Late in the afternoon a train pulls into Tokyo Central Station, just one of literally hundreds to pass through the station every day. The doors open, and people begin to flood out in the typical rush of traffic that marks most train stops in Japan.
Among those people walks a redhaired figure, shorter than most but walking with a confident swagger that seems to open a small space around her despite her relatively small size. She reaches up to pull the hood of her hoodie up over her head, hiding that hair and shadowing her face as if afraid of being recognized, though in truth maybe she just wants to avoid potential trouble. There will be plenty of that before long whether she wants it or not.
Of course, such meager measures of identity concealment only go so far, and are totally useless against some. "Welcome back to Tokyo, Kyouko Sakura." The creepily toneless voice comes from a bench on the platform, and a quick glance confirms the white-furred, feline body sitting there and staring with flat pink eyes.
"Kyubey. To what do I owe the pleasure? I thought you had decided I wasn't worth the trouble anymore, for as little as I've seen ya the past few months." The Puella comments, continuing to walk along the platform without pausing, knowing that if Kyubey wants to talk with her he'll follow. Sure enough, the creature hops down from the bench and begins padding along beside her, as if he were a loyal companion instead of.. whatever it is he is.
"On the contrary, Kyouko Sakura. How much trouble you are is exactly why you can't be ignored."
A sharp glance is given downwards, a frown tugging at Kyouko's lips. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Tell me, what did you find on your trip, Kyouko Sakura? Are things any better in the other towns you visited?"
Kyouko is silent for a moment as she walks, not answering. Finally, she responds with, "If I didn't know better, I'd think that was a threat, Kyubey. What do you know about it?"
"Quite a lot, Kyouko Sakura." The little creature almost seems proud of himself, his prancing steps and raised tail seeming to express pleasure at whatever his words imply. "But nothing I'm willing to share just yet."
"Typical." Kyouko's frown has evolved into a scowl, her steps more forceful, nearly stomping as she heads towards the stairs which lead up to the street from the train platform. "Well look, you little rat, I don't need you. I done plenty well surviving on my own until now, and I can keep doing it whether you want to help me or not."
"Done well? Is that really what you think?" There might be amusement in Kyubey's tone, but obviously that would be her imagination. "I suppose we all have different standards. But in the past you've always been alone, Kyouko Sakura. Can you keep both yourself and Sayaka Miki alive, considering what's happening?"
Kyouko is silent for a long moment, pausing at the bottom of the stairs and staring down at Kyubey. There's an intense light in her red eyes, something which anyone else might find worrying, if not downright frightening. "I'll do what I have to, Kyubey." She says, the words quiet and full of promise.
Then she's turning and taking the stairs two at a time, and Kyubey does not follow her.
