Ami stepped back out of the portal, still in bluejeans and a tanktop, smelling of bedsweat and looking like a weekend in hell.
She blinked in surprise to see her mother's shoes resting on the rack by the door, then looked up to find her mother looking down at her with an arched eyebrow.
"Mama?" Ami said, worried that her mother had seen her step out of the portal.
"Welcome home," Doctor Mizuno replied, just a little tartly. If she noticed Ami's use of magic, she certainly didn't say anything about it.
Ami looked sheepish and toed her shoes back off on the rack, then stepped forward to give her mom a hug. Doctor Mizuo returned the affection, then immediately wrinkled her nose and leaned away, eyeing her daughter askance.
"You smell awful," she informed Ami. "You need a bath. Ami, I'm worried about you. You've been gone more than not these past few months, and when you're here I feel like you're not really paying any attention to the things I thought were important to you. When's the last time you practiced your chess?"
Ami's expression dimmed uncertainly and she looked away from her mother. "Mama, it's okay," she said quietly. "I know I've been busy lately, but I have friends now and they need my help. I've been doing a lot of um .." well she can't be honest about this, "... you know, tutoring, and helping them with their research assignments."
Doctor Mizuno may not spend much time at home, but she's managed the single mother thing long enough partly by being able to see straight through bullshit. "Tutoring," Doctor Mizuno replied, the word coming out dripping with skepticism.
Ami just looked at her hopefully, praying her mother didn't press the issue.
After a moment, Doctor Mizuno just sighed and shook her head, then gave Ami another hug. "Ami-chan, you're growing up so fast. Too fast," her mother said quietly. "And I'm very glad you've got friends who you care so much about. And I don't know what sort of things you and your friends are into, but I just hope that whatever it is, you are staying safe, and out of trouble. If that boyfriend of yours pressures you into sex, make sure he wears a cond--"
"MOTHER!" Ami broke in, blushing furiously. "He is not my boyfriend! We broke up! And I wouldn't let him do that anyways! Oh my god!"
Doctor Mizuno studied Ami's expression, reading more than the embrassment in Ami's blush. Frustration. Worry. Disappointment. Grief. Betrayal. It's the same look Ami gets every time her father fails to come pick her up for a date, as promised.
"Oh, Ami," says the elder Mizuno quietly, wrapping her arms around her daughter protectively. She sighed once more, kissed Ami's forehead, then ruffled her blue hair. "Go take a bath. It's a school day tomorrow, and you don't want to go to school smelling like you've spent the weekend at a party."
Ami wiped a tear on her mother's shoulder, then nodded her head. "Yes, mama," she replied quietly. "Do you have to work tonight?"
"I'm afraid so," Doctor Mizuno replied, and for not the first time in her life she regretted not getting to spend more time with her daughter.
"Okay," Ami replied. "Do your best," she encouraged her mother, then passed beyond her and into the bathroom. "Maybe Tuesday we can go out for pizza?"
"I'd like that," Doctor Mizuno replied to the closing door.
