+ | A little after the Warring Ages began on Belka and the Book of Darkness started leaving its mark upon the universe, a small-time conspiracy with big dreams called Doppelkreuz (Double Cross -- they meant the name literally) formed on Belka. It is ... controversial among historians whether they were good guys or bad guys, with the general consensus being that they ''wanted'' to be good but had fairly authoritarian views on how to accomplish things, but their goal was straightforward to describe: they wanted to overthrow the Saint Kings, take over Belka, and bring "order" to the world. Simple, really.
+ | |||
+ | They intended to create an entire legion of Griffritter knights, living magical programs based on the Wolkenritter but loyal solely to Doppelkreuz and its ideals, who would continue to fight even if the conspiracy itself was destroyed. The first was intended to be the prototype, from which the rest would be derived. In addition to the usual things like enhanced strength and speed, Griffritter Nachtglocke I was made to seem strange and otherworldly by way of demonic markings (glowing magical tatoos) and slitted glowing catlike eyes (cybernetics affixed to her irises), and her Armed Device, Rubindorn, had somewhat nonstandard additions to make it seem weirder (which amounted to a kind of "Not Invented Here" in some places, and an AI that wasn't exactly humanlike the way Nachtglocke was but which ''talked'' in a humanlike manner and thus sometimes fell into the uncanny valley).
+ | |||
+ | Her mind, however, was completely human. It never occurred to anyone in Doppelkreuz to worry or even wonder about the psychological effects on an artificial soldier who was created specifically to look monstrous.
+ | |||
+ | Unfortunately, in the end, Doppelkreuz's scientists bit off more than they could chew. They intended to create two dozen Griffritter units in half a year, but it took them two years just to make the first one. Worse, she was only slightly stronger than the average Belkan Knight (or magical girl) ... but Doppelkreuz never actually found this out, because by that time, the Saint King's forces had caught wind of their activities, and they didn't give the conspiracy time to activate or even test the unit. In the ensuing battle, one of Doppelkreuz's other experiments exploded, and part of the laboratory was blasted into the Dusk Zone. Doppelkreuz was defeated and its surviving members were imprisoned or executed.
+ | |||
+ | Ritterglocke and Rubindorn's standby form lay together in the Dusk Zone, connected by a small chain, for a the better part of a thousand years. The good news was, they remained ''functional''. The bad news was, they spent the entire time exposed to dark energy, which slowly corrupted their systems in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. The most obvious change was that their color schemes shifted towards black and red and gray. The second-most obvious change was that Nachtglocke would consider much ... darker ways of fulfilling her purpose than Doppelkreuz ever intended. For that matter, her systems began to view dark energy as being just as vital to her systems as her regular mana, if not moreso. That said, it gave her a boost in power, enough that she could hold her own against ... maybe three or four magical girls at once. For a little while. Possibly.
+ | |||
+ | Finally, Ritterglocke and Rubindorn were recovered by Eclipse and taken to Earth. Riventon wasn't available, so the two were turned over to one of Eclipse's other scientists, Dr. Yuki Murano, a professor at Infinity University who was well versed in Belkan Devices; she was quite surprised to have an entire Belkan Knight suddenly materialize in her laboratory. This caught the attention of Professor Tomoe, who wanted to know whether whether there were any more of her (no), whether Eclipse could create any other Griffritter units (no), and whether Nachtglocke could be controlled (yes, in the sense that she obeyed voluntarily).
+ | |||
+ | During a conversation with Dr. Murano and Professor Tomoe (the latter videoconferencing remotely from another building for safety), Bell herself was the one who realized that her programmed-in purpose technically said "bring order to the world", not "bring order to Belka", and with the Saint Kings long dead, she was completely free to fulfill her purpose on Earth. After learning enough Japanese in the space of two months to disguise herself as a human schoolgirl, she pledged her loyalty to Eclipse. She wasn't granted any power within the organization, but that suited her just fine; she was quite happy to be a weapon, rather than an officer. Professor Tomoe then assigned Dr. Murano as Nightbell's handler. |

Profile
A living magical program in the form of an Ancient Belkan Knight, created by a short-lived conspiracy for the purpose of bringing order to the world. The Storage Device containing Griffritter Nachtglocke I lay in the depths of the Dusk Zone for a thousand years, getting a nice healthy overdose of dark energy, before it was recovered by Eclipse. When she was activated, she decided that her purpose technically didn't specify which world her purpose referred to, so she started adapting to life on Earth, translated her name as "Nightbell", adopted the civilian pseudonym Akari Hayabusa, and with her Armed Device Rubindorn, she set to work bringing order to the world under the auspices of Eclipse -- whether Earth wants it or not!
(Bell's handler at Eclipse, Dr. Yuki Murano, really wishes she was back in her lab examining ancient Belkan artifacts. On the other hand, this is technically still exactly what she's doing.)
