Talk:Norie Okana
When Things Flip Your Script
July 22nd 2016
About a month and a half back, Norie's plan looked something like this.
A scene was gonna be setup where she drained Eilam Hisakawa 'to death.' This would have happened early in Eilam's time on the MUSH so not many would know about his current situation where he can't really die and come back the next day due to his own curse. This would have happened in front of people who have beef with Norie or were friends-- Kukai, Ayana, etc. This was going to be a 'breaking point' for Norie where she kind of snaps and the last vestiges of humanity go away and goes full on hardcore monster. Eilam would of course be okay which would probably only further her madness when she finds out- probably lashing out further to kill the 'ghost' haunting her.
annnnnnnnd then she met Jiaying Maki.
Jiaying made a bunch of honest attempts to try to help Norie's situation. This calmed down Norie considerably from the manic state she'd been in since she drained Sachiko into a coma. Following this, Eilam and Norie met in her private church spot. Instead of being drained to death, Eilam is sort of now like a mentor in the guide of 'living forever' for Norie and a source of advice.
Then Natsumi Matsumoto confesses to Norie- something talked about in the past- and that makes her more vulnerable to some more positive feelings. Not quite enough for her to feel them- but it's the closest she's come to actually feeling them since she became this vampire thing.
Enough had happened that, when the chance for another plot point to appear happened- instead of doing another thing I intended-- having Norie brainwash/hypnotize her brother-- she couldn't bring herself to do it primarily due to Jiaying's influence. So instead of trusting herself to not do it- she ran away from home.
annnd that's the story of why Norie isn't a horrible inhuman monster fully yet.
I bring this story up because I wanna talk about the terms of 'nonredeemable' vs. 'unsaveable'
Is Norie Nonredeemable? Well the only major thing (As opposed to minor things like common energy drain, saving Riventon from Jupiter's wrath, etc.) she's done to anyone horrible is drain Sachiko into a coma. A coma isn't death and you can be brought out of it eventually. That is to say, it isn't irreversible. If she were to say, magically become human again tomorrow she'd probably feel incredibly guilt over everything she did and try to make it better, visit Sachiko in the hospital every day, throw herself on Kukai's mercy, etc, etc. Her fate's still up in the air in terms of which path she may go down. It's /very likely/ she'll go down a much darker path eventually. But so far that hasn't happened yet despite my best attempts.
Is Norie unsaveable? More or less yes. She's always going to be some sort of horrible dark energy vampire being. This isn't something that's easily fixed. 'Saving' her at this point is 'ensuring she remains a person rather than a monster' rather than 'find a way to make her human again'. Unless something comes up that can turn 'horrible dark energy being' into a 'human' easily that'd work on her. (The way it was done to Kunzite specifically won't work on Norie for thematic reasons and the circumstances are different.).
The shorter answer is that I just let plot run it's course when I'm able to and work in beats that others besides me would like to touch with me. (Like Jiaying's involvement.). Unless it would lead to a less interesting story. (For example, Sachiko wishing Norie back to a human, while doable, would had ended her story there only a month into the character more or less. Not interesting for both parties. Interesting for Sachiko. A return to the boring for Norie.)
