is even before she looks around for her name. "Oh, Hannah-chan!" Her voice is a mix of surprise and worry, and she steps over to the bed quicker than she normally would, "I... brought some cold water and ice chips, if you'd like any."

Her mind races for a few moments. "Do your parents know you're here? Does the school? Is there anyone you'd like me to tell?" Bombarding someone being given IV pain medications with questions is probably not the best plan. Remember your bedside manner, Madoka!

Hannah Sharpe has posed:
Hannah's perhaps a bit more lucid than most, given the situation, having built up a tolerance for drugs. Particularly in the last year or two, given how often she's been beaten down and ended up here. It might be a bit odd, really, if Madoka ever peers into her medical history. 'Accidents' seem to happen to Hannah Sharpe quite often, and without the usual amount of suspicion towards your usual delinquent.

Could this girl simply be unlucky like that?

A hand rises, as the voice finally penetrates her brain. Recognition dawns, mostly thanks to the fluffy woofer right beside her.

"Hey, hey! Calm down, Madoka." She tries to sound nonchalant, but winces, her voice tightening. Burn wounds are horrible, even for someone as tough as she is. Her breathing is harder than usual too, but the girl is stubborn.

Having someone who is okay with first names helps, though.

"...Heh. My parents don't know yet. I don't think. I just woke up. Uhh, school probably does, it's Infinity after all. Besides, not like this is unusual for me." Cue nervous laughter.

A sigh.

"Two people. Ao Karina. And Mamoru Chiba. They'd be annoyed if I didn't tell them, and I can't deal with two people I care for giving me /that/ face right now." She mumbles, frowning, before shifting her right leg.

Her leg isn't severely burned, but there's rashes and general irritation from high heat. Really, Hannah's lucky to have come out this well after such a blast despite how much she's playing it off as minor.

Madoka Kaname has posed:
Madoka sets the ice and water down nearby when they're not asked for, the now very pink girl blushing when the patient asks -her- to calm down. That's never supposed to happen in a hospital! She takes in a few breaths and lets them out, "It's okay, I'm calm now. I apologize if I startled you."

She does go over and look at Hannah's chart as the two speak; if there are any special instructions for her care that's where they'll be. Even so she can't help but notice the long list of previous accidents. Madoka's eyes widen a little when she sees this, but otherwise she doesn't mention it.

She gets a piece of paper and a mechanical pencil ready for the names. "Ao Karina..." she speaks slowly as she writes them down, "and Mamoru-kun..." after writing these down she looks back up to Hannah, "I can message them right away if you like, if you give me Ao-san's phone number." She already has Mamoru's. "Or if you think it would be less shocking for them I could help you send them a message yourself." A short pause, "Ah... if your phone survived the accident, that is."

Seeing the movement she looks again to Hannah's chart, looking a bit closer at these most recent injuries this time. It draws a wince; knowing someone she's become friends with is in that much pain hurts her in a physical way. But that leg isn't so bad...

"Hannah-chan, would you like me to help with your leg? I could put some skin cream on it for you, or something cool if you think it would help?"

Hannah Sharpe has posed:
Hannah laughs, slightly deliriously.

"It's fine, not like I haven't been here before. Deep breaths, kiddo. You need to be calm for your patients, you know?" She teases, before sucking in a breath.

Burn wounds are the /worst/.

She reaches out, feeling for her wallet, and eventually sifts out a small piece of paper. She leaves it on the side table. "That's her number. I really think you two would get along, but, shoving you both together this way? Sorry, Madoka, to ask this kind of thing. I owe you." She smiles brightly for a moment, even if she looks guilty.

Then another chuckle.

"Mamoru-/kun/, huh? That guy, I swear, he acts like some kind of social pariah and yet he seems to know everybody! Met him before, I take it? He's a good man. You could do a lot worst than making friends with him." Like her, for example. She can't help but turn away for a moment. She's done a lot of horrible things recently, and knows well Mamoru would be scowling at her if he knew. Somehow, being in front of Madoka gives her similar remorseful feelings.

She sucks in a breath, though.

"Just tell them Hannah-baka got herself in the hospital again. It's not really a shock at this point, and anything I say will just end up with them scowling at me."

Her face softens a bit, and Boris woofs encouragingly!

"Some ice and cream on my leg would be great. People always say blunt trauma is the worst, but I can deal with that. Burn wounds? I keep myself in shape, having my figure all toasted up is annoying!" She complains, sinking into vanity. She keeps that exercise schedule for more reasons than one!

