Profile
A transfer student from a small town near Kyoto, Miho found herself slightly out of her depth in metropolitan Tokyo -- and that was even before getting into her deathly shyness! With no friends, no guidance, and no general frame of reference, she spent the first entire week floundering around. Little does she know that the women in her family carry a Death Curse, held in check by a Life Blessing, and both of them are held in balance by the other -- both just waiting for a push in the right direction, for one of them to overtake the other...

Background
Miho was born and raised in Nishimura, a small village an hour away from Kyoto in the opposite direction from Tokyo. It was peaceful and quiet, and the school didn't even have a whole lot of students in each class. Towards the beginning of middle school, Miho figured out that she was a trans girl. ("Miho" is one of the feminine names her mother had considered before she was born, after an ancestor of her mother's named Miho Oujino.) Of course, once she made the discovery, she felt as though that it had always been the case, that the knowledge that she was a girl had always been just beneath the surface, waiting for her to find it.
Her parents were very loving and supportive, almost to the point of overwhelming her, but it was essentially one big complication in her life. If nothing else, it severely exacerbated her troubles with maintaining friendships, and as her third year of middle school wore on, she eventually ran out of friends altogether.
... And then, due to work, Miho's father was transferred to Tokyo, leaving her completely uprooted.
But that's just on the mundane side of things.
The Shadow Jade
When Miho Kagami's ancestor Miho Oujino was ten years old, she was kidnapped by the forces of Darkness, who wanted to use her as a sacrifice in order to activate a powerful, semi-intelligent artifact called the Shadow Jade. The Curse Hunters rescued her, but when they attempted to destroy the Shadow Jade, it shattered, sending beams of curse-energy and shards of black jade flying. One beam hit Miho Oujino, inflicting her with a Death Curse. It was a simple curse: as soon as she turned twenty, she would become consumed by darkness and die, and that was if she was lucky to wake up at all. The Curse Hunters were unable to remove it altogether, and instead implanted a Life Blessing, the specialty of a solo operator called Life Mahou Wonder, in order to cancel it out.
Miho Oujino was unconscious the whole time, and never learned the full truth of what happened that night. She turned twenty, and both the Death Curse and the Life Blessing faded as her heart became closed to the fantastic. Unknowingly, however, she passed both the curse and the blessing on, from mother to daughters, and eventually to Miho Kagami.
What's more, the cancelling-out was not perfect. There was still a chance that the Death Curse would predominate over the Life Blessing; the Life Blessing would prevent its host from dying, but the Death Curse would probably corrupt her into some sort of evil being. On the other hand, there was also a chance that the Life Blessing would predominate, granting Miho powers with which to fight the darkness -- although the Death Curse's presence would still leave her somewhat corruptable. On the bright side (so to speak), the Life Blessing was intended solely and specifically to deal with the Death Curse, which means that if the Death Curse were to be drained completely, the Life Blessing would probably spiral out of control into some sort of fountain of chaotic energy, killing the host and probably causing lots of property damage.
In the meantime ... Miho just has a habit of unconsciously folding her arms and grasping her left arm with her right when she's stressed or unhappy, little knowing the significance of this.
Direct access to the Death Curse would help any villains who knew about the Shadow Jade in searching for the shards, which really want to get put back together. There were only a couple dozen shards or so, but they flew all over, meaning there's a reasonable chance a particular villain might know about it. The Curse Hunters didn't exactly keep it completely hidden, either, so someone searching for the shards might even know enough to tell Miho Kagami about her namesake. (In which case, she won't actually be able to keep her identity secret from her enemies ...) A Curse Hunter mascot, of course, would have an even better reason to know all the details.