Madoka Kaname has posed:
Madoka is not the sort of person to think anything of an odd laugh when someone is on pain medications, much less when they're a patient she's caring for.

At the teasing she makes a slightly uncomfortable noise before saying, "I know, I know!" It doesn't actually bother her, but she thinks letting Hannah think her teasing flustered her might take her mind off things. Unfortunately she's a terrible actor, and unlikely to fool someone who has endless practice scrutinizing people's intentions based on their voice alone.

She gets the slip from Hannah and enters Ao's name and number into her phone first, typing out a message while she responds, shaking he rhead, "You don't owe me anything and it isn't a bother to ask. I offered! I'm just glad there's something I can do to help, really." Her voice is soft and earnest as she speaks those last words and the truth of them is unmistakable.

At the chuckle when it's clear she knows Mamoru the girl smiles, "He helped me a whole lot when I first moved back. Mamoru-kun was one of the first people to help me feel comfortable again. He has a very calming presence." There's more to the story than just that, but there are some secrets that are not hers to give.

A moment later Ao will receive a text message from Madoka Kaname, 'I'm sending this message on behalf of Hannah Sharpe to let you know she was in an accident and has been hospitalized for some sever burns. Please do not worry too much however as none of her injuries are remotely life threatening. My name is Madoka Kaname and I work as a volunteer at the hospital.'

A similar but more personalized one is sent to Mamoru and shortly after Madoka is going getting some supplies from a cabinet. Though she remembers which cream is safe for use near and on burns she checks the label just to be sure before moving over to Hannah's side. Some sterile gloves are pulled on and she gently uncovers that annoying itchy leg. Despite rashes and other possible not very pretty markings she's completely calm and makes not the slightest noise or flinch, letting some of the cooling cream onto the leg before delicately working it around and into the skin.

While she's doing this she talks, trying to keep Hannah's mind away from worries. "I wouldn't worry too much about that, Hannah-chan. Your figure is so nice a girl like me could work out a hundred hours a week and it still wouldn't compare," she complains good naturedly.

"Mm, I'd think you'd get almost as many love letters as Hitomi-chan, but I bet that's not true. You're so impressive I bet you scare all the weaker boys off. My mother always tells me that if a boy only has enough courage to confess with a love letter they're probably not worth dating anyway. Even so, I think it would be very nice if I could get just one. Sometimes it makes me a little jealous!" She giggles a little, having intentionally worked the conversation around to be about her in order to keep Hannah from having to think about her own predicament while she assuages those rashes, one of the first things she was taught to do when helping patients.

Mamoru Chiba has posed:
A ruffled black-haired head pokes in the door from the hall, and Mamoru Chiba smiles lopsidedly at the girls inside. He holds up a white paper bag before stepping the rest of the way in, leather-jacketed and carrying his helmet under his other arm. "I brought doughnuts--"

And then his eyebrows go up and his attention centers on Madoka, winking at her just out of Boris' field of vision before adding solemnly, "Though we'll have to split them if she's not allowed."

Hannah Sharpe has posed:
Hannah can't help but smile. "You're really a good kid. Don't ever lose that attitude, okay?"

She's grinning again as there's talk of love letters and boys!

"Once they get a year or two older, with that kind of attitude, you'll be /swimming/ in love letters Madoka~." Yup, Hannah's being /horrible/ by now.

Then her chuckle is lighter. "That sounds exactly like him. I swear, he's the type that will break a thousand hearts if he keeps being that nice to every girl that crosses his path!" Is she sounding jealous? Maybe a little.

Not five seconds after Madoka sends that text is Hannah's phone ringing. She reaches out, flicks it open, and winces.

"H...hey! I'm fine, I'm fine...Sorry Ao-chan! Okay, okay! I'll be more care...ful!?" Click. Wince.

"Heh. Heh heh. Oh man, I'm in trouble." Cue nervous laughter.

She visibly relaxes as that cream is applied, and she slowly leans back into her bed. She might be tough, but she's still young, and the touch more than helps.

Okay, now Hannah is blushing!

"H...hey! That's too much!" Dangit, Madoka!

She looks happy though! Hannah isn't immune to flattery.

"I'll only take strong people to dates!" She agrees, her fist pumping in the air, and then in comes Mamoru.

Boris facepaws.

"H...Hi Mamoru-kun. Did you just say donuts!?" Cue Hannah looking like a hungry puppy. Must be Boris' influence!

Madoka Kaname has posed:
Madoka might protest at being called a kid by someone who can't be more than a few years older than herself, but being told she looked cute 'like a grade-schooler' by her classmates upon returning to Tokyo has forced her to toughen up a bit in that regard. "I don't think I could if I tried, Hannah-chan," she admits.

Somewhere in some past timeline Madoka probably said something similar only to draw a muttered, 'Tell me about it!' from an eavesdropping Homura.

The next comment has her making a half skeptical, half embarrassed, "Ehh?" A quick shake of her twin tailed head, "Don't tease me like that, Hannah-chan, it's not fair to get my hopes up!"

The comment about Mamoru is timely, as Madoka's phone lights up, provoking a giggle. "You're probably right; he's on his way over right now."

Then the call from Ao, and Madoka just smiles sympathetically after it's through. "That's how you know she really cares."

The cream is applied judiciously, but all those heat rashes means that's still a fair amount. She is wearing medical gloves through all this, of course, but her touch is still naturally gentle and delicate- exactly what you'd want for applying ointment on irritated skin.

At the protests Madoka just looks confused. Oops- maybe Hannah was more interested in the ice.

She gets up and removes that pair of gloves, getting the ice chips she brought. She'd prefer a plastic bag or something of that nature for a makeshift icepack, but she doesn't have any. Improvisation time! She snags another glove, a large one this time, and fills it up with ice before tying it off.

About this time Mamoru pokes his head in and Madoka quickly and discreetly tugs the bedsheet over Hannah's exposed leg. With a bright smile she shakes her head to him, "This patient has no dietary restrictions," she announces cheerfully. A moment later she is back by Hannah's side, the ice-chip filled glove wrapped in a paper towel. Soon icy cool 'fingers' are under that bedsheet to help Hannah's irritated leg.

Hopefully this is more soothing than it is slightly creepy feeling.

"It's good to see you again, Mamoru-kun," Madoka then greets. He's visiting for Hannah, not her, so she'll do her best not to distract!

Mamoru Chiba has posed:
"Good thing I brought enough for everyone, then," Mamoru says cheerfully, continuing to breeze past the potential awkwardness of Hannah's declaration the second before he stuck his head in. She reassured him just the other day, in fact! He's not worried he's breaking her heart, even if she's told him he was strong, before. (He maybe should worry.) "It's good to see you too, Mado-chan. I haven't seen you at lunch in a while so I take it that's going better -- but let me know if you're looking for me, because I've started skipping out for takeaway lately."

Moving over to the other side of the room, Mamoru puts his helmet down and then starts unpacking the bag. He's smart: none of the doughnuts are powdered. "You're as prone to accidents as I am, Hannah-chan," he adds mildly. "Hey, also, have you seen Kyou-chan? She hasn't shown up for work and she hasn't been home, and I know you stopped arguing, but one of your friends was being a jerk to her last week, so I was wondering if you heard anything."

Then he comes over, box out of bag and open. Chocolate, jelly, sourdough, eclair, some distinctly un-American flavors... aw there's even a little lunchbox milk carton.

Thankfully Kyouko's face is not on it.

"Let me know if I'm in the way," he tells Madoka.

Hannah Sharpe has posed:
"That's good! We need more smiling faces like yours in Tokyo." She adds. Poor Madoka. She just can't escape it!

She's /smirking/ now.

"But if I get your hopes up, then you need to meet them! Push forward and be your best, Madoka!" She encourages!

Hannah sighs. "She and I get like this pretty often. I'm lucky she's forgiving." Admits Hannah.

Then she's melting into that leg-massage and general ice-ing. She only perks up as Donuts are offered her way! Leeeean! Nom! Scarf scarf scarf! That donut is down in record time.

"Heh heh, I guess I..."

Her face grows serious for a moment. She might be out of it, but she catches implications pretty well.

"Haven't seen her since the last time we sparred." Is that...worry in her voice? She has a bad feeling.

"But you know her! Always going off on her own." She offers. It's pretty thin, that excuse, as Hannah is /definitely/ worried now. And perhaps worst still, she honestly looks like she doesn't have any clues.

Madoka Kaname has posed:
"I'll get one a little bit later," Madoka replies brightly about the doughnuts. It isn't that she doesn't want one, but she -is- here as a volunteer and not just a visitor, as evidenced by the pink scrubs she's wearing. In response to the comment about not seeing her at lunch she offers a small nod, only to make a small face, "You shouldn't do that -too- often, Mamoru-kun. I'll have Papa make extra tomorrow so you can have the satisfaction of a lovingly prepared Bento lunch!" She doesn't seem to be giving him much choice in the matter.

"I'll... try to put my best foot forward, Hannah-chan," she replies to the encouragement in a slightly pacifying tone of voice as the teasing continues. Then about Ao she nods happily and laughs. It reminds a lot like her friendship with Sayaka, really.

    Only with less hospitals.

"Don't worry, Mamoru-kun, you're fine!" she insists. The Talk of 'Kyou-chan' goes right over her head since Madoka doesn't recognize the name, though as Mamoru presses a little and Hannah's demeanor perceptively changes she makes a slightly worried sound. Even if a missing girl is no friend of hers it's still a reason to worry for the sympathetic girl.

The careful icing will continue until Hannah orders her off! Madoka is very diligent in her efforts to aid others when there's something she can do to help.

Mamoru Chiba has posed:
Mamoru nods to Hannah firmly. "It's probably nothing. I'll keep looking and let you know when I turn her up," he says, giving Madoka a quick apologetic look-- and then he actually actively blushes faintly. "You don't have to do that. But your dad's bentos are delicious..."

The older boy pauses as his pocket makes a text sound -- it sounds for all the world like a mario jump -- then takes it out and glances at the display.

Kyou-chan TXT: i'm sorry plz don

He goes white as a sheet. The timestamp is yesterday.

"You know what, I gotta go make some calls real quick. I'll see you both later, okay? Hannah-banana, you get some rest," he tells the American girl, reaching out to lay his hand over hers -- it's brief, that warmth and peace, but the feeling lingers and it should take the pain away and speed the process along a little bit. "Madoka-chan, I'll see you at school tomorrow. Ja ne, girls!"

And no for real, he actually hurries out without even a chocolate doughnut of his own. Boris will have to eat his.

He comes back in a second later, sheepishly, for his helmet. Then he's out.

Hannah Sharpe has posed:
Hannah chuckles. "You'll do good, kiddo!" Fortunately for Madoka, she calls /lots/ of people that.

She's definitely not saying no to a good icing, at least until things get serious. There's a reach, and she pats Madoka's shoulder.

"That's good. Thank you." A warm smile before she focuses.

"I swear, that girl..." She mutters, before nodding herself. And then the young man is tensing, and he's speaking, and telling them he has to head off.

"I'll be fine Mamoru-ku...hey? What's the...rush?"

She leans back at that touch of energy, one eye closed.

"...Heh. Don't worry Madoka. He gets like that sometimes." She offers to the younger girl, even as her eyes close. She drifts off to sleep not moments later.

But there's a concerned look on her face, even as she dreams.

Madoka Kaname has posed:
Madoka smiles happily while giving a small shake of her head along with a soft 'no' sound, "It isn't a bother at all, he'd probably make too much if I told him how much you liked them. I'll see you tomorrow, Mamoru-kun!"

She may not be overtly empathic, but Madoka is empathetic enough that there's no way she could miss the sudden change in Mamoru. She doesn't know what caused it, whatever was in that text. Maybe it has something to do with the friend he was talking about, or maybe it has to do with something magical. Heck, maybe he just got word whatever garage he keeps it in just collapsed on his wicked awesome sports car.

Whatever it is it clearly has him very concerned and thus has Madoka worried as well. She can't do much. If it's about magic she can't even speak about it in front of Hannah. But if there's something Madoka has learned it's that there's a big difference between 'not much' and 'nothing'. As he places his hand on Hannah's she reaches out and, just for a moment after he pulls it away, takes the back of it into her own.

The actual touch is quite cold, what with the ice-pack glove, but it's there. She looks to his eyes in that single moment and squeezes the back of his hand. There's nothing wondrously magical about it, no centering and no peace of the Earth. But within her touch is the care and affection of a friend with a simple reassuring message: Whatever it is, I'm here for you.

As quickly as the contact began it is gone, and soon Hannah is letting her know she's done enough. "You're welcome." Being able to say those words... it means the world to her.

As she cleans up after her care for Hannah she gives Mamoru a small, kind smile to his sheepish one. "I know, Hannah-chan. I'm sure he has good reason for it."

Mamoru Chiba has posed:
For someone like Mamoru, from someone like Madoka -- sometimes that kind of reassurance is exactly enough. His eyes meet hers, and they look the same as they did in that horrible place when he stayed with her, hiding with her in shadows and looking at her from behind a luminous white mask. She gave him that same care and support, that same bolstering solidarity-- and just like it did back then, pure gratitude shines back at Madoka from dark blue eyes, unhidden.

His hand squeezes hers back, and his heart beats a little more steadily, and his steps down the hall are made with conviction and a confidence and hope that weren't there before.
